Checking in with Jason Castro

22176_1243097930398_1617852195_618253_8223182_n1wow, I had been wondering recently about Jason Castro and how his fans felt about his move to Christian music and then just saw this article today.

Jason, Brooke and David were my three AI7 faves and I always kind of hoped they’d tour together at some point. And I remember just after Idol, Jason saying that David reminded him of his younger self.

Anywayyyy, found this interview with him interesting. So great to see him so happy and still touring and making music.

Screen shot 2014-06-18 at 9.52.13 PMDALLAS — He may not have taken the crown, but fans of “American Idol” still remember former contestant Jason Castro for his dreadlocks and carefree sound. He scored big on the show, making it all the way to the top four.

After leaving Idol in 2008, Castro quickly scored a No. 1 international hit. Then he disappeared from the charts and the pop music scene, leaving fans with questions: What happened? Why the switch to Christian music?

And perhaps the biggest question of all: What’s up with the haircut?

“Well, I felt like it was time for a change. Once I cut it I’m like, ‘Oh, this is what it feels like to run your fingers through your hair,'” Castro laughed.

But that hair cut wasn’t the only big change for the 27-year-old.

Even with all the fans and fame, loneliness began to take a toll. Although Castro grew up in church, the separation from family developed into a growing separation from God. He also struggled physically with exhaustion.

A New Sound

Then came the faith questions.

“It started to feel a little meaningless. Why am I doing this? To make a name for myself? To make some money? I started to really have a longing to have more God in my life,” Castro said.

“I struggled to stay close to God on the road. I wanted more God in my life and as a part of that I wanted more God in my music,” he continued.

“I got to this point where I realized God doesn’t want me to do anything on my own. He wants me to give it all to Him and trust Him with everything. And you know it really changed everything for me to kind of let go of everything and realize that God can take care of it,” Castro reflected.

Around the same time Castro became involved with the I Am Second campaign, a popular ministry where Christian celebrities share their personal stories. He found new success with the release of his first Christian album, Only a Mountain.

Today Castro tours with some of the biggest names in Christian music such as Matthew West, Toby Mac, and The Sidewalk Prophets.

Renewed Purpose

But perhaps his greatest accomplishment is as husband and father.

“She really changed everything,” Castro said of his 2-year-old daughter Madeline. “I didn’t know she would change it. More than anything I want to be a part of her life and I want her to know her daddy loves her more than just a song.”

This isn’t a story about a young man going to Hollywood and getting lost in the glitz and glamour. Instead, Castro is using Hollywood to spread the love of God around the globe.

Castro hasn’t abandoned his American Idol past. Rather, he uses the platform to give back to others.

He spends much of his time overseas working as spokesperson for the charities Malaria No More and helping with Roma Boots, a nonprofit providing boots to children in need.

“When I see these kids in need I have a deeper connection because I look at them and I see my daughter,” Castro told CBN News.

“I remember on the trip there was one kid that was like the same size as my daughter and he had on a little sweatshirt, no pants,” he said. “We gave him some rain boots. Now he has some shoes.”

Castro recently led a benefit concert for Young Life Capernaum, a group that specializes in meeting the social, physical, and spiritual needs of young people with special needs.

And when not on tour, he’s singing with his talented siblings. His brother Michael and sister Jackie have a strong following with solo careers of their own.

So is there a chance for a Castro family album? We’ll have to wait and see.

As for the future Castro said,” I don’t know what the future holds for Jason, but there will always be music.”

@DavidArchie’s got sole: Shoe tweet deconstruction

Yes, Angelica 🙂 still a little too not over two … TWO … shoe pics posted by David… somebody pinch me! LOL

But I believe the longer Instagram message that went along with it needs a full doctoral thesis to parse the subtext… since I am currently working on my M.A. (Masters of Archieology), I will give it a go.

Here are my footnotes (get it? *snort*)

shoesfootnotes.

1. He said “took” not “I gave away” or “I decided to share” but they “took” … I’m picturing two guys in balaclavas trying on a bajillion scarves and skinny jeans.

