@DavidArchie’s “Wait” music video deconstructed

Click pic 4 David's holiday message to all of us. *sniff*

After drowning my sorrows in vats of this, I had a hazelnut-inspired epiphany and the true meaning of David Archuleta’s “Wait” video became clear. Fasten your seatbelts for some deep thoughts … (not really):

Scene 1: David standing where Hong Kong streetcars converge
= David is desperate to someday perform in Toronto, where streetcars converge daily … then pull away as I’m running to catch one. Discuss.

Scene 2: Businesswoman drops cup, upset
= Sony Music Asia executive on hearing the news of David leaving the industry for two years. “NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! …. Wait, wait, wait, don’t GO! DON’T GOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Scene 3: Girl dressed in white
= Kid waiting outside David’s tour bus, distracted by hearing ZG in her head and jumping and twirling to the music… narrowly missed by oncoming traffic.

Scene 4: Shattering glass
= his career.  *snap*

Scene 5: David shaking his head from side to side
= Him thinking, “Get a grip people, I’ll be back soon…ish.”

Scene 6: Running businessman
= Movie exec with offer for pale, emo David to star in a Twilight sequel.

Scene 7: Dude in white body-checking The Archuleta.
= Studio intern rushing the script to David… pages go flying because he thinks he’s looking for David Arquette.

Scene 8: David REALLY shaking his head… with FEELING!
= “No, I am not giving this ultra-soft cashmere scarf back… I can wear it over my white shirt & tie!!!!”

Final scene: Shattered glass reassembles*
= I wish.

So, what do you guys think??? … No rush. 🙂

*Seriously though … I know things are gonna get bettah, I knoooow, things are gonna be fine. 🙂

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Joyeuses Fêtes to all!

At this wonderful holiday time, I’d like to say a big thank you to David Archuleta of course, for inspiring this blog, and to all who visit, take time to comment, or just “hover” 🙂 . We plan to stick around here at SAz and go with the flow… wherever that goes….

Hope each and every one of you enjoys a warm, wonderful holiday season with friends, family, neighbours, pets, whomever you hold dear.

P.S. Michèle Brosseau-Tacchia, the founder/conductor of Symphonie Jeunesse was kind enough to answer a follow-up question I had for her about her thoughts on David as a musician:

“I think that David is phenomenally talented and extremely gifted.  He is able to connect with his audiences so personally.  His tone is always warm as is his personality.  I love the way he is able to ornament a line or a phrase so spontaneously in rehearsal warm up, or to  improvise a subtle change in a line during a performance.  He is truly a remarkable young musician!  I look forward to a time when he works with his band mates again sometime in the future~~they are all fabulous musicians!”

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Waiting on the world to change

[disclaimer: I apologize for the emotional rollercoaster that is this post :)]

Mark Nilan Jr. filmed this encore last night of WOTWTC (w/Jeff LeBlanc) at David Archuleta’s final concert of the amazingly awesome My Kind of Christmas Tour.

I can’t watch it yet. The full circle of it all is killing me right now. I hope, as JR4DA put it so eloquently in the YouTube comments:

“Rather than a circle, am imagining a spiral. David comes back to where he started but steps up for the next phase. To remind us that he is nothing but deliberate and nothing but going forward.”

… and from @KimmieDavid (who was at the VIP):

“To all David fans: He does plan on not only returning to music when mission is over but touring and concerts as well! Per David himself. 🙂 … David himself told someone at the vip that he plans on picking up where he left off…says he doesn’t know why ppl think he is leaving the business. just hope things do not change within 2 yrs. But as of now, its looking up”

And Toronto’s @CADTHU (also at VIP):

“For all who asked, I DID it! I managed to tell D how much his Canadian and all fans love him, how we will be there when he returns and … I did it without crying! However as soon as I was done I broke down a bit:). Fortunately I could watch D, he was happy, I composed myself.”

… and from the amazing @muldur:

“Time to share what happened at my VIP lol. I did fine for 2.5 seconds until the pic was done. Then I tried to say that I wanted him to know on behalf of all the fans who could not be there how much he was loved and how very very proud they were of him. I actually said the words … But I was crying big time and my voice was just a squeak he said aww thanks!

“I had given him a hug when I first walked up to him but i was Really weeping like an idiot and he said aw you’re making me get all emotional and I said I was sorry for crying like an idiot and he said It was all right. That he had been pretty emotional since the announcement. And he gave me the best hug probably hoping i would stop Blubbering lol. Anyway he was very sweet and for those of you who asked I told him he was loved and you were very very proud. :).”

… this I did watch, from ShelleyFOD, filmed at VIP… I feel nothing but peace now… wow, David, you’ve done it again:

P.S. And if that didn’t knock you sideways, this will … the “Wait” teaser:

Interview with Symphonie Jeunesse founder/conductor Michèle Brosseau-Tacchia

Photo: @MirandaTacchia (Michèle's daughter! 🙂 )

When I originally contacted Michèle Brosseau-Tacchia for this interview, I didn’t know David would be announcing his mission last night. It makes her comments all the more poignant. And she was so kind in responding to my fan questions that I wanted to post her answers here in spite of what we learned last night.

