‘Ann Arbor: My first David Archuleta concert’ revisited

I can’t believe it’s been four years since the amazing Ann Arbor concert. To celebrate — and to wish all our American cousins a Happy Thanksgiving! — I’m reposting stenocruiser’s lovely account of her very first David Archuleta concert (hope you don’t mind, steno!). Enjoy!

*************************

Hill Auditorium designed for glorious sound … designed with David in mind?

It is not yet daybreak on a rainy morning as my daughter, Cathy, and I head away from Hamilton to the highways – 403 to 401 to 402 to the border.  We have travelled this route over several years to visit my son, Gary, in the Sarnia area to attend family events, happy occasions.   Gary has made the trip back and forth for the same several years but more recent ones were not the pleasant kind – three years ago it was for my husband’s (his Dad’s) funeral.  Four months after that very sad time Gary was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and his visits to and from Hamilton almost weekly were for treatment.  In late summer this year his trips ceased as he entered into palliative care in his own home.

Our family then travelled those roads constantly to be there for Gary and his wonderful wife.  Our last trip was for his funeral just this past September.   Please know that this preamble is meant simply to explain the mixed emotions – sadness, loss, grief and happiness, anticipation, excitement – that we are experiencing in travelling these “400” roads again.

We are on our way to Ann Arbor to see and hear David Archuleta, that most amazing young man whose beautiful voice, positive messages and faith have been sources of comfort to me over the past couple of years.  Now I will see him in a live performance for the very first time!

The rain has stopped and we approach the Bluewater Bridge where we will cross into Michigan.  We have arrived early as we expect there will be long lines due to Black Friday traffic.  Instead we find it is clear sailing and we are over the bridge and into Michigan in minutes.  Ah, this is definitely the start of all good things.  Now we are travelling different highways, traffic is light, GPS is our friend.  We are heading for Destination David, new memories and happy times.

We have time to shop so off to Target.  We pick up a few gifts – another good thing today.  Time to check into our hotel and then head out for Panera to perhaps meet up with some other fans.  I am shy and am hesitant to approach people to see if they are part of the David fan group so I don’t get to see everybody.  I find out later they are all downstairs and I don’t know there is a downstairs.  I meet TOfan, Refnaf and angelfanofDA(? oh, I’m not sure) in the washroom line.  After I ask if they are going to see David, they say yes and ask where I’m from and then they know who I am so that was fun.   TOfan gave me a David keychain – so very kind.  We wave Canadian flags at each other before the concert starts.

We go to ‘will call’ to get our tickets, wait for inside doors to open and then are escorted to our seventh row seats.  Gradually the musicians come on stage and begin their warm-ups.   An executive of the symphony speaks and then the Disney Radio person says a few words.  The symphony plays a medley of Christmas songs.   And we wait.  Oh, I am impatient but I know the wait will be more than worth it.

Credit: anoonan17/ArchuletaAvenue

David Archuleta is introduced and he strides out, a smile on his face and a wave to the audience.  He is small in stature but quickly becomes a giant on the stage.  It is impossible to take one’s eyes off him.  He actually does glow, yes he does.   No spotlight required.  Then he starts to sing, his voice soaring.  How is it possible for anyone to be that perfect?

The piano is out of my line of sight it being behind a bank of musicians on my side, so I’m unable to see David’s fingers flying over the keys on “1000 Miles.”  So I watch the musicians, their instruments at rest.  Their eyes are all on David; a couple of lady violinists crane their necks to see his performance; the maestro simply stands with arms folded, eyes on David, and smiles in approval and obvious admiration.

Oh my, the glorious symphony – glorious David deserves this glorious accompaniment.  This is simply beyond special.  Every song, every carol, each so heartfelt.  Standing ovations, so deserved.  I have to clutch my hands together under my chin to keep from shaking but tears do fall.  No need for me to comment on each perfectly sung song as others have already done that so well.  After all, how many more superlative adjectives are there?

After the concert, I wait outside for my daughter who is several steps behind me in the crowd.  I watch as people come through the doors and I see so many smiles in the aftermath of such a special performance.   David has made everyone feel so good.

First time seeing David live and it just happens to be at this magical concert. This is indeed an evening to remember.   My daughter and I both enjoyed it so very much.  How fortunate and blessed I am to be here to experience it.  It has meant the world to me.  Thank you, David.