2. “Just about all of my clothes” — not just a T-shirt here or a Ford Day jacket there, but JUST ABOUT ALL OF MY CLOTHES!!! What the heck did they think he was going to wear when he got home, more suits and ties?

3. “while I was gone” — I imagine it went something like this?

Friend: “pssst, he’s in the car, let’s MOVE!”
Brother-in-law: “But they’re still idling, he could’ve forgotten something and run back in!”
Friend: “No time, they’re running late… you take the closet, I’ll take the bureau.”
Brother-in-law: “No, I’ll take the bureau, it’s got his Mr. Rogers T-shirt.”
Friend: “Bro, he took that one with him.”
Brother-in-law: “Dang him, SO selfish!”
Friend: “I know right!”
Brother-in-law: “Dibs on the cool potato sack cowl-neck thingie.”
Friend: “Um, ya, you can have that one.”

4. “(I let them)” — added only so none of us would call the police for him.

5. “I have run out of stuff to wear” — aha, the mystery of Belt-Gate is solved!

6. “Luckily” — as if this magic suitcase appeared out of nowhere full of emergency items for Mr. Wardrobe-challenged.

7. “There was a suitcase of things from the Philippines” — once again, Philippines and Josh Bradley to the rescue!

8. “Like these Bench shoes” — that will work really well come winter.

9 & 10 “Thanks @kariontour for keeping the suitcase safe!  — why do I picture Kari holding a fiery torch in one hand and a machete in the other, arms outstretched defending the little suitcase against a pack of wolves.

Or a bomb going off and Kari flinging her body over the suitcase so not one cute polo shirt got singed!

Or a tornado whirling through Apopka and Kari flinging the suitcase down the root cellar, jumping in with it and slamming the trap door shut just in time!

Or maybe just dusting it now and then.

11. “thanks #Bench” — well played, Archuleta, well played. (and look at you there using hashtags like you invented them)

12. “guess I’ll have to stop being stubborn” — what, you, David, stubborn? Had no idea.

13. “Buy more clothes eventually though” — steer clear of men’s capris.

14. I’m glad I’m not the only one who takes pictures of my shoes!

What do you guys think? Reading too much into this? 🙂

p.s.

So now we have a barely-there-hair morning person who likes watching sports, being a sassypants and live tweeting? WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OUR D’ARCH??!!!

@DavidArchie gems I can’t believe I forgot about

Over six years, David really has given us SO much music that sometimes I totally forget about favourites I’ve had, faves like:

Think of Me, Today Show: The studio version makes me burst into tears, it’s soooo beautiful, and I LOVE this live version, especially the ending, which he changes up, again.

Works For Me, Fox & Friends: And A++ for the hair, just sayin’

She’s Not Chew… can still totally hear this on radio:

GBA, Constitution Fair: Possibly the only U.S. patriotic song I’ll ever have on my iPod:

The Riddle, Billboard Live: When David starts playing the piano at the beginning I have a hard time comprehending that that’s really him playing for some reason, lol…

MH, York, PA: How could I forget my original fave from the little red album??? And the ending here, whoahhhh!

Hey Soul Sister: And I totally forgot about this gem!

How about you guys, what are your forgotten faves?

My @DavidArchie MoTab meltdown (really)

Yes, I admit when I read this I immediately thought:

Yes!tumblr_mvxaqdPe9g1rnq0vfo1_250
IT HAS TO BE DAVID, ALL SIGNS POINT TO DAAAAVIDDDD!!!!!

tumblr_miic2yYRq41r9dhlfo1_250

Yes, David, they did….

But then I pulled myself together and Refnaf and I agreed we’d play it cool and just go with the flow:

babies_tumblr_mvxb66jNCM1rnq0vfo1_400.

But when I read that last year’s concert included NEW MUSIC, I just had to:

CB_tumblr_mvxbr2Vqa41rnq0vfo1_500.

ya know what I’m sayin’?

To say I stalked MoTab’s twitter feed is putting it mildly, so when I saw this:

At first I was like, “WHO?????” but when it sunk in, I was like…..

cupboards_tumblr_inline_mvpegxegX81rxjym8combined with a touch of…..

Cat Box.

