Miracle at Red Rock by Taterzen

Tuacahn

A big THANK YOU to the lovely and amazing Abrra for sending me a version of this pic with “Tuacahn” spelled the right way around! 🙂

.

I have been happily lapping up the David Archuleta concert recaps from Tuacahn and Midland. I take seriously the blessed opportunity to relive those performances through the eyes of others. When David began his series of shows in mid-September, he called them “warmup concerts.”

I wondered about that terminology because it never sounded to me like he needed warming up. Credit to David though, he knew what he was doing; and he was so warmed up by the time he got to St. George, he caught on fire. Suffice it to say, the audience was summarily toasted.

You all know how things went at Tuacahn, but I have a side story I want to share. Yep, this one is all about me. I see some of you nodding off already, but David plays a part here, so hang on. I have to begin by going backwards (kind of like my real life). I have mentioned the facts below before, but they are pertinent to what happened in November of 2015.

My first opportunity ever to see David live was in 2009, in Idaho Falls. I persuaded my husband to go with me. He had declared himself to be a “fan by marriage,” but that was about it. We ended up in the second row. I was pleased, but hubby immediately discerned that he was sitting directly in front of a ginormous speaker.

David’s opening act was an Irish rocker. When she began, that giant speaker delivered, and what may have been Irish banshees behind us began to shriek. My husband turned to me with a look I won’t describe because I will start laughing all over again which wouldn’t be nice. Let’s just say that he and I have been married for so long, I can actually hear the expressions on his face. They said, “Who is that? What is going on and why am I here?!?”

The audio bombardment nearly had my husband in a fetal position before David even took the stage, and on the way home, hubby submitted his resignation as a pop concert attendee.

*************

Fast forward to 2015 and the concert announcement in Tuacahn. We have grandchildren in Las Vegas and extended family in St. George. I convinced my husband to head south, and in record time I might add.

Miracles for this unrequited fan began to unfold during the first concert held amidst the beautiful red rocks. My husband seemed to be engaged with David from the get-go, watching, listening intently, smiling from time to time. He joined in heartily with the crowd in their gloved/muffled applause. He was impressed, extremely impressed, and we talked about it for some time afterward. What had he not heard before now? I was not about to question him. I just knew he was suddenly a big fan of his own volition.

I had two extra tickets for the next night, and my husband actually sold them to a contact in St. George while I was at the fan luncheon. I have no doubt that his new appreciation for David’s talent and his sales skills did the trick. He sold them for full price.

My aunt and uncle who reside in St. George had tickets for the second night and we drove them to the venue. I love these people! They are both 87 and have been married for 68 years. They get “togetherness” and they do it well. They stood to dance and clap at every invitation David offered and were so happy to be there. They could not quit talking about his talent and his charismatic demeanor. Score 2 more.

After the concert, we drove to my aunt and uncle’s home for hot chocolate. My cousin Susan (their daughter) joined us. She and her husband had been at the concert too. I have always been a little suspicious of Susan. She is a mother of 8, a grandmother of 21 and doesn’t look a day over 40. What kind of women do that? My suspicions dissolved instantly when she began to gush about David. What was going on here? Turns out she adores everything about David, especially his voice. Who knew? Why had we never gotten together for some communal gushing? And the night wasn’t over. Susan talked about her grown children who are big David fans. Several of them have every album David has made! I was completely flummoxed and totally lost track of the scoreboard in my head.

Now, I don’t think I am the only fan who has had family members misinterpret my admiration for David Archuleta; and I don’t think I am the only fan who has been the object of incessant teasing by an annoying few. But I do know this for sure: I have been a never-doubting fan for years and I am looking smarter all the time.

Deep in the heart of @DavidArchie: Texas Concert Recap from Calgary’s Awestruck

That smile … and that shag rug of glorious hair… says it all, doesn't it?

That smile … and that shag rug of glorious hair… says it all, doesn’t it?

(Salsa alert at 1:27 🙂 … thanks Shelley for the ninja vids!!!)

F. R. E. E. E. D. O. M. in Midland Texas

It all started with the decision to NOT listen to any YouTube videos from post mission concerts – save for BYU Homecoming Surprise Crush/Glorious and The Prayer (I couldn’t resist). This was even before I knew we were going to Midland Texas. It wasn’t easy, but I’m glad I did it. The impact of this concert on me would not have been the same. Numb was a revelation, the Tarzan Medley more fun, Everybody Hurts more intense…

Also, when they announced at the beginning of the concert that there were to be no photographs/videos to be taken – David wanted everyone to just enjoy the concert – I made a conscious decision to be as ‘in the moment’ as I could – and did it ever make an impact on the way I was able to totally engage with him on each song and between song chatter.

