p.s. What is your favourite hilarious David moment?

p.p.s. Some of my favourite excerpts from David’s written blogs:

Thanksgiving 2008: Hey Guys! Just wanted to say that I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!! We were in New York this week, and I had a blast! Yesterday was the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and that was really exciting. I was on the Green Dog float, and there were tons and tons and tons of people on the sides. It was pretty chilly too, but I heard that it was a really nice day compared to previous years haha. I bundled and layered up as much as I could though. I sang Crush near the end, and a couple of songs played during our time going down the streets. And there’s a mouse in here. Sorry I know that was random, but I can hear it wandering around and it keeps squeaking. I didn’t think there would be mice here but I guess there are… But anyway….

Dec. 7, 2008: Other thing that happened this week: I lost my phone 2 days ago lol. That wasn’t nearly as fun and exciting as the other things, but oh well I guess. I’m pretty sure I left it on the plane, but they wouldn’t let me back on the airplane because the next destination it was going was an international flight to Vancouver. I guess you can’t go on the plane if it’s international because of security reasons or something. I couldn’t do anything about it either because we had to catch another flight going to Orlando, so I went to Orlando as my phone went to Vancouver. I’m actually kinda envious that my phone got to go to Vancouver before I did. I wish I went too lol.

Dec. 19, 2008: …Oh and another thing. I have this drawer in my room where I keep a lot of memories in, like tickets, cd’s, papers, letters, etc.. and I open it up to put some more stuff… When I open it, all my papers are chewed up and there’s a nest mice made from all of my memories! I tried saving as much as I could, but there was a lot of damage done and I had to throw a lot away :(. But it’s ok because it was an excuse to clean up haha.

And the all-time winning rotfl entry is *drum roll*:

June 16, 2008: … I got to spend the night (and just for the night, not even a day) in Utah, I couldn’t sleep, and I mentioned the cats on twitter … but I wrote a letter to a friend and put it in the mailbox that night, or I guess morning, lol, so I wouldn’t forget to send it before I had to leave to CT. Well funny thing, when I turned the doorknob it was locked. You can open it inside but not on the outside. I didn’t have my phone with me, and no one was answering the door, I tried throwing normal pebbles at the window but that didn’t work either. So there I was in my PJ’s outside, without shoes, and cold! I ran down the street to keep the blood going and went to a friend’s house, hoping they’d be awake or more responsive than at my place haha. I knocked on the window that I thought was my friend’s room, but I’m guessing that I guessed wrong or he wasn’t awake, or something. I went back to the front and just knocked on the door, and thankfully his dad happened to be awake. So he opens the door and there I am standing in my PJs feeling stupid, but I was so glad to go inside somewhere warm! Anyway I eventually got back into the house, and headed to the airport a couple hours later. heh.

Happy Thanksgiving, American cousins!

This is how David looked on Canadian Thanksgiving. 🙂

In a strange twist of fate, Refnaf and I have spent the past two Thanksgivings (Canadian this year, American last year) in the U.S. … listening to David Archuleta sing. Definitely something to be thankful for.

And now here we are back in Canada over American Thanksgiving weekend.

To mark the occasion, I wanted to reflect on the friendships I’ve made thanks to David and his music — on both sides of the border… and beyond! Everyone here, for starters. I think I’m just as thankful for those friendships as I am the joy and hope and pure fun David’s voice and songs have brought me.

The day I discovered David on A.I. was also the day I said good-bye to a beloved friend and never in my wildest dreams did I think that discovery would bring me new friends, true friends. I will forever be beholden to David for that and so much more.

Watching Season 7, it was David’s voice and the way he interpreted a song  that captivated me. It never occurred to me there would be much more to come… that he would write his own songs a mere two years later … great songs. And even if that thought did cross my mind, I figured it would be beautiful melodies he would come up with, based on his flair for improvisation.

But great lyrics? Did not see that coming.

Yes, once again, I underestimated The Archulator. The quirky, dorky genius who came up with these incredible lines:

Photo: Taryn Preston via FOD

I think I spot a silver lining
hiding in the grey

Every time I hear that line, it makes me smile. The acknowledgement that yes, there’s a ton of grey out there but, hey, take a closer look and tell me what you see. How pure David is that?

It’s the butterflies / That keep you feeling so alive, so alive

As you may have noticed, I am sort of a fan of this song and yes, I could’ve quoted the whole dang thing for you. But if I had to pick one line from it as my favourite (and to be kind, I thought that was best), this would be it. Just like the rest of the song, at first glance it seems so simple, almost childlike… but then the beautiful truth hits you like a freight train and the depth of meaning behind these simple words settles into your heart … like a butterfly.