My final hope is that David’s planning to pull something like ….

pingpong_l-249485

I choose to believe they did ask him but sasschuleta was too busy playing Super Mario and writing songs and playing Pokemon and writing songs and making pizza and writing songs and looking up inspirational quotes and writing songs and peeing his pants laughing on dates and writing songs.

What do you guys think???

True confessions: My Top 25 Most Played Songs

k, so I often play this playlist because, well, since they are my top-25 most played songs, odds are, I like listening to them. (Can you spot the one thing that’s not like the other? 🙂 )

Here goes:

This is the only song from Forevermore on my Top 25… it was not my favourite in the beginning but the more I heard it, the more I had to listen to it… again … and again. There’s just such a cool groove to it. And his voice sounds extra chocolatey or something in it… and when he gets to the “I can’t stop don’t know how to stahhhhhp thinking of yoOuOuoOOuuUuuUUU” *DEADDD*. Check it out, you’ll see. 🙂

Love Don’t Hate

Waiting on the World to Change (with Jeff LeBlanc)

Stomping the Roses (live, Myrtle Beach)

Silent Night, Chile

The Other Side of Down (live, Myrtle Beach)

What really happens when you start over….

Here’s an interesting blog post about “starting over” I came across and wanted to share. How about you guys … what do you think is the hardest part about starting over?

Screen shot 2014-05-27 at 9.52.34 PM

What Really Happens When You Start Over
by Jeff Goins

Nobody likes starting over. At least, I don’t know anyone who does. But sometimes life forces you to reboot, whether you want to or not.

Sure, there are those rare, crazy ones who love the thrill of a new venture. But if you’ve spent any time building anything, you know that uneasy feeling in your stomach when you have to begin again. It’s hard.

This is why so many people stay in jobs they hate or keep going back to the same old, unhealthy addictions that leave them broken. It’s easier that way.

But there’s something beautiful about starting over, something liberating about beginning again. And I’d like to encourage you consider a fresh start in something this week.

Back to zero?

I just had a conversation with someone who is having to start something over. She’s worried that it means going back to zero. Not true.

When you start something new, you’re not really beginning completely fresh. Your past experiences, failures, and successes have all taught you something. More than you realize. And knowing what you know now means you aren’t starting over. You’re just beginning again.

That’s what I learned with this blog, which was the result of quitting another blog I had been writing on for four and a half years. I wasn’t quitting and going back to the drawing board. Instead, I was building on a foundation.

I had spent years writing online with few people paying attention. When I started over, I feared I might be wasting my time. But I was wrong.

All those years, I was practicing. Preparing. Waiting for my big moment. Maybe you are, too.

Do something new, now

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Do you remember what it felt like? It was probably a little fun, possibly even thrilling. I bet it required some hard work, too.

Maybe it’s time to do that again. To take a risk. To break a rule. To start.

If you don’t know where to begin, you should read Seth Godin’s book Poke the Box, which is one of the best books I’ve read on the subject of starting things. …

Maybe you’re in a season in which you feel like what you’re doing is all for naught, that you’re doing all this work and nobody’s paying attention. But maybe that’s not the whole story.

Maybe you’re being prepared for a season that hasn’t come yet. If that’s the case, may I encourage you to do one thing?

Show up.

Even when the fruit isn’t there… show up.

Even when the critics tell you to quit… show up.

Even when you’re tired and tempted to throw in the towel… show up.

If this is a time of preparation for you (and not a time to start), do the work. Show up. Because what you are doing is sowing — that’s planting seeds, for you non-farmer folk — and though you may not reap them for some time, the work you’re doing is not pointless.

Stay the course, be brave, and your season will come.

The real story behind the @DavidArchie Matt Clayton photo shoot (not really)

Hey guys, it’s David here.

Instead of my usual video blog I thought I’d change things up and show you some of my hair care tips.

Don’t worry, easy stuff you can try at home. If you live near the beach. And have a stylist. And look like me. heh heh heh

1ADavid-11-2

Step 1: Get yourself a really big red ball and rub it on the top of your head. The static gives you volume… and it feels cool.

Ball 1

Wait, did someone say this was Miley’s??