SAz: What inspired you to found Symphonie Jeunesse?
MT: My inspiration to found and establish Symphonie Jeunesse came four and a half years ago while mentoring a 15-year old violinist.  The room fell silent and she asked me if I might ever start a youth orchestra for “kids like me” and her question went right to my heart.  I was teaching ten classes of music a day in elementary public school and wondered where I would  find time to add another endeavor like that.  I didn’t even know where to start, but it had been a dream of mine to have a youth orchestra for strings in my community for a long time.  I wrote a proposal for funding and presented it at a board meeting of the San Bernardino Valley Concert Association.  It was overwhelmingly supported and funded.  I was able to open auditions four years ago and we presented our first concert with membership of just twelve string players.

Why did you choose a French name for the orchestra?
My father was born in France and has not been alive for many, many years to hear and see my work.  I did not want to call my group another “youth orchestra”, so as a tribute to him, I have called it Symphonie Jeunesse, (Youth Orchestra for Strings).

How did your participation in David Archuleta’s tour come about?
The collaboration came about in November during a rehearsal for MKOC Tour in LA.  The question about finding a good high school orchestra for the LA leg of the tour was posed to David’s band mates by his father.  David’s bass player, Ben has been a coach for my basses in Symphonie Jeunesse and he suggested David’s dad call me, which he promptly did.  Thank you, Ben for such a great recommendation!

What was he like to work with?
David is marvelous to work with!  He is one of the kindest, most caring young people I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  He was so genuine and lovely with me and my orchestra members and their families.

Did anything surprise you about the experience?
I was very surprised to have been asked to have my orchestra play for the VIP dinner in Anaheim!  The night before at the venue in Ventura, my kids had not had an opportunity to warm up on the stage.  At 7:00 p.m. I started warming them up and as their sound wafted through the Majestic Ventura Theatre, David and his entourage came out of dressing rooms to listen to them.  I think it was then that the decision to invite us to play for 40 minutes during dinner in Anaheim came.

How was the experience for your players?
The experience for my orchestra was phenomenal!  They will carry this memory forever!  It gave them an opportunity to work in a professional arena, which doesn’t usually come for most until college.  Their playing will be so much stronger from here out.

Do you have any favourite songs from his tour?
We loved Pat-A-Pan!  David’s pronunciation of French was so good.  We LOVED the way he pronounced our orchestra name.  (It is often badly pronounced by most who try in the US.  Some examples:  “Juh-ness”, “Jew-ness”, “Juh-noose”, “Genesis”, “Juh-neese” and the list goes on…)

Favourite memories?
There are so many memories.  The first day that we met David was Wednesday, December 14th at Nokia in LA.  He and his band mates had just come back to California from a long nation-wide tour.  We wanted to play one of our pieces for them as a gift.  We chose Pirates of the Caribbean:  Dead Man’s Chest.  That evening during the concert, he introduced us and told the audience that we had played one of his favorite songs for him!  On the last night of LA tour in Anaheim, we gave him a huge card with words from our hearts to say thank you for the wonderful opportunity he shared with us and we gave him our orchestra mascot:  a pirate with a chest full of jewels.

What’s next for Symphonie Jeunesse?
Well, just after the Anaheim concert with David, Symphonie Jeunesse was scheduled to play at Disneyland for the Community Arts Showcase!  We played there yesterday.  We have holiday break and then we are scheduled to play two concerts for the professional symphony in January on invitation from the conductor.

In case you missed it, here’s a video of David announcing at the end of last night’s SLC concert that he’ll be going on a formal LDS mission.

And comments from the end of the last thread … please feel free to leave your own!

From Kizzi:

Just saw the announcement. Surprised, yet not. His decision and subsequent announcement alone are powerful statements of faith. He has never hidden his devoutness.

I can just imagine him channeling his magic in music to two years of service to humankind! If people, who are searching for hope and for a doorway to the divine, paths intersect with David’s, well, they will have a most powerful experience…

You, you may say
I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

Keep living your beautiful dreams David. icon_biggrin.gif

Refnaf:
I am feeling such love and respect for him…. when you watch this it is very clear that this is something he needs to do. What hits me so hard is that he is following the same “feeling” of spirit that brought us to him through AI. I can only be thankful that he follows his heart, else we would not have experienced these past 3+ years, met other fans and have a collection of music and videos to wait with. Now we are here together , and will be ready when he comes back.

Awestruck:
Kizzi – As usual you capture my thoughts completely

“I can just imagine him channeling his magic in music to two years of service to humankind! If people’s, who are searching for hope and for a doorway to the divine, paths intersect with David’s, well, they will have a most powerful experience…”

Refnaf – we WILL be here and ready when he comes back. I’m still crying as I have just watched.

Follow you heart David, it has not steered you wrong.

