[EXT., HONG KONG STREET, NIGHT]
The moon glows above a fancy schmancy Hong Kong hotel that serves cheap breakfasts. The camera pans up to the top floor.
[INT. SWANKY HOTEL SUITE, NIGHT]
We zoom in through a penthouse window where we find a sleeping Ricky Archuleta, tossing and turning as he clutches a blind, battered blue Totoro. We hear a much-cheered-by-fans lower register start to sing:
I can’t sleep, I’m feeling wide awake
Tonight is taking its time
How much more before the morning breaks
And I can leave it far behind?
[INT., SOLD-OUT CONCERT ARENA]
The scene dissolves into a dream sequence. Ricky’s on stage in front of a cheering crowd, but instead of his band, he’s jamming with the Peanuts gang and singing ….
‘Cause every time I try to close my eyes
I only end up seeing memories of you
And it’s never enough
I’m waiting
Ricky’s not-quite-green-not-quite-brown-more-like-amber eyes light up as he spots someone in the audience. She’s wearing a crossing guard vest. He stops dancing with Lucy and walks to the edge of the stage to reach out his hand. But as he gets closer, she turns her head. Her long hair twirls in slow motion as she walks away so he can’t see her face. He leaps off the stage and crowd surfs toward her but she’s just out of reach.
Even though you’re gone I can hear your heart
It’s calling out my name like a flash in the dark
If this is just a dream I won’t give it back
I’ll find a way to make it last
One more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute, wait, wait, wait, don’t go
[INT., BEDROOM, DAWN]
Ricky wakes suddenly, sits up and grabs his Dr. Seuss alarm clock. But the face has no hands so he tosses it into the fireplace and pulls the blanket over his head.
[INT., EMPTY CONCERT HALL]
We dissolve to black and white where K. Dangerous is teaching Ricky to play the drums. Ricky keeps getting distracted by non-stop texts until K. finally rolls her eyes, throws down her drumsticks and stomps offstage … to a waiting Ryan Gosling.1
One text in particular causes Ricky to leap from the drum kit and run outside.
I am keeping every word you said
But how much longer can I hold on
‘Cause whispers echoing until they fade
Remind me that you’re already gone
[EXT., BUSY STREET, SUNSET]
Ricky spots an unattended Google Earth Tricycle, leaps into the driver’s seat and cruises the streets of Hong Kong as the sun sets. As it grows dark, he slows his pedalling and begins to give up hope. And then … in the distance … the moonlight catches a flicker of something … oh sweet festive angel wings, could it be??? Yes!!!! He spots the fluorescent X on the crossing guard vest! The camera follows Ricky as he pedals furiously to meet her walking towards him. Just as he’s about to get close enough to finally see her face, she turns away in slow-mo.
He bolts awake realizing it was all a dream.
‘Cause every time I try to chase your voice
I end up getting lost and running in circles
And it’s never enough … I’m waiting….
[INTERIOR, DAY]
Back in colour, we see Ricky in his Hugh Hefner robe and ascot getting ready for the day trying to decide between 12 different red v-neck T-shirts. He picks one, tosses it in the dryer and turns it on high.2 Then he sits down to a salad bowl full of Cascadian Farms cereal … which he cradles with care.3
A little girl with a bow in her hair the size of Pluto runs up and hands him his laptop open to this Twitter page, proudly showing him her newfound typing skills. He laughs, tousles her hair, clicks “delete” a few times then stares off into the distance as the chorus swells….

He pulls a “To Do” list out of his pocket, glances at it and heads out the door.
[EXT., WRONG SIDE OF TRACKS, DAY]
Cut to Ricky paying a random visit to a rundown house on a sad, lonely street inhabited only by widows and orphans. A sign that reads “No Solicitors!” hangs on the mailbox. Ricky takes out his sharpie and adds a happy face to it … and an autograph, out of sheer habit.
He knocks at the door but no one answers so he peeks through the side window. A crossing guard vest hangs by the door! He jumps back, ecstatic, just as a hybrid schoolbus roars out of the garage. But he still can’t see the driver’s face, only her long flowing hair fluttering out her window. Is it red? Is it blonde? Does she write songs on guitar?
Ricky races after the bus but can’t keep up. Just as he runs out of breath, the driver flings an envelope out her window and it lands at his stylishly clad feet.
Wait, wait, wait, don’t go
Just one more minute
Wait, wait, wait, don’t go
The music swells to a heartbreaking crescendo. We zoom in on Ricky as he opens the envelope and reads her note … handwritten in calligraphy on 100% recycled ancient-forest-friendly A Fine Frenzy notepaper:
“You’re the sweetest, but I am so so sorry, we can’t be together — I’m a recovering anuptaphobic.4 “
Fireworks explode over Hong Kong.5
Even though you’re gone I can hear your heart
