David and The Machine

Photo: Celebration of Dreams Gala

Thanks to @jonerz, I’ve been subscribing for a while to Bob Lefsetz’s “Lefsetz Letters” blog about the music industry. I don’t read all of his posts, but I thought this recent one held some great insights, generally and in terms of David’s career.

Bob’s take on what separates one-hit-wonders from music acts with longevity reinforces, for me, what David has said in recent interviews about wanting not to rush things he’s working on, and about building a foundation and concentrating on developing his own music, his own sound … words like these:

“It’s just a matter of being able to take that time, I think, to figure out the person I want to be and the artist I want to continue becoming. I didn’t want to just go with, ‘OK, I’m just gonna listen to whatever these people say because they know how to make me successful and rich and famous.’ As appealing as that might sound, that just doesn’t appeal to me. I guess my priorities are different. I want to make sure that I make music that lasts.

“I’ve been experimenting. I’ve been writing. Aside from the Asian tour I did this summer, I’ve taken time aside just to kind of figure out, “OK, what do I want to do with myself? What do I want to do with my life? What’s important to me for the years to come?” instead of feeling like you need to keep moving with the current of success or else you’re not gonna get anywhere. I definitely want to do music for the rest of my life. So I just want to make sure that I’m doing music in the way that I feel is the way I need to.” Rest here.

I’m still happy David decided to go on Idol … yes, for selfish reasons, but also because it gave him at least a core fan base to build on that may not have been possible otherwise. The strings attached included putting him in that “made by the machine” category that he clearly does not want to be in or he’d have taken those other offers Jive presented to him.

As he told LDS Living Magazine recently:

“ Record label management… would say, ‘You don’t know what you want to be. This is who you are.’ But I told them, ‘You know what? That’s not who I am. Regardless if that’s what will get more radio play, that’s not what I’m supposed to do. I don’t want double-meaning lyrics. I don’t want things to be taken the wrong way. Music has an impact, and as an artist I can influence the way people think, the way they feel. No one can tell me what I am and I am not. I’m just going to be true to myself.’”

This particular line in Bob Lefsetz’s post really struck me: “That’s your mission, convincing people who think everything’s crap you’re not” — because I’m one of those people who think everything’s crap (or at least most acts who are shoved down our collective throats) but immediately noticed three years ago on “Shop Around” night that David is not.

Anyway, read on and let me know what you guys think:

I want you to read this article from today’s “Guardian”: “When Bands Fall Off Cliffs.”

For those on mobiles or just too lazy to click through, the subtitle is: “You sell a couple million albums. You’re adored. Then 90% of your fanbase deserts you – and your record label isn’t far behind. Rob Fitzpatrick investigates band collapse syndrome.”

It all comes down to radio. Either it plays your new single or you collapse. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Doesn’t matter what you did in the past, if your new record ain’t a hit on the radio, you’re toast. Just look at Christina Aguilera. Her album stunk up the joint, she got no traction at radio, and she had to cancel her whole damn tour.

Didn’t used to be this way. Used to be bands were developed slowly. The audience saw them as more than one-hit wonders. These are the classic rock acts. Once we got to the video era, band shelf lifes shortened. Now it’s nonexistent.

If you were made by the machine.

Hypnotize and mesmerize 'em, D.!

If you made it outside the system, if it was about touring and gaining fans slowly, you’re laughing all the way to the bank. Recorded music revenue may be way down, but Phish is still cleaning up on the road, despite never having a mainstream radio hit, without having any radio airplay whatsoever, except for pockets of college and Triple-A exposure.

And then there are the electronica acts. Arguably, Tiesto is the biggest touring act in the business. Sure, there are a handful of acts who could draw more, but Tiesto can do it night after night, every show is different, people come for the experience. And most of America’s got no idea who Tiesto is, they’ve never even heard the name.

Today’s big Top-40 star, Rihanna, if she fails at radio next time, she’s in the same boat as Christina Aguilera. Same deal with Katy Perry. See why the major labels are up in arms, why they’re freaking out? You can’t sell a record and nothing lasts, how’s that for a paradigm?

Now the above Feist numbers are far from terrible. And everyone says the record is good. But let’s leave the music out of the equation. Last time around she had a hit, if she doesn’t have one this time…she’s going to fade into obscurity. There won’t be a farewell tour, no cleaning up financially before she returns to the Great White North. Oftentimes, the revenue you book when you’re hot is the only revenue you’re ever gonna get. Save your pennies, because the future is dark and dismal.

So what game do you want to play?