… and from me:
… my husband’s first words when I told him the news were, “Wow, well I guess you guys have been lucky to get to hear him.”

That says it all for me. We love and support you, David, in every brave path you take.

A Thousand Miles: A Vancouver fan’s Nokia recap

Source: Tumblr/stuckonacloud

“Cause you know I’d fly a thousand, 78 miles (or 1,735 kilometres) if I could just see youuu”……and I did just that last week … for a David Archuleta concert.

For three years I waited and hoped to see David perform at one of his Christmas shows.  This year I decided that I just could not wait any longer and made the trip from Vancouver to Los Angeles to see David at Club Nokia on his magnificent MKOC tour.  What an experience it was!

I finally had the most awesome experience of being there…..seeing him live and on fire with life, love, passion and the beauty of the season in his heart.

I was completely immersed in the moment with a very special young artist on stage. Interestingly, during David’s remarkable performance, I kept having visions of candles lit around the world, of hearts united in joy and peace. Okay, may sound a little corny but these feelings kept washing over me and I realized it was because David was really singing to the masses, adding his light and gift of joy in song to the world.  Many just hadn’t realized it.

The world is not the same because of it however and neither am I. Every nuance, every note left its mark and its vibration out there, in the world, in space and time, never to be erased just as it is never erased from your heart.  That was part of the beauty of it all.

David was in such fine form!  THIS, THIS is what I had waited for! My time had come and what a fantastic time it was!!  His sweet and lovable banter was just more icing on the cake.

I loved embracing every moment, his tremendous energy, his fun and funky upbeat, dancy tunes to his soulful, jazz (where does it all come from, whoa) to his incredibly joyful and lovable Fa La La La La with the kids (just loved seeing that live) and his most sacred, reverent, glorious renditions of beautiful Christmas carols.  David had never been better or sounded better to me.

Of course I can imagine that every fan who has seen him on this tour, anywhere. would probably say the same.  It’s as though he pushes a button in his brain and he morphs into a jazz mode, then pushes another button and he’s in pop heaven, then another and he is immersed in the classic beauty of timeless carols with the most masterful expression and delivery of each song.  How does he do it? Only one so gifted and versatile as David could master that.  And that Voice. It only seems to get better, really just left me in awe at how naturally and powerfully it flows.

Photo: Tumblr/laarchangel

Every song was a special highlight for me with phenomenal vocals and heart but one in particular was extra special….his beautiful rendition of O Holy Night.  My favorite Christmas carol, I have always wanted (badly) to hear David sing that song live.  That night I finally had my chance to hear it.  It was the most gorgeous, moving, heartfelt, reverent and powerful rendition of that song ever, for me. One of the most beautiful sounds I have ever been blessed to hear.

That song was also one of my dear mother’s favourite carols (she passed away this year) and at one point during the song it almost felt as though David was singing that song for me and for my mother … and for anyone else whose heart was filled to overflowing because of it. I honestly cannot describe how it made me feel. It truly made this first Christmas without my mom that much easier and that much more joyful. All I can say is thank you David, from the bottom of my heart.  It meant a great deal to me, so very special.

What a joy to see David live on this Christmas tour, I had such a great time!  Next to me was a delightful younger fan who was as fan happy as I was. I love how different worlds come together (the younger and the older) the older being myself, when it comes to David and his music.  We both got into the songs (no I’m not too old yet) ha, rooted for David together and tried to decipher his “amazingness” through eye contact at times.

Met some very nice people and almost ran into (literally) Jeanette McCurdy during intermission.  She is quite adorable.  So sweet that she was there along with many of David’s friends and people in the biz.  David has left me with the most wonderful memories, etched forever in the cells of my brain and my heart.

My mother would always tell me to do the things that bring me joy, the things I love to do.  Did travelling to this concert bring me joy? Was it something I loved to do?

Oh yes….big time!!!  The best Christmas gift for me this year.  I am so glad that I flew those thousand and seventy-eight miles (or 1,735 kilometres) 🙂 to see David in action.

(oh…and the way David beats on that drum during the incredible LDB, the guy can play!  Have a feeling we might see him sitting behind a drum set one day and playing his heart out. It was the best encore)!  I can still hear the beats just as I can still hear David’s glorious voice in song.

Thank you David, your concert was nothing short of phenomenal for me!

Merry Christmas!   Feliz Navidad!

P.S. nice review of the Santa Rosa show by PressDemocrat.com:

Still smiling. Still laughing. Still posing. That was David Archuleta Wednesday night at theWellsFargoCenterfor the Arts. Prior to his stop inSanta Rosaon his My Kind of Christmas Tour, Archuleta was doing what he does second-best: interacting with people.

It was then that he was near the end of his 90-minute meet-and-greet session prior to the 2 ½ hour concert when one of the last fans asked him to sing a few notes of one of his songs.

He kind of hesitated and then clearing his throat he did what he does best: sing.

It was amazing how his voice morphed from a giggling 20-year old kid to an accomplished singer in an obscure upstairs room at the WFC.

