My personal D’Arch takedown story

.

So this appeared in my SAz email today. Full disclosure: I had a heads up that I’d probably be getting one of these thanks to a thoughtful David fan.

Still, actually seeing the words “Takedown issued by David Archuleta” gave me a start. It’s something I’d expect from this David Archuleta …

But I digress.

Once I got over the initial terror of David showing up at my door and banging on it Nandito Ako style till I came out and agreed to go for halo halo with him, it actually made me chuckle a little.

Hey, if you’ve seen my little Numb video, it’s from so far away it looks like I filmed it from space… it had, like 5 views, and I have exactly zero subscribers on my so-called channel (for obvs. reasons).

But I imagine other actual amazing videographers *cough*Shelley*cough*Muldur*cough* must’ve received the same notice and had their fantastic vids taken down and for that I am very sad.

I totally get that it’s probably just business (and tbh, I’m extremely excited that it might mean bigger things are planned for that incredible song) but, on the whole, I’m in the camp that believes all these vids are a great way to promote the artist. Especially one who shines so brightly live.

Shine isn’t even the right word. Ignites like a rescue flare that could burn a hole in the ozone… that level of chills-inducing intensity is what I’m talkin’ about. But that’s my probably worthless opinion, considering I know zilch about the music business and have my own selfish reasons for wanting every moment of every David concert to be available to me on YouTube.

Can I just say again how grateful I am to every videographer who’s ever captured D’s incredible live performances in far flung places around the world for all of us to get to share?? THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You all ROCK! Big time. And I do not say it enough. I rely on those vids mostly for the mp3s, because,  oddball that I am, I actually love listening to those versions, screaming and all.

Some artists record their own concerts and by some kind of tech wizardry have digital versions ready for peeps to buy as they leave the show. Someday, my friends. Someday.

You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

What do you guys think?

For anyone who loves the Spanish version of Glorious as much as I do, you can now download it HERE. (thx. to the lovely @rhiminee for the link)

For anyone who wants to watch the IF and Layton fan videos, I have them playing on repeat in Unplugged.

I was a bit sad too, when I realized we might be in for more banning of recording at concerts. Especially when the concerts happen mainly in 3 states out west.

Thanks for sharing your “takedown story” TOfan. Well, I did read somewhere that those vids for that song were being pulled. One can only hope that it means something along the lines of a single being released and/or video perhaps? Or…..maybe the man himself just does not want those songs out there (from a future album that has not been released yet), who knows. We respect his reasons of course. Loved your response to all this, haha….yes, you can call him at “his super secret takedown headquarters”. Lol.
I agree it is a great way to promote an artist, to have videos out there. I suppose some of them must fall under certain guidelines however. Yes, it would be wonderful to have a recording (s) of David’s concerts to purchase. I know many of us are ready and willing to support him and purchase whatever becomes available, just want to hear him sing!
I do love the song Numb, in fact, that is the kind of music I would love to hear more on radio (probably would listen to the radio more often).
Ditto with thanks to all the videographers out there, hope they all know how much they are appreciated! I also hope that David knows, somewhere in his wonderful being, just how much his voice, his music and delivery of each song, really does move and inspire people (from all walks of life).
Thanks for sharing the takedown with a grain of humour! Had to laugh, loved it. 🙂

    Thank you Abrra!

  4. Lurker Fan says:

TOfan, sorry your numb video got taken down but I’m dying here from laughing too hard! Thanks for sharing your takedown story, David better replace it with an official mv haha! 😂

  5. Martha says:

This is very educational. I had no idea..😳

  6. TaterZen says:

Well, I am CRUSHed, if ya know what I mean. I don’t take videos ever, and it’s not because I don’t want the memories (my YouTube attendance will prove that). It’s just that once the kid starts singing live, I am pretty much stone cold stationary. Like extreme mesmerization until it’s over. And now look… No special copyright strikes for me. Bummer. I hope I don’t have to turn in my stan card.

  7. muldur says:

Thanks for making what felt like a really awful moment for me (when I got my takedown notice personally created by David Archuleta) feel a whole lot lighter. 🙂

    • mlpb3 says:

I love your videos, so well done. We are spoiled. You are in good company of dedicated fans who received take-down notices; I feel left out,.. You did it for all the right reasons; your sharing made many happy.

      • Grammyj says:

I agree! Thanks for all your great videos, Mulder, that you share with those of us that live too far away to go to David’s concerts. Thanks TOfan for the lighthearted way you dealt with this, and David better make a music video for Numb!