If you want to last, head straight for the wilderness. Leave the big machine behind. Work neither radio nor television. Concoct a 10-year plan instead of a 10-minute plan. It’s probably gonna take you that long to get noticed and build. But once you’ve made it, you’ll have a fan base that supports you. You may starve until you’re 30 and not even be comfortable until you’re 40. And it’s not your fault, it’s hard to reach people and they’re conditioned to believe everything is evanescent and close to worthless, why should you be different?

The machine lauds new music and movies, which flow over the audience like a tsunami. You didn’t like last week’s flick? Don’t worry, we’ve got 10 more for you this weekend! Many people tune out. They believe there’s nothing good out there. But you know this is not true. But it’s hard to convince those who believe otherwise. That’s your mission, convincing people who think everything’s crap you’re not.

And as soon as they see you dancing, in fashion shoots, hear your song on Top-40 radio, they put you in that category, of here today, gone tomorrow. We used to look up to those trumpeted in the media. Now they’re fodder for ridicule. That’s what TMZ and Radar are all about. Everyone knows your name, but they’re laughing at you.

You’ve got to have fans to survive. View it like a marriage. You date plenty, but the thought of being hitched up to these people is anathema, you’d rather commit suicide. You’re looking for that one true love. Same deal with establishing a fan of a band.

Sharing David

Pic: The Voice

The DVD is in the player… hot tea in our mugs, cozy blankets around us and my heart is a flutter. The time has come for me to share David with my cousins — two women of my age who have traveled from Holland to visit. Though they live far away and we only see each other every few years, it always seems we can start right where we left off … sharing all our ups and downs. Such is the joy of family! I have had to catch them up on all my recent travels and life experiences, of which David has become a huge part. I really want them to “get” how special David is and why I am a fan, why I would go to the lengths I do to hear him sing.

Pic: MoTab Newsletter

We had done the CN Tower, Niagara Falls, a trip north for the October colours, the Cranberry Festival and lots of shopping. I suggested we should set aside one evening to celebrate Christmas together, since we never have the opportunity. My little plan was coming together, bwahaha. What better way could there be to celebrate Christmas than David Archuleta singing Christmas truth with his sparkly eyes and lovely tux??? What better showcase for rationalizing fandom than the Glad Christmas Tidings DVD??? Then they would understand my desire (need) to see him again and again. The voice would be heard and all would be well.

Problem is, doing this seriously turns my stomach into a fluttering mess. I am certain that many of you can relate to the intense feeling of protection we feel for David and his gift. Sharing it with anyone who has the potential to react indifferently to the magic tones of perfection is truly gut wrenching. I want so badly for them to hear what I hear, to connect to the spiritual through David’s voice, to be caught up and whisked away into fandom. I can hardly stand the anticipation…. I warn them not to talk during his performance, which gets serious looks with a few giggles mixed in…. My sister is here as well, and she knows (and understands but does not share) my dedication to this young man. My palms are sweaty as the music begins… and I get shaky just thinking about it…

Pic: David Archuleta Vietnam

They LOVE the choir, but say little when David performs (they heeded my warning, haha, no one interrupts The Archuleta)…. I want them to cry, cheer, give a Standing O and be mesmerized the way I was the first time he hit me across the head by singing “Imagine” all those years ago…. But this was not to be.

They said they enjoyed it very much, …the choir was awesome, the venue was huge, the dancers were nice… his voice was good, that he seemed so young, that he really was cute…. Blah blah

I decided to go a bit further and played David’s behind the scenes interview, after which they responded with “He really seems to have a warm heart” and I said
YES HE DOES!!!

Made me realize what a great thing I have and am experiencing… even if the only ones who really get it are those reading this!!!!!

((((hugs))) to all of you!

David Archuleta’s new music video leaked (not really)

[EXT., HONG KONG STREET, NIGHT]

The moon glows above a fancy schmancy Hong Kong hotel that serves cheap breakfasts. The camera pans up to the top floor.

[INT. SWANKY HOTEL SUITE, NIGHT]

We zoom in through a penthouse window where we find a sleeping Ricky Archuleta, tossing and turning as he clutches a blind, battered blue Totoro. We hear a much-cheered-by-fans lower register start to sing:

I can’t sleep, I’m feeling wide awake
Tonight is taking its time
How much more before the morning breaks
And I can leave it far behind?