By now you certainly know the back-story of American Idol’s season 7 runnerup. What you don’t know, if you missed Wednesday’s concert, is how much he has matured as a singer, as a performer.

The WFC holds about 1,600 for a concert. Only approximately 700 attended Wednesday’s event. Archuleta sang 17 songs, 13 of them Christmas songs and one (Little Drummer Boy) was an encore.

Needless to say “Archie” isn’t appealing to everyone and honestly it’s hard to say why not. But the truth is that the kid can flat-out sing. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better version of Ave Maria, Silent Night or Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas than those produced by Archuleta.

His show was entertaining because he made it that way. He injected his own quirky personality on the evening and tweaked every song with some nuance that made it his.

All and all, a good job.

Following is what Archuleta had to say about the tour during a phone interview last week during a stop inIdaho.

“All I want to do is perform in front of as many people as I can who are willing to listen. I don’t want to force anyone to listen to my show if they don’t want to. If people enjoy what I am doing that makes it even better.

“Music is a huge part of my life, but it isn’t my life. It’s just part of my life. That’s how I like to think about it. The last Christmas tour was the most favorite tour I have ever done. Afterward I felt so good, like I had just eaten a good meal. I mean I love singing the pop songs, the songs that get people energized, but doing the Christmas tour gave me the chance to use elements that made me want to sing in the first place. What I loved about music.

“Christmas music is something that so many people can connect to and you want really put your heart into what you are singing.”

It was pretty obvious he did just that on Wednesday night.

Archugeezer’s Boise/Blackfoot recap: Feelings of love and Idahope

Photo illustration: Francisco Kjolseth, Salt Lake Tribune

It was a week to die for, and I did.  It happened here in little ol’ Idaho, the home of taters so tasty they have their own brand.  We also have people in Idaho; not many, but the ones I know are fine folks.  Yet, mention Idaho and others seem to think of Iowa; or Ohio.  This fact may explain why there was such an unusual commotion when The Archuleta showed up here and stayed for days!  I shall not name names, but some of us went a little bonkers.

I have lived in Boise, Idaho (That’s BoySee, not BoyZee.) for maybe 150 years now, and doing it in relative obscurity.  All of a sudden, Mr. Singing Sensation is putting us on the map, visiting and tweeting and vlogging about places and things I have seen and visited myself:  Shoshone Falls, Epi’s, Deseret Book, Borah High School, The Basque Museum, etc.  Oh, and Walmart; don’t forget Walmart.  Obviously this is the proof I need that David and I are kindred souls or something, right?  We should be hanging out together!

I am on the lookout when loyal David tweeters direct me to radio station KISS-FM where I hear that David will be joining the DJ’s at their tent booth outside Meridian’s Walmart, an appearance to support the “Toys for Tots” charity.  Feeling instantly charitable myself, I take a 15-mile side trip to check them out.  My ears are deathly afraid of KISS-FM, but it didn’t stop me from cruising through the parking lot and trying to act nonchalant at the same time.  When I heard David’s late arrival would conflict with my schedule to stand in line at the signing event, I left.  I also realized I had crossed the threshold into Stan-Land that morning.

Two weeks prior to David’s arrival, I learned the MKOC sales in Boise were not good.  “Dismal” was the one-word report.  I was heartsick; David deserved to see a full house; Boiseans needed to hear David.  And how many people would be at the signing?

Archugeezer & MissBianca's amazing promo project!

With a little design help from the talented @missbianca, I set about printing posters and promo cards.  I recruited granddaughter Emily to help me distribute them to businesses and schools, etc.  Emily convinced friends to assist and we went to work.  I don’t know if our efforts had much impact beyond making me feel better, but imagine my relief and delight when Deseret Book began to fill up and the line snaked back and forth across the store until it was forced outside for lack of room.

Archuleta Waiting Lines are events in their own right, sometimes hours filled with fan connections, story swapping, and hilarious reactions to seeing David.  Aside from the ever-popular “He’s so cute!” there were other favorite comments I overheard in Boise:

  • ”He’s real!  I just saw him move.”
  • “Whoa!  I love his hair!  Is there a color that’s blacker than black?”
  • “I want to take his picture, but I just keep shaking.”
  • “If I tell my daughter how much I like David, she won’t like him anymore.”
  • “Are you sure he doesn’t wear makeup?  Look at him!  Should we ask him?”

The line moves, and the moment finally arrives for each of us to be in front of David.  This is when he looks at you with laser eyes and instantly wipes out memory banks in your brain.  And then he smiles.  Zap.

As much as I think I know David, he doesn’t really know me.  He doesn’t ever recognize me, and I don’t remind him that he should just because I pay good money to fumble wordlessly through numerous Meets & Greets.  In spite of my Twitter bravado, I am no extrovert (understatement).  It isn’t David’s fault.  Besides, he does let me stare at him for a few seconds, so I come out ahead in the deal.