Paint it over if your world is grey… Cut the ribbon if it starts to fray … You’ve gotta see the hand for it to pull you out

This is such an uptempo song that I usually get carried away in the tempo of it and then those words catch me by surprise. “You’ve gotta see the hand for it to pull you out” is one of my favourite lines on the whole album. It’s so true. I’ve thought about that one a lot.

Will I turn the corner, see my future, in a beautiful faaaaace? Maybe.

Such raw, exposed longing and he literally draws “a little pict-cha” … can’t you just see him walking around the corner and spotting that face every time he sings that? sigh

You find it. You hold it. You feel its grace

Here, it’s not just the words but the heartbeat rhythm of the three phrases that makes it so powerful for me. When David sings “grace” I feel like falling to my knees.

And now, my most favourite line of any of David’s songs:

I just want to steal this moment right away from time

I can’t even articulate why I love this line so much, I just do. I feel it under my skin. It’s not even that it speaks to me, it’s almost like he was reading my mind and stole it away from there.

Okay, enough about me… what do you guys think? What are your favourite David lyrics? And what are you most thankful for on this wild ride of ours?

The David Archuleta Galaxy

A time-lapse exposure captures the streaks made by stars over sandstone formations in Utah. (Photo: Bruce Dale, National Geographic.)

Many of today’s superstars have risen, exploded onto the scene really, only to burn out like a supernova. Burning with an intensity that is fast, furious, and eventually forgotten – except perhaps for the notoriety surrounding their explosive, destructive and fatal fall. Their tenure in the music industry results in a fleeting glimpse into a world unrelated to who they actually were as people.

I believe that David Archuleta’s star, on the other hand, will be defined in a totally different way.  Like a star in our heavens – appropriate, huh? – the core will be built to burn with intensity almost as bright as the supernova, but with staying power based on a consistency of generated power and heat fueled by almost limitless energy. The rise will be slow and steady yet lasting – one fan, one stage hand, one charity organizer, one fellow musician, one critic at a time.

David staying true to himself by grounding himself with his sense of family, drawing from the faith that propels him and displaying the humility inherent in him will make a very significant difference by allowing him to maintain a single identity on and off the stage.  Meld all of this with his exceedingly generous spirit and you have a musician who absolutely loves doing what he is doing, has a strong sense of self and follows his dream for the sake of others before his own.

No matter the slow pace, those he touches will become part of the nebulous cloud that will ignite his star as it radiates its heat outward reaching out to those whose closed hearts have not yet woken.

I’ve got nothing else better to do…

… than write my homage to the bonus track song on the Japanese edition of The Other Side Of Down by David Archuleta.  The song is titled “Nothing Else Better To Do” and it’s written by David Archuleta, Emanuel Kiriakou, Andre Merritt and Lindy Robbins.

I absolutely love this song and I’d like to show it to you through my eyes. David has mentioned several times that “Elevator” is a visual song and I think “Nothing Else Better To Do” is a sensory song.  It is a song of intense love.

“Sometimes when you talk I don’t hear a thing
Don’t take it wrong
I look at your face and bells start to ring
Then my mind’s gone
If I was a fire / You would make me burn”

We could attribute these lyrics to David’s tendency to get distracted, but what they conjure up for me is an image of someone so totally in love that he does get distracted from whatever he might have been doing when he’s around this girl.  That’s what it’s like when you first fall in love with someone.

It takes kindling to make a fire burn.  This is very visual.  The meaning of kindling in this instance is “to excite interest or feelings in.”  She is the kindling and the spark that makes his love passionate.  The fire is also representative of light.

“It doesn’t take much for you to break down / My gravity
You’ve got my heart stuck … stuck on a cloud / And I can’t speak
But if I was a book / You’d be every word”

Gravity and clouds are recurrent themes not only in David’s songs but in a lot of pop music. Just as in “Zero Gravity” and “Parachutes and Airplanes” David (or the protagonist) is high in the clouds and his heart is staying there in “NEBTD.”

He’s dumbstruck with love, but if he was a book (or wrote a book) it would be entirely about her.  She is his inspiration.

David and Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy: "I've got nothing else better to do than watching the smile light your face."

“25 hours every day
I got nothing else better to do
than watching the smile light your face
It doesn’t get better than you
All that we need is a starlit sky and you and me
Oh oh oh oh o o it’s true
I got nothing else better to do”

In the chorus, “Light” is at play again.  Her smile “lights” her face.  A “starlit” sky reiterates the “light” image.