[INT., SOLD-OUT CONCERT ARENA]

The scene dissolves into a dream sequence. Ricky’s on stage in front of a cheering crowd, but instead of his band, he’s jamming with the Peanuts gang and singing ….

peanuts dancing animated gif Pictures, Images and Photos

‘Cause every time I try to close my eyes
I only end up seeing  memories of you
And it’s never enough
I’m waiting

Ricky’s not-quite-green-not-quite-brown-more-like-amber eyes light up as he spots someone in the audience. She’s wearing a crossing guard vest. He stops dancing with Lucy and walks to the edge of the stage to reach out his hand. But as he gets closer, she turns her head. Her long hair twirls in slow motion as she walks away so he can’t see her face. He leaps off the stage and crowd surfs toward her but she’s just out of reach.

Even though you’re gone I can hear your heart
It’s calling out my name like a flash in the dark
If this is just a dream I won’t give it back
I’ll find a way to make it last
One more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go

[INT., BEDROOM, DAWN]

Ricky wakes suddenly, sits up and grabs his Dr. Seuss alarm clock. But the face has no hands so he tosses it into the fireplace and pulls the blanket over his head.

[INT., EMPTY CONCERT HALL]

We dissolve to black and white where K. Dangerous is teaching Ricky to play the drums. Ricky keeps getting distracted by non-stop texts until K. finally rolls her eyes, throws down her drumsticks and stomps offstage … to a waiting Ryan Gosling.1

One text in particular causes Ricky to leap from the drum kit and run outside.

I am keeping every word you said
But how much longer can I hold on
‘Cause whispers echoing until they fade
Remind me that you’re already gone

[EXT., BUSY STREET, SUNSET]

Ricky spots an unattended Google Earth Tricycle, leaps into the driver’s seat and cruises the streets of Hong Kong as the sun sets. As it grows dark, he slows his pedalling and begins to give up hope. And then … in the distance … the moonlight catches a flicker of something … oh sweet festive angel wings, could it be??? Yes!!!! He spots the fluorescent X on the crossing guard vest! The camera follows Ricky as he pedals furiously to meet her walking towards him. Just as he’s about to get close enough to finally see her face, she turns away in slow-mo.

He bolts awake realizing it was all a dream.

‘Cause every time I try to chase your voice
I end up getting lost and running in circles
And it’s never enough … I’m waiting….

[INTERIOR, DAY]

Back in colour, we see Ricky in his Hugh Hefner robe and ascot getting ready for the day trying to decide between 12 different red v-neck T-shirts. He picks one, tosses it in the dryer and turns it on high.2  Then he sits down to a salad bowl full of Cascadian Farms cereal … which he cradles with care.3

A little girl with a bow in her hair the size of Pluto runs up and hands him his laptop open to this Twitter page, proudly showing him her newfound typing skills. He laughs, tousles her hair, clicks “delete” a few times then stares off into the distance as the chorus swells….

Even though you’re gone I can hear your heart
It’s calling out my name like a flash in the dark
If this is just a dream I won’t give it back
I’ll find a way to make it last
One more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go

He pulls a “To Do” list out of his pocket, glances at it and heads out the door.

[EXT., WRONG SIDE OF TRACKS, DAY]

Cut to Ricky paying a random visit to a rundown house on a sad, lonely street inhabited only by widows and orphans. A sign that reads “No Solicitors!” hangs on the mailbox. Ricky takes out his sharpie and adds a happy face to it … and an autograph, out of sheer habit.

He knocks at the door but no one answers so he peeks through the side window. A crossing guard vest hangs by the door! He jumps back, ecstatic, just as a hybrid schoolbus roars out of the garage. But he still can’t see the driver’s face, only her long flowing hair fluttering out her window. Is it red? Is it blonde? Does she write songs on guitar?

Ricky races after the bus but can’t keep up. Just as he runs out of breath, the driver flings an envelope out her window and it lands at his stylishly clad feet.

Wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute
Wait, wait, wait, don’t go

The music swells to a heartbreaking crescendo. We zoom in on Ricky as he opens the envelope and reads her note … handwritten in calligraphy on 100% recycled ancient-forest-friendly A Fine Frenzy notepaper:

“You’re the sweetest, but I am so so sorry, we can’t be together — I’m a recovering anuptaphobic.4

Fireworks explode over Hong Kong.5

Even though you’re gone I can hear your heart
It’s calling out my name like a flash in the dark
If this is just a dream I won’t give it back
I’ll find a way to make it last
One more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go

[THE END]5

Footnotes:

1. Love Kate … and Ryan.
2. Come on, we know he does this!
3. … and this!
4. Word of the day.
5. Every Ricky Archuleta video needs to end with fireworks.
6. If you thought this was a real leak, I apologize. But if it turns out to be the real script, I take it all back. 🙂

Mumford and Sons memories

Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you,
It will set you free
Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design,
An alignment to cry,
Of my heart to see,
The beauty of love as it was made to be
~ “Sigh No More”

Don’t worry, you haven’t come in the wrong door! I just wanted to share the joy of seeing my first Mumford & Sons concert Tuesday night. I’m a fairly recent fan of the band (only first heard of them when they blew me away with their performance on the Grammys last year) so I missed the smaller shows they did here last year and was thrilled that they were returning to Canada this fall.