I wanted to hear David’s voice post – mission LIVE. I have to say that he delivered in Midland Texas. David is figuring out how to do things HIS way and as a result there is only one word for what transpired and that is: F.R.E.E.E.E.D.O.M.

F. Free Movement – you could see the music running through his body in a truly fluid motion – note he should do more Spanish songs

R. Rich lower register

E. Evolving – as he becomes more and more confident with how he wants to entertain, through his own music, the covers he chooses and between song chatter – very little of the awkward banter, rather focused and directional in his delivery, but still David in his choice of wording and angst when trying to convey his meaning

E. Expressive – with e-v-e-r-y song he gave 150%, so wanting to get his messages across. This more strongly came through for me at this concert than any other I have been fortunate enough to have been able to attend

E. Energetic, but without sacrificing his vocals – his voice soared

E. Engaged audience – I (and many others) stood for many of his songs – sorry to the people behind me, lol

D. Decidedly more comfortable on stage – probably because he is more comfortable within himself

O. :
Screen Shot 2015-11-15 at 2.03.15 PM

M. Moving that he shared so much, so freely and with unconscious humor – He was describing the interviews he had with some teen magazines (post Idol) and how they asked him what hair color he preferred in a girl. David responded that hair color didn’t matter, but it what was inside a person that counted. The interviewers would say to him ‘oh, that’s sweet, but our readers want to know what color hair you prefer’ David then smacked that palm of his hand against his forehead and introduced his love song My Kind of Perfect.

After the concert, as hubby and I were driving back to our hotel he said to me “THAT was special”

Yup, it was special indeed – Thank you David!

— Awestruck

p.s.
I will never forget the collective groan “NOOOOOO” from the crowd when David told us he said to his manager that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to continue to do music. He was on fire and I really hope he felt the love from the crowd.

seinfelddance.gif~c200

“American Idol Season 7 runner up David Archuleta was first in the hearts of his fans Thursday night at he performed at the Wagner Noel!

David is restarting his career in music after a two year hiatus when he was away on a mission trip in Chile. Fans were not disappointed as David was an excellent voice throughout the show.

The theater was electric as women of all ages responded with enthusiastic applause and screams is David belted out his hits, familiar ballads and some of the new songs he’s written after returning from his mission trip.

In between songs, David shared his heart concerning the music business, fame and the price it exacts. The performance didn’t feel like it was taking place in the huge Wagner Noel Center, but instead it felt as if it was in more of an intimate setting, with David pouring out his heart to his fans on his concerns about where his career was taking him, the stress of trying to be a ‘people pleaser’ and the decision to put everything on hold for two years while he was gone on the mission trip.

David’s voice was amazing as he serenaded his fans with his own hits and others from ‘The Tarzan Soundtrack’, U2, R.E.M. and several new originals that will be released in early 2016.

The first of these will be a song called, ‘NUMB’. Archuleta says it was a culmination of all the stress and worry about his career, family and fan pressures and ultimately choosing to follow his own heart.

Look for ‘Numb’ to be released in January 2016.”

By Rich Lopez
56450418000d0.imageExtended breaks in pop music can go either way. Fans either move on to the next big thing or wait with anticipation for the follow-up album. Neither of that swayed David Archuleta. After a two-year sabbatical, the “American Idol” alum returned with an entirely different outlook on music.

In 2012, Archuleta left for South America for a missionary trip for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return in 2014, there was speculation if he’d return to music. He put that to rest with a number of live dates, including his concert tonight at the Wagner Noel.

“Coming back to a live show, I was almost wondering if I want to do this,” he said. “I didn’t know if I did. Now I want people to come out but I want them to feel fulfilled with something.”

This lends to his new attitude toward music. After his mission, something changed in Archuleta. Before he followed the formulaic approach to being a pop star. Now, he’s redefining his career.

“It’s a different experience now because I have a different perspective and motivation. Spending that time away from everything, it gave me purpose and also made me realize what I love most about music,” he said.

What he loves is the impact music can have.

These days, he’s using music to have conversations with his audience and encapsulate an experience. He talks about his shows as something just shy of watching a motivational speaker.

But really, Archuleta sounds like he doesn’t want to waste time with a meaningless set list.

“My music feels more personal now and I love being able to give that to people,” he said. “I lost myself trying to make everyone happy before and I was numb. Now, I pay attention to how I feel and I think that comes out. I have a new song about that whole experience.”
This should answer any questions about Archuleta releasing new music. He just doesn’t elaborate on a new album or release dates.