P.S. Edit: Stealth Fields of Gold & WCIT & The Riddle youTubes … audio is incredible. (Thanks ZanessaEfgens and emilyluvsarchie!). Underrated @DavidArchie Christmas songs

I haven’t listened to CFTH yet this year. Instead, I’ve been listening to these for some reason.

Here, he mostly sings harmony, but oh what gorgeous harmony it is. (I’m sorry Ms. Lopez, I’m sure you’re a lovely person but I get to the end of this song and I can’t remember even one of your notes. You were singing too, right?)

This one’s become one of my favourites… like frequently on repeat… it’s hypnotic or something, I swear.

And this gem…

Uncle @DavidArchie Survival Guide (not really)

Are you ready for Uncle David?

No, seriously, are you ready???

As Batya put it so well:

I feel it is my public duty to make sure everyone is fully prepared for the onslaught of cuteness and second-generation awwchuletaness that we are about to be subjected to.

This is not to be taken lightly, people. Come Spring 2014, we will be a quivering mass of two-year-drought neediness. Couple that with glimpses — or *gasp* vlogs! — of David holding little Violeta and, well, just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

So here’s an Uncle Archie primer designed to prepare you for the inevitable so you’ll be moderately able to function when Tío starts spamming us with Cuteness Overload baby pics.

First, a basic tolerance test. Do you find this cute?

tumblr_mok59115211r3gb3zo1_250

If you answered yes, keep going.

If you answered no, hook up with Dorothy and the Scarecrow, ’cause you need a heart, my friend.

Uncle Archie Survival Guide Step 1:

Watch this until you no longer hold out your hands the same time D’Arch does. (Nothing he hates more than when someone fumbles a baby.)

Here it is again in slo-mo in case you need more practice…

x2_805758f

Step 2:

Repeat after me: “This is only mildly adorable. This is only mildly adorable.”

ella-o
If you inadvertently made a whimpering sound, go back to Step 1.

Step 3:

Try to focus on the kid … the short one… the REALLY short one…

backstage

I said focus!!! I see you glancing to the left then back over to the right!!!!!

Step 4:

Stare at this until it becomes obvious that it was all staged in an act of shameless self-promotion for the row of Glad Christmas Tidings on display.

david-archuleta-and-a-baby

(If you immediately thought, “What GCT display?” I really don’t think I can help you.)

Step 4:

Always remember that David is merciless in his cute photo ops. He may pull something totally unexpected so you best be ready for anything, even this:

zoo-a-palooza-21As soon as he gets home, he’ll likely be working on his Eagle Scout babysitting badge, so steel yourself NOW!

Step 4:

Also be prepared for all manner of distractions, in addition to his little niece … like beanies:

Geckos…

beware them all!

Step 5:

If the David-holding-baby pics get too much for you, take a break, take a walk, watch a Chuckie movie, or just flip back through old pre-Uncle pics, like this one:

“Wait… Where is her other hand?”

You can thank me later.

The story of Landfill Harmonic

This isn’t directly related to David but it is all about the power of music to change lives, save lives.

I saw a profile of this music program on 60 Minutes tonight and cried my way through the whole thing. It was about a town in Paraguay built around a landfill — a town where one music teacher started teaching kids to play violins, cellos, flutes — all made from the garbage found in the landfill.

I couldn’t figure out a way to embed the 60 Minutes segment (the link is here), but this is a preview of a feature documentary that’s being made about this beautiful story. Please watch, you’ll be glad you did.

Why creative people sometimes make no sense

We’re all creative people in one way or another, I do believe that. But of course David in particular came to mind when I read this article. 🙂 Would you guys agree?

*************

Why Creative People Sometimes Make No Sense

Posted by Matthew in for us

I’ve been having an insightful shuffle through Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book Creativity: The Work and Lives of 91 Eminent People. Mihaly is a seminal professor of Psychology and Management, and is the Founding Co-Director of the Quality of Life Research Center at Claremont. He writes:

“I have devoted 30 years of research to how creative people live and work, to make more understandable the mysterious process by which they come up with new ideas and new things. If I had to express in one word what makes their personalities different from others, it’s complexity. They show tendencies of thought and action that in most people are segregated. They contain contradictory extremes; instead of being an individual, each of them is a multitude.”