I made no plans for a Meet & Greet in Boise.  The poster and promo card project somehow earned me the right to escort 8 teenagers to the venue—2 believers, 5 on the fence, 1 meh.  I was less concerned about concert attendance by then, but still surprised at the line that wrapped around the block.  The girls joined the young and skinny set in the sardine pit; I was directed to another entrance where I ceremoniously fell on the stairs, injuring my pride and ruining any hope of being considered a cool chick.  A woman and two LDS missionaries ran to help and got me on my feet again.  I slowly found my way to the “skybox” and a welcome chair where I was cured by David Archuleta’s voice and an amazing concert.

My view from the top was fun.  I could see the crowd, observe reactions and watch my girls while they group moshed to Zero Gravity.  It was loud and lively, reminiscent of David’s Boise concert in 2009.  Fans were both respectful and responsive to him and his music.  When he began, I could hardly believe what I was seeing and hearing.  Something was different.  Oh, his voice was better than ever, but it was something else–his showmanship, his confidence, his banter, his dancing, his improvisations, his interaction with fans; something.  Something really good.  What was it?  Well, perfectly fantastic for one thing; and the crowd agreed.  They agreed after every song.  They agreed with a resounding roar after the “Little Drummer Boy” encore.  I left the venue with 8 girls—3 believers and 5 with giggling, gushing ODD.

Dropping by Borah High School.

Twelve hours later, Emily and I drove the 260 miles across southern Idaho to Blackfoot.  We had plenty to talk about, much to anticipate.  There were approximately 30 people at the Meet & Greet, a small group, including fans I was happy to see again, and others I wanted to meet.  After some instructions from “Stix” the affable host, David walked into the room; and there it was again, that different something.  David in charge.

Chatty David did the autographs and photos, which offered two opportunities to say something to him.  Fortunately for me, Stix did not separate the coherent fans from the incoherent and I was able to participate with my usual lack of aplomb and not be noticed.  Afterwards, we followed our host into the venue and waited for David to magically appear on stage and talk to us, which he did.  Lucky fans were picked to ask fan questions.  I knew the answers too.  (I have an awesome and unique question for David that I have been saving since 2008.)  Next, more magic; David sings.

Remember David’s tweet about a dream he had where he did a secret show for about 30 people?  It happened in Blackfoot.  David first explained that he was singing a particular song in the VIP sessions only, a song for his fans that expresses his appreciation and gratitude for their support and the opportunities they give him to pursue his dreams.  I wish I could remember what he said verbatim because it was sweet and lovely and sincere; but I was already fighting tears at that point.  He then sang “Good Place,” with Mark at the grand piano, allowing David to knock us dead with his vocals.  When David seamlessly modulated into “Let It Be,” I lost it.  As he finished with an ending only David can do, I momentarily wondered why VIP Nation had not provided us with seat belts.

David took requests for the second song and quickly settled on what he called “Chestnuts,” a completely gorgeous and impromptu version of “The Christmas Song.”

When the Meet & Greet ended, Emily and I found our seats to wait for the concert to begin.  Wow!  First row, just right of center, no barrier, stage not too high.  There was time to chat—any fan of David’s is a friend of mine; I met some new-to-me David fans.  I was also excited to see those four crazy road warriors from Utah, women I have come to love.  They told 13-year-old Emily she looked all of 17, which made her love them too.  Things finally got going with Jeff LeBlanc, a most suitable and talented opener for Mr. Archuleta.  I enjoyed his music and did not once look at my watch.

David’s turn.  You know what’s coming.  It shouldn’t surprise you; but it does.  The music constantly sat somewhere between fantastic and superb.  The band was stellar.  David sang and danced.  He told jokes, he laughed, he flirted; he owned us.  Before he finished the third song, he owned the building.  Emily had her own “best moment of the year” when David moved to within five feet of her, looked into her eyes and sang the entire second verse of “Crush.”  Aha!  Boise wasn’t a fluke.  The difference was still there and darned if he hadn’t amped it up again.  I cannot pick one song over another, one genre before another.  Each number was pure artistry and pure enjoyment, and the first half seemed to end in record time.

David returned for the second half with more Christmas fun and vocal goodies.  They just kept coming, each performance exquisite in his longing to share all he had with us.  At the end of “O Holy Night,” we were close enough to see the tears in his eyes; and as he finished, head bowed, he glanced quickly toward those sitting near him.  I could do nothing but put hand to heart and hope he knew how it touched me and how it mattered.  And then he was gone.

The entire house demanded an encore.  David eventually returned with his rousing yet reverent, rock star rendition of “Little Drummer Boy.”  If there are words to adequately describe this, I do not know them; but I had the unmistakable impression that David wanted to be sure we really understood just how it is going to be with him from now on, and why.

Viva la différence !

Four-show @DavidArchie recap: THIS is Christmas!

Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show: "Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies!" (Photo: Tumblr/ilovechudavidarchie)

I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to do this recap, but every time I pick up my pencil (yes, I still use a pencil), my eyes well up and I can’t see the paper. Archuleta, you are causing serious dehydration here.