He said that living according to what’s most important to him is a priority. By doing so, he can deliver a new and improved David Archuleta.

“I want people to have a good time and have fun singing along to my songs,” he said. “But I also want people to be motivated to be the best of themselves. That’s my goal now.”

Tuacahn: My Kind of Concert

Lucky us! David’s back. With a purpose. To write songs, to sing, to share his messages via his art, his way. Bravo!

TOfan asked me to write a recap as this is my first David concert since December 4, 2011, at the Sherman Theatre at Stroudsburg, PA. Yes, that was a stop on David’s “My Kind of Christmas” tour.  And yes, that was David’s music, his Christmas experiences expressed, his way.

With David’s decision to take a hiatus and pursue what is, from my understanding, a major milestone of his faith, it became routine to check in infrequently.  I am thankful to TOfan for her wit, charm and perserverance in maintaining  SnowAngelz and all the #utternonsense (her words 😀) she has posted through the years.

I attended Tuacahn Friday and Saturday nights with the lovely SnowAngelz themselves, TOfan and Refnaf.  After the Friday evening concert concluded, TOfan asked me what was my favorite  performance. And I couldn’t name one particular one. After digesting the whole experience for a bit, I believe my favorite performance was David, the entertainer, and the banter he obviously planned to share beyond his songs.

Ever the Message Man, he was determined to speak his prose, sometimes, yes awkwardly, and, now with an acceptance of who he is and how he speaks.  Comfortable, ever evolving, in his own skin. It’s his kind of prose, his way. Yeah, this was my kind of concert.

David waving at TOfan (not really).

David waving at TOfan (not really).

If someone created one of those Word pictorials where all the words David spoke Friday and Saturday evenings were represented by size, the two biggest and boldest words would be Mission and Love.

That David is very proud of having made the decision and completed his Mission in Chile is obvious from all that he shared.  That it has shaped his future and changed him was the overarching message through out the concert.

And speaking of love, David took great care and made it a point both evenings to explain his kind of love, both to the oft shouted “I love you, David!” as well as his explanation of why he wrote and the meaning of “My Kind of Perfect.”  The lady who ends up on his arm will most definitely have an inner light, a sparkle in her eye, and a high level of self-awareness.  😍 However eye and hair color are immaterial and blind date phone numbers are not his way to meet girls.  👎  I’m really liking this “love” theme.  It’s purposeful and the message is clear.

As far as his song performances, I enjoyed all…yeah, I am always a little more the ballad lover.  “Forevermore”  and “Everyone Hurts” were sublime. “Numb” was fresh and catchy.

My thanks to the great and wonderful TOfan and Refnaf for allowing me to tag along and warmest regards to all the fans I met again or for the first time.  Hope to see everyone again real sooooooon at a David concert!

Love this review! Powerless under the spell of The Archuleta!
“…By the time he lit into his cover of Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know” he was sounding great and working the stage like a pro. And by his third song, “Don’t Run Away,” he was even bringing some powerful emotion to his delivery…. Still, I wanted to remain a curmudgeon. I had this idea in my head that Archuleta was overrated. But I found myself grudgingly applauding. He had earned it after all.”

My personal D’Arch takedown story

Screen Shot 2015-10-31 at 2.40.59 PM

.

So this appeared in my SAz email today. Full disclosure: I had a heads up that I’d probably be getting one of these thanks to a thoughtful David fan.

Still, actually seeing the words “Takedown issued by David Archuleta” gave me a start. It’s something I’d expect from this David Archuleta …

.
But I digress.

Once I got over the initial terror of David showing up at my door and banging on it Nandito Ako style till I came out and agreed to go for halo halo with him, it actually made me chuckle a little.

Hey, if you’ve seen my little Numb video, it’s from so far away it looks like I filmed it from space… it had, like 5 views, and I have exactly zero subscribers on my so-called channel (for obvs. reasons).

But I imagine other actual amazing videographers *cough*Shelley*cough*Muldur*cough* must’ve received the same notice and had their fantastic vids taken down and for that I am very sad.

I totally get that it’s probably just business (and tbh, I’m extremely excited that it might mean bigger things are planned for that incredible song) but, on the whole, I’m in the camp that believes all these vids are a great way to promote the artist. Especially one who shines so brightly live.

Shine isn’t even the right word. Ignites like a rescue flare that could burn a hole in the ozone… that level of chills-inducing intensity is what I’m talkin’ about. But that’s my probably worthless opinion, considering I know zilch about the music business and have my own selfish reasons for wanting every moment of every David concert to be available to me on YouTube.