Nine out of the ten people in me strongly agree with that statement. As someone paid to be creative, I sometimes feel kaleidoscopic in my views or opinions, and that “multitude” of expressions sometimes confuses those around me. Why does that happen? My thoughts make cohesive sense to me, yet others sometimes feel that I am contradicting myself or switching positions. What is wrong with me?

Mihaly describes 9 contradictory traits that are frequently present in creative people:

01

Most creative people have a great deal of physical energy, but are often quiet and at rest. They can work long hours at great concentration.

02

Most creative people tend to be smart and naive at the same time. “It involves fluency, or the ability to generate a great quantity of ideas; flexibility, or the ability to switch from one perspective to another; and originality in picking unusual associations of ideas. These are the dimensions of thinking that most creativity tests measure, and that most creativity workshops try to enhance.”

03

Most creative people combine both playfulness and productivity, which can sometimes mean both responsibility and irresponsibility. “Despite the carefree air that many creative people affect, most of them work late into the night and persist when less driven individuals would not.” Usually this perseverance occurs at the expense of other responsibilities, or other people.

04

Most creative people alternate fluently between imagination and fantasy, and a rooted sense of reality. In both art and science, movement forward involves a leap of imagination, a leap into a world that is different from our present. Interestingly, this visionary imagination works in conjunction with a hyperawareness of reality. Attention to real details allows a creative person to imagine ways to improve them.

05

Most creative people tend to be both introverted and extroverted. Many people tend toward one extreme or the other, but highly creative people are a balance of both simultaneously.

06

Most creative people are genuinely humble and display a strong sense of pride at the same time.

07

Most creative people are both rebellious and conservative. “It is impossible to be creative without having first internalized an area of culture. So it’s difficult to see how a person can be creative without being both traditional and conservative and at the same time rebellious and iconoclastic.”

08

Most creative people are very passionate about their work, but remain extremely objective about it as well. They are able to admit when something they have made is not very good.

09

Most creative people’s openness and sensitivity exposes them to a large amount of suffering and pain, but joy and life in the midst of that suffering. “Perhaps the most important quality, the one that is most consistently present in all creative individuals, is the ability to enjoy the process of creation for its own sake. Without this trait, poets would give up striving for perfection and would write commercial jingles, economists would work for banks where they would earn at least twice as much as they do at universities, and physicists would stop doing basic research and join industrial laboratories where the conditions are better and the expectations more predictable.”

Sometimes what appears to be a contradiction on the surface is actually a harmony in disguise. My problem has been primarily one of communication. I am learning to let people know what I am thinking and why, and explaining myself in a way that helps them understand why I am discussing multiple perspectives instead of just cleaning stating my own. At first it might not make sense, but give me/us long enough, and it will.

Random @DavidArchie rant (not really, but sort of)

"You're getting sleepy, very sleeeepy...."

“You’re getting sleepy, very sleeeepy….”

So, excuse me, but no #throwbackthursday crumb thrown our way this week???? No blurry reject from the camera trash bin that could be extracted for us to retweet across the universe? No DNA molecule breakdown from a discarded single hair from the sainted head of The Archuleta??

I kid of course. We’ve already mapped out our own version of his DNA molecules.

Here I thought I was the last person to be super needy (well, not the last person, but the last group of 5,000 maybe). And yet I anxiously checked Twitter Thursday night, figuring my phone alerts were broken or something.

And then, when there was no new tweets on David’s faux timeline I had my own version of a tantrum (which basically consists of me sighing loudly and sort of huffing… I may have also pouted).

Archuleta, what have you reduced me to??? (That was a rhetorical question btw.)

I am better than this. I have more dignity than this. I have better things to do than wait around on a Thursday for some random shot of David backstage at The Baub Show. (I’d post a link but I’m still suffering post-traumatic stress from that whole “interview.”)

But of course if such a shot were posted I would smile like I’d just been given my allowance for the week.

Oh David.

Maybe you need to stay away longer.

KIDDDDDDDDDDDINNNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!

Please put away those torches and pitchforks!!!!!

This is how out of touch I am with non-David reality. Some peeps on my FB timeline posted childhood pics of themselves with the “Throwback Thursday” tag and I did a double-take. “What?… that’s not just for David pictures??” Mind. Blown.