“An island of green in blueberry ice / Wish we were there. But you make me feel I’m in paradise / Anywhere”

Remember when they asked David where he’d go to get away and he wouldn’t answer because he said then everyone would know where he was going, but that it was very nice?  Well, I think he just might have been envisioning a beautiful green island surrounded by the bluest sea the color of blueberry ice.  The location could be anywhere and that’s the point.  She makes him feel he is in paradise no matter where they are.  She is his paradise.

“If I was a song, you would make me sing”

Some fans didn’t seem to like this line, saying a “song can’t sing.”  But, a song is just words and notes on paper until the singer is inspired by something or someone to sing it.  She brings the song to life.  I actually think it’s profound.

"You’re velvet on a red cupcake.”

“You’re velvet on a red cupcake
Sound a cello and a violin make”

I really have no doubt this is a tip of the hat to his fans with the cupcake image, or else they were really hungry and one of the writers is really into red velvet cupcakes.  It is an image of strong desire.  She is the icing on his cake.

What is more beautiful than the sound a cello and violin make?  This is auditory imagery. Maybe it’s because both of my sons played cello so I love hearing the sound, but it also makes me think of heartstrings (deepest feelings/affection).

"You put the rings around the moon."

>> Rings around the moon are an actual phenomenon caused by “the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring.” That’s rather technical, but it’s a beautiful aura around the moon.  This is light imagery again.  Moonlight has always been associated with love and the rings add a dimension of rarity to it all. And every single time he’s close to her, oh oh oh oh eh eh eh.  That’s a “feeling” line.  He’s crazy about her.  It reminds me of the sensory tone of Colbie Callait’s “Bubbly.”

I like the island vibe to “Nothing Else Better To Do” and I like the maturity of the song.   It may be a song about young love, but it’s not puppy love. It’s a more mature love song.  It actually has a Jason Mraz quality to it.  If you haven’t heard Jason’s song “Bella Luna,” I suggest you give it a listen also.

That’s my interpretation of what this song means to me. Why do I think it’s a great song?Partly because it isn’t overproduced. David’s voice is clear, strong, front and centre, right where it belongs.  There are not too many “overlays.” While I think the electronic sounds of the “eh eh eh’s” in the beginning and on the word “better” towards the end are unnecessary, it’s not overdone and doesn’t bother me.

The melody is soothing and charming and I love David’s lower register.  The harmonies in this song are absolutely beautiful.  I mentioned in a comment on a fan site that I sometimes wish David was twins because it would be so incredible to hear both the melody and harmony sung live.  To me, NEBTD “ticks all the boxes” as Simon would say!

How do you all feel about the song?

David Archuleta Asia update

(Awesome audio/Credit: pinkamech) [And MKOP with intro from booradleigh HERE.]

Just watched this video and am bursting with pride for a whole bunch of reasons:

1) Love this song (and the singer 🙂 )

2) Love to see David accompanying himself on MKOP for the first time in public.

3) Love the way he smiles when everyone starts to sing along.

4) Love the “shshshshsh” for quiet so everyone can hear David.

5) I even love the stumbles over the keys half way through. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s our kind of perfect, am I right?

Watching him playing and singing his own song, not a cover, and everyone loving it and wanting to sing along just seems so right, so meant to be … like a glimpse of singer-songwriter David of the future … a time when he’ll sing and play most, if not all, of his songs to even bigger crowds all singing or swaying along to every word. Sigh.

p.s. Here’s an update from JackRyan4DA on the Manila preparations for the upcoming ArchuInvasion (brought over from end of last thread). Thanks, JR!:

Here’s the sked:

16 Nov. (Tues.) – DA arrives MNL; Pinoy Archies will welcome him
– DA to hotel where another group of Pinoy Archies will also welcome him

From thereon, he will stay in the hotel to conduct the media rounds – radio/TV/1-on-1 interviews, special features, presscon, phoners, etc… till the afternoon of the 17th (Wed) for the Mall Show / M&G.

Just like in SG where he conducted 20 interviews in a day, his sked is a bit punishing here. I dunno how they can fit all the interviews scheduled for him and still have great voice for

17Nov (Wed) – Mall Show/M&G at 5 p.m. Lots of promo for this event. The whole ShoeMart Mall has tons of huge, gorgeous & strategically located posters/standees:

Regular Standees (big ones are 4x):

There are 2 types of passes available to watch David:

1. Buy TOSOD CD (Php435/$10++) at the SkyDome Gate. 1st 400 will get their CDs signed and seat at the floor seated section.