I’m also still pinching myself that I got to attend the first four shows on this tour. Man, I must’ve done something pretty nice for someone special in a previous life.

Westbury

Source: Tumblr

I’ve never been to the first show of a David Archuleta tour and I can’t describe how edge-of-your-seat exciting Westbury was. Not knowing the set list or what’s coming next was thrilling beyond words. It was like the whole Westbury venue still held the magic from that last CFTH show – the air was electric.

The wild cheering started before David even came out. David’s often said he wonders if anyone’s even going to turn out to see him, but that screaming, roaring crowd left no doubt about how excited everyone was to see him. When the band started to play and David jauntily stroll-swaggered out for Sleigh Ride, a tidal wave of love poured onto that stage and over those BOOTS!

I don’t know if it was pre-tour anticipation or feeding off our excitement, but David exploded onto that stage like I’d never seen him. Ever. As Kizzi later overheard in the ladies room, he was “a beast!”

Commanding – even cocky at times – more than just the exquisite vocalist we know – he was a true showman.

I’m a huge jazz fan and when David grooved into the slowed down, sultry rhythm of “This Christmas,” I took up permanent residence in that song and need to send out change of address cards.

And the deafening ROAR when David said he was going to do some pop songs and everyone leaped to their feet to chant “Down, Down, Down, Down” made my heart swell.

You’ve now seen the videos for Fa La La and CEM and Little Drummer boy, but the shock and awe of so much amazingness was almost too much too handle. In the break and at the end, fans were literally walking around the lobby with glazed eyes and jaws hanging open, speechless. And the crowd was all ages, all genders – there was even a lineup for the men’s room… at a David Archuleta concert!!!!

Over all, I felt David was making a statement with this show. The same one he’s made in interviews. “You know what, no one can tell me who I am. THIS is who I am.”

Even introducing “and here is Mr. Jeff Archuleta” as the conductor of the youth orchestra seemed to be declaring, “This is my dad – he’s in my life and career as long as I want him to be so suck it up, people.” (He didn’t actually introduce him like that, btw. 🙂 )

One common denominator for all four shows for me was the outpouring of love for David – standing O’s (well-deserved) after almost every song. Spontaneous whoops and cheers after runs and glory notes. And David BEAMED! He lapped it up, flirted, cavorted, salsa’d, mistletoed and parumpapumpummed his way into every heart there. Joy, pure joy.

After the show, a bunch of us sat around stupified, trying to name even one other performer who could excel at so many different genres in one live show … jazz, pop, classical, country (Amy Grant), Broadway (CEM) and rock (LDB)? We couldn’t come up with a single name. I know some fans would like him to pick one genre and run with it but I like Renaissance Man David.

My biggest impression of this show was that everyone there “got” David and he knows and appreciates that. At one point in HYAMLC when he sang the line, “Through the years we all will be together, if the fates allow” he gazed slowly, from left to right, across the crowd, as if to say “we’re in this together, folks.” Chills rippled up my arms.

If I had to explain the difference between this show and the next three, I’d say Westbury was spectacular in its “Welcome back, David, we have MISSED you!” outpouring of love and David was explosive in his no-holds-barred fierce attack of each song. All that love and acceptance seemed to lift him onto our collective shoulders and give him the freedom to spread his wings and fly, baby, flyyyyyyy.

Irving Plaza had a younger, hipper vibe overall – lots of 20something guys and girls in the mosh – all hanging on his every word, roaring with laughter at every Davidism and he was totally loving every minute of it. He was the most flirty, playful for this show, I’d say … and his twinkly grin told me he knew that the crowd loved every “hint” of dancing he did and he worked those modest/hottest mooooves despite himself!

I loved the energy of the mosh. And “This Christmas” … I can’t even. This is my lame iPod video of that song… I took it because I knew I could. not. wait. to hear it again…and again…and again. It does give you a mosh-eye-view of how amazing that crowd was.

When he opened the gift boxes on stage with a sly “What have we here?” then tossed tour T-shirts into the mosh, saying “Ya, I’m cheesy,” again the crowd roared.

For Fa La La, I hope someone caught on video the girl who glomped David at the very end. HiLARious. He was barely off-stage when the DA-VID! DA-VID! DA-VID! chanting began to bring him back. And the wild man unleashed at the drums was the best. encore. ever. To be honest, I still can’t believe what I witnessed there. Epiphany? Primal warrior? Beating back the shackles people try to place on him? Or just plain old wild, crazy fun? Whatever it was, the crowd went absolutely WILD.

Verona

“That’s mistletoe! … I don’t know if it’s active while we’re on stage here though.” (Screencap from @Suttygal vid, click 2 watch)

For me, this show had the best acoustics, audio, lighting – and with so many Canadians there, the best crowd, obviously. 🙂

There was something else too. Call it “spirit” … but of all the four shows, this one gave me the most “MoTab” moments of feeling during FN, SN, OHN and of course Ave Maria.