Plus that Heaven video kind of spoiled things for me. Once you get a shot of pure David vocals it’s hard to go back to the lite stuff like Manila candids.

I’ll get over myself now. Have a lovely, lovely weekend.

David Archuleta vlogs are love

I stumbled across this old post and it made me wistful and hopeful and in a good place … I think you guys know what I mean… what’s your favourite David vlog?

*************

I’m on vacation but HAD to check in and watch David’s vlog again. I think it’s one of my favourites. Here’s why:

Spooky dark background. Reminds me he does these on the fly, no set designer or pre-planning. If there happens to be dark lighting or a “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall” or weird buzzing noise or dressing room toilet in the background, no matter.

His YouTube “More info” and tags:

theofficialarchuleta — May 01, 2010 — I apologize for the lighting. Had a good week of writing! I have the weekend off in LA so I’ll be spending time with some friends. Back to work on Monday. Took a cab drive which was pretty expensive, left my suitcase in the trunk, and took the Metro for my first time to go back. Fun week 🙂

Why do I enjoy these so much? To me, they’re another little window into the fascinating, quirky Escher-drawing workings of David’s creative mind.

How excited he is for us to hear his new music. It occurred to me that that’s not something he can share the same way with his inner circle, because he probably wouldn’t want to sound boastful or self-absorbed … but that now he knows and understands how much we are cheering him on and want to share and celebrate in each new song … heck, each new anything!

His penchant for penny-pinching. This is on the list because it’s like the one thing about him that isn’t perfect, which in itself makes him more perfect! Cracks me up to no end.

David the commuter. Getting his $1.25 ticket1 and hopping the train to work? How cool is that? I picture him carrying a travel mug filled with some almond milk smoothie, a copy of Billboard tucked under one arm.

He has the weekend off to hang with friends. 🙂

Cinco de Mayo2 Man. I don’t know a lot about the holiday, but I was fortunate enough to be in Mexico for it one year and I know one important thing … it’s FUUUNNNN!  And, apparently Los Angeles has the largest Cinco de Mayo street fair in the world, so he is in for BIG fun! Take a mid-week day off, David, you so deserve it!!!

So, which vlog is your all-time fave?

1. Hey, wait a minute, our subway costs twice that????

P.S.
How have I never seen this??? #fanfail

I remember when….

david-archuleta-in-recording-studio-recording-rainbow-for-forevermore-opm-cr-kari… I remember, I remember when I lost my mind

There was something so pleasant about that place

Even your emotions had an echo

In so much space

And when you’re out there

Without care

Yeah, I was out of touch

But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough

I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?

Does that make me crazy?

Does that make me crazy?

Probably

And I hope that you are having the time of your life

But think twice, that’s my only advice

Come now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?

Ha ha ha bless your soul

You really think you’re in control

Well, I think you’re crazy

I think you’re crazy

I think you’re crazy

Just like me

Is @DavidArchie the greatest American Idol contestant of all time?

The lovely Ms. Betsy alerted me to this 2008 Vulture post (always loved Vulture’s love for D.) and I had to repost… what do you guys think about it?

Vulture1Vulture2.

.

2tumblr_m5j6sldozp1qlof70o2_250

Has there ever in American Idol‘s history been a better contestant than David Archuleta? It’s not just that he’s the most vocally gifted of this year’s finalists; it’s also that — by nature, design, or mind-blowingly aggressive stage parenting — he embodies more winning characteristics than virtually any other hopeful in the show’s previous six seasons. Sure, his performance last night may have been less than perfect, but we think he’s still a lock for the win. Archuleta almost seems to be built from all the best spare parts of lesser Idols. Is he human? We’re not sure! Can anything stand between him and victory? Probably not. Five reasons why:

1. He’s the cute one and the talented one.
On every season of American Idol there’s one adorable, clean-cut contestant whose prepubescent fan base and popularity among old people practically guarantees him a place in the top five, regardless of how he sings (see John Stevens, Anthony Federov, Kevin Covais, and Sanjaya). This year it’s David Archuleta. At the same time, there’s always one steely-eyed professional whose laser-precise singing ability and natural stage presence typically make him or (usually) her a lock to win, even if she’s as charismatic as a head cold (previously Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jordin Sparks). This contestant, too, is David Archuleta. Never before in the history of the show have these two been the same person, and with both huge blocs of fans dialing his 800 number, his spot in the finals is more or less assured.