Can I just say again how grateful I am to every videographer who’s ever captured D’s incredible live performances in far flung places around the world for all of us to get to share?? THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You all ROCK! Big time. And I do not say it enough. I rely on those vids mostly for the mp3s, because,  oddball that I am, I actually love listening to those versions, screaming and all.

Some artists record their own concerts and by some kind of tech wizardry have digital versions ready for peeps to buy as they leave the show. Someday, my friends. Someday.

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

What do you guys think?

“David Archuleta singing Si vas para Chile at The Luz de las naciones show tonight. He’s talking about his mission in Chile at the beginning. Here is a translation: ‘I served a mission in the beautiful country of Chile and I was able to do things I liked, like share music. Even when I wasn’t good at speaking my companion would go up to people and say, would you like to hear my companion sing, He has a beautiful song that talks about God and contains a message? I learned that my abilities and weaknesses worked together so that I could be useful in God’s hands. I loved serving my brothers and sisters in Chile as Elder Archuleta. The time I spent with them strengthened my perspective and changed my life. I would like to dedicate the famous song Si vas para Chile (If you go to Chile) to my beloved Chilean brothers and sisters’.”

21ADELEWEB-blog480In a musing on aging posted to social media, Adele has announced that her long-awaited new album will be titled “25,” following the tradition of her first two releases, “19” and “21.”

Named for the age she was while writing it, “25” will be released on Nov. 20 via Columbia in the United States. The 11-track album comes close to five years after “21,” which sold some 30 million copies worldwide and won seven Grammys. The album’s debut single, “Hello,” will be available to purchase and stream on Oct. 23; a video for “Hello,” directed by Xavier Dolan and shot near Montreal, will also be released that day.

“My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record,” Adele, 27, wrote on Wednesday. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.”

The singer added: “Turning 25 was a turning point for me, slap bang in the middle of my twenties. Teetering on the edge of being an old adolescent and a fully-fledged adult, I made the decision to go into becoming who I’m going to be forever without a removal van full of my old junk.”

The music was first teased on Sunday, in a commercial during “X Factor UK” that provided a preview but few details. “Hello, it’s me,” she sang in the clip. “I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet/To go over everything/They say that time’s supposed to heal you/But I ain’t done much healing.”

In her open letter, Adele concluded, “25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing.”

“And I’m sorry it took so long, but you know, life happened,” she wrote.

SPAZZ ALERT #2
WE MIGHT GET BRAND-NEW GILMORE GIRLS AMAZINGNESS!!!!
720x405-GettyImages-104728353After giving new life to Full House, Arrested Development and Mr. Show, Netflix is once again in talks to revive another beloved series: Gilmore Girls. Actresses Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, who portrayed the mother-daughter duo Lorelei and Rory Gilmore on the dramedy series, are in talks to reprise their roles and return to Stars Hollow for the Netflix series, which could go into production as early as next year. The series originally ran from 2000 to 2007.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Netflix revival would feature four 90-minute movies as opposed to the conventional 10 to 12 episode order. Although the WB/CW originally aired Gilmore Girls, Netflix had firsthand evidence of the show’s enduring popularity, as reruns were a “strong performer” on the streaming service.

In addition to locking in the lead actresses, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino will also return to the fold with the revival; a contract dispute prevented Sherman-Palladino from working on Gilmore Girls’ seventh and final season, and her participation in the revival would bring a sense of closure for fans.

SPAZZ ALERT #4

New Sara Bareilles album, “What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress,” Nov. 6
bareilles-waitress460a.
The album features Sara performing songs from the new Broadway musical she composed.

“I fell more deeply in love with the writing of the musical Waitress than I had ever imagined,” Bareilles said in a statement about the new album. “It proved impossible for me to imagine handing over the songs to the show before selfishly finding a way to sing them myself.”

This is the first song I’ve heard from it (it’s been released as a single) and I dare you not to burst into tears. Stunningly beautiful.

I don’t know why but I can’t stop staring at this picture. The contrast. Like a grizzled older dude who’s lived, you know, is looking in the mirror at his younger self. To back when he wore his first cap and it took over his head and made him look 8, except that he was 8. Back when his eyes were bright and hopeful and he glowed the glow of those with a pure heart. Back when the world was his oyster, which thrilled and terrified him at the same time. And there’s a #food tag so you know they gave David snacks, which makes me happy.

Perhaps I over-think things? lol