Again, with the standing Os and spontaneous mid-song hoots and cheers for change-ups and big notes. Playful crowd too. One deep voiced fan screamed out, “I love you, David!” and another from the opposite side yelled, “I love him more!” and everybody laughed, including David.

And when “snow” fell from the ceiling, the winter wonderland ambience was complete. (Random memorable moment: When the chant for an encore started, KT told me she saw guys pounding their beer bottles on the table chanting for David to come back out.  🙂 ) And seeing so many wonderful fan-friends was the icing on an incredible cake.

Chatty David FTW! I don’t know if he was on a high from the three spectacular nights before, or if someone put extra sugar in his Cascadian Farms cereal that morning, but you could not shut him up. (Thank goodness, lol.)

“How many people here speak Latin? … That many?? That’s more than I thought! Wait, that’s Latin, not Spanish, right?)

Before the show I recognized an usher who’d “discovered” David at the CFTH show (and Miss Trish kindly gave her a CD!) and she said when she heard he was coming back to the Sherman Theater, she made sure she was working that night so she could see him perform again.

Oh, and the GP/LIB mashup in VIP…  he dedicated it to the fans and said that’s why he wrote it… so powerful, piano glitches and all, I almost keeled over from the beauty of it. I had a vision of David performing that on a stark awards-show stage someday, televised around the globe.

Overall, what these four shows left me with was the confidence that David now knows without a doubt that we get him and are behind him every step of the way.

Idol’s long over, Jive’s gone, but he’s still here making music … on his own terms … and we’re still here cheering him on … and we’re not going anywhere. I think this tour is his way of acknowledging and thanking us for that. But also to declare to the world (as Refnaf so beautifully put it in the last thread:

“When David took the drum sticks, held them high above his head and belted out the ‘Me and my drummmmm’ It was like he had a message for the world: This is me and this is what I do and I do it for Him, my WAY!!!”

You find it
You hold it
You feel its grace

These are words I wanna say
Every hour of every day
These are words that say how good it feels
To be here with you today

p.s. And I got to tell David in person how much I love Elevator. Life complete. 🙂

p.p.s. I LOVE YOU GUYSSSSS!!!!!!!! Happy Holidays! Joyeux Noél!!!!!!

It’s a good place: Verona VIP and concert recap!

Calling all angels in the snow!!!! (photo: DA.com, click pic 4 more)

I am attempting to recap one of the best weekends of my life here, so forgive me if this is all over the place.

Let’s start with the fact that while driving to Verona early Saturday afternoon, David Archuleta responded to my tweet! First time ever! This was just the best way to start my David-filled day! 🙂

After we got to Verona and met up with awesome David fans, it was time to go to the VIP. I’d never been to a VIP before, and I was realllllly nervous. To distract myself from the anticipation I started talking to people around me in line (why is it so much easier to talk to strangers that are David fans than it is to talk to other strangers?).

I start talking to this really awesome girl, Rosalinda, who was there with her mom. We start talking about how many times we’ve seen David (she had never seen David live before ever!) and where we’re from (she’s also from Canada!) and then after a couple minutes of this, she says to me “Was I talking to you on twitter a couple days ago?”. And I realize we had randomly been talking on twitter just like two days before that! So weird! And we were basically having the exact same conversation in person that we had had on twitter, lol.

Anyways, Rosalinda was maybe even more nervous than I was. And so excited. And I was almost as excited for her as I was for myself. Nothing like seeing the Archuleta in the flesh for the very first time! And she had been waiting a really long time for this!

Lots of standing in line and waiting later, it was finally time! We were all in the VIP room, and David just walked in the doors. You know, like he’s any other person. Which I guess he is, but I will never get over seeing him in person. It’s so unbelievable that he is standing right there in the same room as us! (from here on in, my memories are a little blurry, for obvious reasons haha).

Picture taking time was first and Rosalinda snagged us a good spot near the front of the line (probably like the 8th person to get to meet him). I had been planning on telling David 2 things: that my name is Anna, and that I’m from Canada. Simple enough, right? So when it was my turn, I walked up to him and said “Hi, I’m Anna from Canada” Hahahaha, what a dumb sentence! Am still embarrassed about that, lol.

Anyways this is basically our conversation:

Me: Hi, I’m Anna from Canada (because cool people talk like that)

David: Hi! (ridiculously amazingly adorable smile)

Me: Can I have a hug?

*Hug* (Anna dies)

David: What part of Canada are you from?

Me: Ottawa. It’s the capital (lol giving him a little Canadian education there hahaha)

David: Oh yeah! (said in a way that sounded like he knew at one point that Ottawa was the capital of Canada. Could have imagined that completely though)

*Pose for picture*

Me:(while walking away) Thanks for having a show so close to Canada, wouldn’t have been able to come otherwise!

David: *Some kind of “aww” or “ohh” or “no problem”. Can’t remember haha*

Kari: How close to Canada are we here?

Me: Only like a couple hours

Kari: Cool

David: Thanks for coming! (did I mention the ridiculously adorable smile?)