2. Buy 3 SM Eco bags (Php160/$3.75++). This is perfect for those who do not want to buy another CD but want to watch the show. However, no CD signing & they occupy the bleachers. We asked the booth ladies yesterday and they said ticket sales is brisk!

18 Nov. (Wed.) – DA leaves for the U.S.

Needless to say, we are all stoked, spazzing & giddy w/ excitement.

David Archuleta: Thinking outside the box

Photos: DianaLevine.com

People have tried to put David Archuleta in a box from the start.

In Chords of Strength, I remember reading that when David was age 12 or 13, just after Star Search, Jeff Fenster told the Archuletas that his record label didn’t know where David would fit into the music world at that age, and maybe it would be better if he worked on music for a few more years, learned to play the piano and come back then. Naturally, in what box would you put a little white kid labeled the “Soul Man from Utah”?

Then came American Idol and the attempt to limit David to Josh Groban-like songs — he got criticized (by Simon, at least) every time he tried to venture out of this area.

And yet, let me remind you about We Can Work It Out (despite the memory lapse, his vocals were good), You’re The Voice (an amusement park, heh Simon), With You (vocals were good again, only the movement was awkward).

David was smart, imho, to stick with what The Powers That Be on Idol wanted to hear.  Could David “fit” into this box?  Why, yes, he could — if he wanted to.

Think of the Jerry Lewis telethon and TAGGB.  Think of the ALMA awards and CELD.  Think of his album, Christmas From the Heart. Second in sales only to Bob Dylan for Christmas albums in 2009.

Let’s now look at David’s two pop albums.  His debut album, done while on tour, was mostly written by others, though David still managed to do some writing and got songs into bonus land.  Now we have The Other Side of Down, a completely different album than his debut one. More indie in flavour, though still with a pop influence — especially in some songs. We definitely hear more David on this one with 10 of 12 being co-written by him and the bonus tracks as well.

Could David fit into the pop box?  Has his debut album reached platinum yet? It was so very close last time I checked.  Yes, I do believe so!  What about the indie box?  Well, according to sales let’s “give it some time.”  This is where he seems to want to be at this point in his career. David is still experimenting and will continue to show us different facets of his musicality.  I don’t believe this will ever stop with him.  He is just too curious.

Let’s take a look at what a box represents in terms of form.  It has four sides and four angles, period.  Not enough for someone like David who is so multifaceted.

How about a heptagon?  Seven sided right?  With David’s musical talents still expanding, he has shown us so many different sides already and this will only grow as time moves on.

Dazzling dodecagon

I vote for the dodecagon – in geometry, a dodecagon is any polygon with 12 sides and 12 angles.  Now this sound more like it. My photoshop skills are non-existent so I will try to describe it for you…

A bright glittery mirrored dodecagon to reflect the talent and artistry and many faces of David Archuleta.  Place David on the outside of the dodecagon looking at it.   Being placed inside something limits you, confines you, and has boundaries, so let’s not do this with David please.  I would like to list the many skills of David and encourage you to help me out in completing the list to be able to fill each mirrored face of the dodecagon.

"Please don't ask me to wear this crazy shirt ever again." Photo: A. Rapoport/Getty Images for Fox.

1. Balladeer

2. Pop artist

3. Indie artist

4. Duet specialist (have you heard the clip of Silent Night with Orla Falon yet?  And, don’t forget No Air with Jordan Sparks)

5. Soulful contemporary artist.

6. Singer-songwriter

7. Improv talent

8. Pianist / Guitarist

9. Jazz artist (check any Star Search performance out if you haven’t already done so.  And what about Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?)

Perhaps in the future we will find a need to look for a larger geometric form to accommodate the ever expanding list… what about a disco ball?

What do you guys think? How would you fill the other dodecagon sides of David?

12 steps toward the other side of down

Am I blue? (@niceprtty photo)

Yup. If there was ever any doubt about whether I have ODD (which there wasn’t, really), now I am (and my family is) very certain that I indeed suffer from it. Except that I don’t suffer – I enjoy every minute of it. I’ve been listening to The Other Side Of Down non-stop in my car and at work, and I’ve found an interesting hidden meaning on the album. David actually guides the listener through a 12-step-program on how to be cured from the Archu-diction.