2. He’s a guy without a gimmick.
In general, male contestants on Idol have had a problem with mass appeal — which is why almost all the recent successful ones have defined their base early, then played to it relentlessly. Chris Daughtry won over modern-rock-radio fans by singing all his songs like Live’s Ed Kowalczyk; Taylor Hicks and Bo Bice stuck to dad rock; Blake Lewis bravely added mouth percussion to songs in which mouth percussion clearly had no business (like this one), in spite of what the beat-box-hating majority might think. All four required a gimmick, while female finalists Kelly Clarkson and Jordan Sparks could coast to victory on just being the best singer.

But Archuleta has no shtick and he’s still this season’s undisputed front-runner (Paula Abdul told him as much last night, even after he forgot his lyrics). His huge talent lets him be bland (favorite drink: water) and run a national campaign. With no apparent allegiances to any particular genre, and — even more important — no apparent personality, he’s in minimal danger of turning anyone off. As more singers are eliminated, this will help him pick up more of their fans than any of his nichier competition.

3. He’s got a great sob story.
Not since the Book of Job has God been so needlessly cruel as he’s been to this year’s crop of AI finalists. Apart from the two singers afflicted with male-pattern baldness, two female contestants lost their fathers in the days before Hollywood week, and one girl was even hit by a truck (Amanda Overmeyer, and she seems to be okay).

But a few years ago, David Archuleta suffered a paralyzed vocal cord, which, for a short time, prevented him singing; eventually, he made a full recovery without surgery. Sure, it’s not as terrible as losing a parent, or as flashy as being run down by an eighteen-wheeler, but it’s got a happy ending, it’s nonexploitative, and it doesn’t make you feel bad. Most important, it gives him a story that local newspapers, network early shows, and Fox producers themselves can parrot to make him seem interesting. Really, it’s the perfect Idol sob story.

4. He’s pacing himself.
Because Archuleta is the earliest-emerging front-runner in American Idol history, a few have already accused him of peaking too soon. Still, we think his best moments are in front of him. In these early rounds, he’s been smart to offset his abilities by picking some of the worst songs of any finalist ever. During his auditions, we heard him sing John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change” and Bryan Adams’s “Heaven.” Last week, he sang an undeniably excellent version of Phil Collins’s atrocious “Another Day in Paradise.” The judges didn’t love it, but that probably had less to do with Archuleta’s singing than the fact that Phil Collins writes terrible music. Last night he finally attempted a good song, the Stevie Wonder version of “We Can Work It Out,” but still hamstrung himself by not knowing all the words. Still, the ones he sang sounded terrific and suggested that when he finally cuts loose on a great song, he’ll be unstoppable.

5. He was born to do this.

At 17, Archuleta is the first-ever top-twelve finalist born in the nineties. He’s spent more of his life absorbing the phenomenon of AI than any other contestant who’s ever appeared on it. For probably as long as he can remember, it’s been the dominant star-making force behind many of pop music’s biggest success stories (plus Taylor Hicks).

The bio on his now-defunct official Website (archived here), cites the AI‘s premiere as a turning point in his life. When Archuleta was 10, an appearance on The Jenny Jones Show got him a meeting with failed contestant AJ Gil, who introduced him to the rest of season one’s top ten. (In the creepy YouTube clip above, he sings “And I Am Telling You” for Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini in the lobby of their hotel.) Since he wasn’t yet old enough to audition for Idol (you have to be 16), Archuleta bided his time by winning lesser reality competition shows, like CBS’ Arsenio-hosted Star Search reboot, on which he took top honors in the Junior Vocalist category in 2003. On his own, he recorded a Christmas album and a few cover songs (including Kelly Clarkson’s single “A Moment Like This”), but apparently never had much interest in music apart from the standard Top 40 stuff performed on Idol, or any recording contract besides the one with RCA he’ll probably get after winning the show. In other words, he’s the first contestant for whom AI defines the musical universe. For him, it’s not just a means to an end … it is the end.

P.S.

(And “On his own, he recorded a Christmas album” ???? where? when? how did I miss this??? and this: “a few cover songs (including Kelly Clarkson’s single “A Moment Like This”)??? And here’s Fallin‘)