And then I sat down. And the best part (well, other than the hug) is that for next like half an hour, I got to just sit there and watch him talk to everyone and pose for all the pictures. It was so cool to just watch him. And he seriously NEVER stops smiling.

Anyways after everyone got their pictures taken, he came over to the keyboard and microphone (which were like 5 feet from where I was sitting on the ground!) and talked for a bit before he sang for us. First thing he said was that there were a lot of Canadians! And he asked everyone from Canada to raise their hands and there were a ton of us! David estimated about 1/3 of us were Canadians 🙂 Then he answered some questions and sang Good Place / Let it Be.

I have always LOVED the lyrics to Good Place. But for no real reason, the album track of it isn’t my favourite. But when he sang it, just him and the keyboard, man it was amazing. His little flubs on the keyboard didn’t even almost take away from the beauty of the song. It was soooo good! And I’m pretty sure Rosalinda liked it too 😛

Okay on to the concert now! The venue was great, the sound quality was awesome, David’s voice just soared. We had awesome seats. And David performed his little heart out! After the concert, I was trying to name major highlights of the show, and I ended up naming almost every single song! This Christmas was the first one that totally blew me away! The jazzy/soulful vibe was killing me. He totally rocked those vocals!

I was super excited to see Zero Gravity live! One of my favourite of his pop songs and the last time I had seen it was at the beginning of his solo tour. That is one song that the live performance has definitely evolved a lot since then! I was also majorly excited to see him perform HYAMLC and Pat-a-Pan, both songs I had watched tons of videos of from the CFTH tour. And both lived up to my expectations 🙂

Climb Every Mountain & Oh Holy Night were major highlights for me. Chills on both of these songs. I am very happy I finally got to see Oh Holy Night live, have really wanted to see that for a long time, and it was as moving as I thought it would be.

My specific memories of concerts are often a little hazy, but I have one extremely vivid mental image from the concert: When David took the drum sticks, held them high above his head and belted out the “Me and my drummmmm”. I was totally shocked (had not watched any videos and obviously did not read TOfan’s recap of the first concert close enough, because I had no idea that was going to happen) and blown away by David’s rock-star-ness. Like seriously who is this kid? That he’s so awkward and giggles for a minute when someone asks him “why are you so cute?”, but then comes back and does THAT?

Overall, concert was amazing, but one of my favourite parts of the whole weekend is that I got to share it with my mom ❤

I remember coming home during reading week of my first year of University and showing my mom videos of “this kid I saw on American Idol”. I sat her down and showed her youtubes all 3 videos that existed at that time (Audition, Hollywood week & Shop Around). Obviously neither of us knew at that point what this whole thing would turn into, but even then I felt the need to share David. And my mom was high up on the list of people I wanted to share him with. So when the MCOC Tour dates were released and there was a date that was actually possible for us to go to, I decided this would be a good time for my mom to experience the Archuleta live.

And I think she really enjoyed it! She kept saying things like “He really doesn’t hold anything back on stage” and “How does he perform like this night after night?”. And she even squealed a little when he went to sing Pat-a-Pan (her fav from CFTH) 🙂 And she definitely got a better sense of what the David fan community is like – I don’t think she thinks we’re all completely insane anymore, maybe just more like extremely hardcore 🙂

So there you go. Pretty good for one weekend.

@DavidArchie’s MKOC Tour: When love came down to the e-e-earth

Photo: @rhiminee.

I had the opportunity to spend 4+ days with TOfan, Refnaf and many other fans experiencing the first four David Archuleta My Kind of Christmas tour shows.

It was a feast for the senses in every facet.  In fact, it took four shows to notice all the various nuances a maturing virtuoso performer has added to his artistic repertoire, of an obviously focused effort of an up-and-coming raconteur — a magical storyteller, a growing ease beyond the singing — balancing song not only with message but also real entertainment, and so much more.

My overarching impression was experiencing the true meaning of Christmas through David Archuleta’s eyes….

… from the VIP where we are told it’s a “Good Place” and to just “Let It Be.”  Brilliant!

… to the soulfulness of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

… and the playfulness of the self-composed “Fa-la-la-la” with a joyful interaction with children in song and dance sharing his family’s Christmas traditions and stories

… the celebration and reminders of various aspects of the Season in the slate of Christmas songs selected

… the pop songs, offering an abundance of fun, light-heartedness, and a touch of angst

… the reminder that giving is what it’s all about in his backing and encouragement of  ChildFund to help children who may not even “make it to tomorrow”

… the vulnerability and beauty of David in his faith through the vivid sharing of his soul in the prayerful meditation tendered in “O Holy Night”

… the encore, “Little Drummer Boy” —  David beating his drum, his gift “…and then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum, Me and my drum.”

As the final song was performed at Stroudsburg, I realized the true meaning of Christmas, through David’s eyes, had been showcased …Soul, Tradition, Family, Play, Celebration, Music, Dancing, Storytelling, Fun, Light, and Giving revolving around the Birth of Jesus and Faith.

Beat that drum David.