The boys: Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwayne, Country Winston (Pic: NME.com)

I was also thrilled to discover I could just be a “normal” fan again, lol. After the whole David tsunami hit three years ago, it crossed my mind that I wouldn’t be able to just enjoy bands/singers like I always had before, from a comfortable distance. But I’m happy to say, as much as I LOOOVE M&S’s music, I do not need to meet them, I don’t have a clue who their manager or “team” is (nor do I wish to know), I’ve never been to one of their fan sites and don’t feel compelled to start one. 🙂 And while I enjoy reading and watching interviews with them, I don’t keep hitting “replay” all day.

It was also cool to go to their amazing show, and observe the crowd WAY up in the rafter seats (because they sold-out the 15,800 capacity Air Canada Centre, with hundreds of people forming a rolling-wave ocean of a mosh pit down on the floor).

I will admit though that so many things reminded me of a David concert … how humble they are (mentioning repeatedly how honoured they felt that such a huge crowd came out to see them and how nervous and stressed it made them feel) … how passionately they throw every fibre of their beings into each performance … but most of all, how their music makes me feel: pure joy, while also sticking with me and making me think more deeply about things.

Unlike a David concert, they played a bunch of new songs for us, thanked us for our patience with them and explained that this is part of their process. They sort of “workshop” new material on the road live, work out the kinks, reshape songs until they feel they’re ready to record. Love, love, LOOOVE that concept … would it not be aMAZing if David tried that someday too? To do that, you need a patient, dedicated, supportive fan base who believes in you and feels as though they’re part of your “process” — sound familiar?

Two thumbs up all the way!!!!!! 🙂

P.S. Marcus Mumford introduced this Neil Young cover by saying that some of their favourite musicians are Canadian. 🙂

Label, schmabel: TCW interview

Great interview with The Civil Wars about the benefits and pitfalls (mostly benefits) of not being attached to a major label.

Love hearing what they have to say about making music they love, their way. Joy’s coquettish stage persona belies her sharp, savvy, clear-eyed view of the music industry and what it takes to succeed. And, perhaps more importantly, what constitutes success.

And I found John Paul’s emphasis on crafting songs you believe in very inspiring and refreshing.

Bet they could give certain unsigned artist pals some pretty good advice if they ever needed it …. 🙂

What do you guys think? Should David rush into signing with a label?

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind

David Archuleta, Foster Festival. Photo: MayumiJPN (click pic 4 more)

I had all these things I was going to say, I’m sure I did. Something about finally getting what people mean when they say a certain song reminds them of why they first became a David Archuleta fan. Was that it? I’m not sure. The only thing I’m sure of is I need to rush back and listen to this song again.

Believe it or not, I don’t feel that way about all of David’s songs. Some I even *gasp* skip over. *cough*SBL*cough* But then there are killers like this one. Yes, killers … pure grab-you-in-the-gut-and-keep-twisting devastation.

I’m not sure what makes them so lethal. To be honest, I don’t really want to overanalyze it. Takes away the magic somehow. And magic they are. This one certainly is. Makes you stop whatever you’re doing and get pulled right inside it.

And it’s not because his voice sounds pretty on it… lots of singers have very pleasant-sounding voices. It’s because of how it makes you feel. Filled with joy, sorrow, longing. But mostly, alive. But you guys know all that only too well.

And, frankly, it sounded as though David was struggling a little on some of the other songs in the show (probably because of the dehydrating long trip and time change), but it seemed to make this one even more poignant.

When David tells interviewers he wants to find his “sound” I can’t help but think he was born with his sound, this sound. This soulful sound.

I need to go back and listen a.g.a.i.n. Does that make me crazy? Probably.

P.S. Here’s an mp3 from the lovely jenleighbarry in case you’re crazy for Crazy too. 🙂

P.P.S. VORTEX ALEEERRRRTTT!!!!! HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL!!!!! THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS is what I’m talkin’ aboutttt!!!!!!! Have been waiting for this WFM vid, looooove this!!!!!!