    • refnaf says:

      ((((Mulder))))
Thanks for all you have done to get the concert experience to us!

    • TOfan says:

Thank YOU, muldur… you’ve provided a real lifeline for a lot of fans around the world. ♥

    • missbianca says:

Hugs to you (((muldur))) and many thanks for all those video plays I watched. Your camera always had the sharpest focus, I think. Extra tech points.

I congratulate you on following your conscience. The right thing is rarely the easiest thing.

  8. oliveoil says:

Hey Tofan, I’m sad we can’t watch Numb anymore. I really, really love that song. But hopefully its because it is an original song that he plans to release on his new album, maybe even a video he wants to surprise us with. Anyway, you always make me laugh and look on the bright side. The way you thugged up his red album picture is just too funny !!!

  9. tawna21 says:

My goodness!! Thank you to all who have provided these amazing videos in the past! Your work will definitely be missed!!!! I just hope this means new things are coming SOON from Team Archie!!

  10. refnaf says:

Love the way you can bring humour to every situation TOfan!
Sad that these vids are gone…… But anticipating good things to come from the man himself

  11. jackryan4da says:

For Archies, they are not actually gone cos am sure we have downloaded them and saved them somewhere, right? It is a different for non-Archies who are just being exposed to him or others who are being re-introduced to him & his new work. There is lost opportunity there.
Am hoping TeamArchie will up its game when the time comes to promote his new official work.

    • TOfan says:

{{{{JR}}}} you bring up an interesting point… we ODD fans often think of ourselves as “The Fans” but as I saw in IF (just as one example), we’re just a teeny tiny niche market really… I think most people who follow David on IG/FB/Twitter only know what he shares, they’re not stalking youTube after concerts waiting for vids like we are (I certainly don’t do that for any other artist, even ones I really love). Maybe he has plans to do more with his own YouTube channel and bump up his subscribers (rather than relying on fan vids), who knows?

I saw Kari’s tweet about lots of vids being taken but just because you see cameras up doesn’t mean (a) someone’s recording the whole song or (b) they’re posting it anywhere. I saw lots of IG postings of 15 second snippets after Layton & the BYU concert and with everyone’s attention spans being so short these days, maybe that is the best way to build buzz now. 🙂

      • jackryan4da says:

TOfan – Well, from someone who has been through numerous copyright notices (thank goodness not from DA himself), I thoroughly enjoyed your on point but humorous take on it. That’s why I always make a point to visit your site. You guys always make me smile if not keep me in stitches. Thanks so much for that 🙂

        • TOfan says:

I really appreciate that, JR, ‘cuz I know how you’ve had to scramble many times to stay a step or two ahead of the youTube police! LOL All in the name of supporting a certain someone. 🙂

    • Martha says:

Since only Numb was asked to be taken down, one can hope that a release of Numb, and possibly a music video, is in the offing. But there is something special about live performances that a produced song doesn’t capture. In my opinion….

      • marin says:

I am in complete agreement with you on that, Martha. Especially with David. Live shows I’ve been to often don’t sound as good as the recording but it’s the exact opposite with David. One reason I appreciate everyone who shares their videos. Muldur, let me add my thanks as well, your sound quality is always so excellent! And thanks to TOfan, you’ve made a tense situation so funny, yet with much truth.

  12. djafan says:

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”

I’m right with you TOFan!!! It all just seems very interesting to me. I love love Numb and it only makes sense that there is something happening with this song since it’s the only one removed. And yes most of us will still be able to see it and will willingly pay when it comes out for copies of it in the hopefully near future.

This as with other posts are spot on sprinkled with your wonderful humor, thank you 👍

  13. missbianca says:

Your analysis of the “strike” notice really took us along on your thought process. I admit, I was surprised that the takedown was in David’s name since as far as I know he’s never used that superpower before. With new technologies that can recognize what song is being performed, and with YouTube planning to charge for some content in the near future, our expectations for videos may be dashed a bit in the future.

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”

Funny that djafan used that line in her post right above me. My story will be a bit more personal, though. It is that line and the sheepish grin David gives the camera during his sensational first Idol “Imagine” that cemented me as a fan. I think of it as going like this, “You may say I’m a dreamer (hoo boy, don’t they), but …” Sadly, i never caught him smiling at that point afterwards, but I’m still here.