Ball2David-11-2

Step 2: Sit out in the sun to get some highlights… and a farmer’s tan.

sunstreaks

Step 3: Hang out in a high wind and try not to fall asleep.

David-11-3

Step 4: Go spear fishing…. nothing to do with hair styling, I’m just hungry.

spearfishing

Drats, the spear fishing was not a good idea, need to start again.

Step 5: Sing quietly to every hair so they know you care. “if I could only beeeeeee”

Step 6: Admire your work…Why yes, I am 3 inches taller now. 🙂

Step 7: “Staring through windows and my own reflection … how can no window encompass perfectionnnnn….”

Transcript of David’s vlog (really)

Actual vlog:

Aaaaaannd, in case there’s anyone else out there like me who needs to read things to fully process them, lol.

Transcript of David’s vlog:

Hey everybody * eyes look side to side* it’s … David here! I’m … not dead! I’m still here. I’m still alive. I … am… still, well, I haven’t made a video blog in a long time. I’ve been kinda lazy with that. I don’t know if I’m sorry about it ‘cause I don’t like making them (laughs) but… I just take forever to make them. I don’t know how to edit. Being two years away from technology has not helped with that but I thought it’d be good to make one to let you know that I’m still here that I’m not lazy* and just sitting around my house… but I’m working… I am writing. I’m [sings J ] “getting to know me, figuring out who I am … ‘cause I’ve never done that before.”

Ya, I’m doing things … if you want to know what I’m doing literally right now, I just finished exercising, well, I didn’t just finish, but then I went to the piano and got distracted with music ideas and then my grandma came over and she brought me this delicious lunch (shows empty plate)… well, it’s not here, this is what’s left of what I ate. But there’s nothing like grandma’s love and tasting that and her cooking.

Ah, what else? … I … am back from my mission. I already said that. You already know. But it’s been so nice getting to take this time, that I’ve NEVER taken before, because before I just had no idea what I was doing … “I’ll just make everybody happy, even though everybody wants different things and everyone was rushing me.” Just making all those higher-up people, trying to please them, but I realize, YOU KNOW WHAT? That’s not what I want to do, that’s NEVER what I wanted to do but I just felt like I was supposed to… BUT NOW (starts walking)… I AM BACK… the mission helped me not be so self-conscious, believe in myself a little more and, uh, I feel fresh (big smile, sparkly eyes, the whole deal).

And, well, I went to L.A. It freaked me out. Because, after two years of not thinking about yourself, just helping other people, and all of that. To coming back to the entertainment world where it’s all about YOU, and how important you are, and letting everybody know that, and how great you are, and everybody look at you – it was weird.

And that’s why I came straight back to Utah. Found amazingly talented people here, locally, who have done a lot of really national, international things… but they’re here… hidden GEMS of people that I’m getting to work with.

Next week I’ll be going to somewhere that I absolutely LOVE, getting to work with people that I LOVE (big smile). Can’t wait to see them again (twinkly eyes thrown in) and work with them once again. I’ll let you know more about it when I’m there.

But just been … WRITING (bangs piano… like a BOSS!) … nothing, well. It’s not all quite done yet, so I’m not going to show it to you yet. I’m, but I want it to be right. And I feel like instead of just rushing and trying to just “oh, I’ll just throw things at people so that they’re happy,” I feel like it’ll be better, even though I’m slow, and taking time. It’ll be right, and it’ll be better for everybody. And I’ll feel a lot better about it. Whether I make mistakes, at least they’re my mistakes, and not everybody else’s, that they made for me.

SO, I appreciate everything you say… on Twitter and other things… I’ve gotten back, and there’s Instagram now, and who knows what’ll come up next but (looks down)

I read your things, your comments, how you don’t like my hair short or that you’re excited about the new music that’ll be coming or what am I up to, how am I doing?

I’m doin’ great, how’re YOU doing? I hope you have a GREAT weekend and I uh… lost my train of thought, but that’s okay. I guess it’s a sign that this is all I need to say.

So. That is it. And. Until next time. Ciao.

* please point me to who called him lazy so I can throttle them