Step 1. Put one foot front of the other. (Okay, easy enough.)
Step 2. Keep climbing. (This one takes a bit of stamina.)
Step 3. Stomp the roses. (Preferably ones that your significant other didn’t buy, since they might never bring you flowers again if you stomp them to the ground.)
Step 4. Let the stars in your eyes shine.
Step 5. Hang on and hold on tight.
Step 6. Take a step back from your new ringtone. (But what if it’s a David song?)
Step 7. Walk in your own two shoes (And really, you shouldn’t walk in anyone else’s — the doctors say that’s bad for your feet.)
Step 8. Walk on a trampoline. (Yeah, I don’t know how this would work in practice. But trust The Archulator.)
Step 9. Keep on running. (After all that stomping and climbing? Not everyone is as fit as you, David.)
Step 10. Stop and just look around. (Phew. A well-needed break.)
Step 11. Don’t look in the mirror. (It’s probably one that adds 10 pounds anyway.)
Step 12. Walk on, live on and be strong. (Together, Archies. Together.)

Wow. That Archie sure loves his exercise, huh? Unfortunately his efforts of curing people from ODD are all in vain, because most of us are in this elevator for life. And ODD tends to be contagious….

As I’ve told you earlier, I’m a gym instructor for seniors, meaning people who are retired. I make all the warm-up and stretching routines myself, to David’s songs of course.

A day in the life photo: aol.com.

Now, one would think I’m a kind-hearted gal, who just wants her class to completely empty their minds of all stress and trouble. But no. I’ve found the relaxation-sequence is the perfect time to brainwash people. They are drifting towards sleep, letting the music fill their senses, kinda like those tapes that you listen to while sleeping, that repeat mantras like “you don’t need to smoke to be happy” or “you are a worthy, important person,” or the one I have that says “krhrhhrhrhh” (that’s not actually a tape – it’s my fiancé snoring.).

All they can hear is the soothing voice of a young man, singing straight from his soul. By the time the song ends, people realize they need to wake up, but all they want to do is go back to that magical voice. Which is where I step in. About 90% of the people in my classes have asked me who the singer is and commented on how beautiful his voice sounds. Of course I try my best to act casual when proudly telling them the singer is half-Honduran, half-American, only 19 years of age and very humble. Then I show them a picture of him, and the reaction is always the same. “What a beautiful looking boy.”

Beautiful indeed. So beautiful, that to me “My Kind Of Perfect” might as well have been named “David.”

ArchuFrenzy in Fresno

*time out for mini-rant*

Okay, so this unplugged David Archuleta mall show had virtually zero publicity, David only tweeted about it the day before and the event isn’t even listed on his official site … um, NO events are listed on his official site … and yet throngs of people swarmed the mall to see him.

One tweeter reported “I survived! Yikes that was craziness!!! I’m so sorry for those people who were super rude and crazy running after him and laying on his limo” and another “@DavidArchie Im sorry I cried infront of you! 😛 but thanks for saying to not cry & also putting on an amazing concert” … crying girls?? people laying on his limo???

Of course, because he WOWED each and every person there with his incredible awesomeness … I know, I know, as he always does … and yet even this radio station probably is not playing his songs. What gives?

As emmegirl said at the end of the last thread, “Just watched the TOSOD twitvid. These songs acoustically… how he does this and produces such amazing results is beyond me. How many singers could do these songs (incl My Hands, Crush etc) acoustically and have them sound like that? Am I just out of the loop (maybe, because I follow no one else but him), but do other singers do all of their songs acoustically like this, and if they do, do they sound like that? Just wondering…

No, they definitely do not. I happened to be reading an ew.com article about Taylor Swift’s huge album sales and the comments from many of her ardent fans included remarks like, “Her voice isn’t the greatest but…” and “You can tell she’s been trying to improve her singing!” … and these are her fans!

Not to pick on Taylor, I think she’s a smart, savvy, talented young lady, but comments like those do make me question whether singing talent even matters anymore in the “business” side of the business.

Well, it matters to us … and it sure as heck matters to David. And everyone else? It’s their big, big, BIG loss.

*mini-rant finito* … back to our good place….

Songs in the key of David

Ms. Happy used to do a feature on this very topic and when I was reminded of this song, “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” tonight, I thought I’d revive it! (Hope you don’t mind, Happy!)

Photo: EKS Challenge

Everyone has certain songs they’d love to hear David Archuleta sing and this one is definitely in the Top 5 on my list. I first heard it sung by a friend in a music class and I broke down in tears when she got to, “I sing because I’m happy / I sing because I’m free.

It was only later I found out it was a hymn and that it was included in the movie Sister Act 2.

It gives me chills just thinking about David singing this someday. On the other hand, the heart and soul and spirit he’d bring to it might just slay us all for good … I’m willing to take the risk, though, how ’bout you?

Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for Heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
A constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches over me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

What about you guys, what songs would you love to hear David sing? And why?

Here’s the full song from the Sister Act 2 soundtrack (with Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount):
