I’ve always thought it would make an awesome album cover for David.

Wellll, the photographer, Walid Azami, just posted another pic from that shoot on his Tumblr:

At this rate, the new music he’s working on will sound like the Soul Man from Utah vibe he belted out back in the Star Search days (not that there’s anything wrong with that 🙂 ).

Here I am with all these @DavidArchie questions hanging from my ceiling low….

tumblr_muibvuMetO1snyoa8o1_500These 10 questions are for you guys… since so many peeps are MIA lately, I would really love to know how you lovely folks who are still here feel about things (feel free to comment anonymously) … DavidTweetQuestion #1: Wanting things done NOW and yet wanting them done RIGHT. Hmm, who does that sound like?

#2: Why do you think David hasn’t done a vlog yet? (Is it because of Q#1?)

#3: Have you stepped back from (a) David himself or (b) just David-world? And why?

#4: What do you think this new David music he’s working on will sound like? What are you hoping it will sound like?

#5: Do you think David is even more uncomfortable with fame/having fans now that he’s been away from all that for two years? Or do you think it’s given him new perspective that will help him set boundaries?

#6: What is your most fun memory of being a David fan? (You do remember when it was fun, right? 😉 )

#7: If the next David “show” is nothing more than him singing at a cupcake shop, wearing that belt, accompanied by Sunny on spoons, are you in?

#8: Whenever he does feel ready to do his first vlog, are you hoping for a rambling talking one or a singing one?

#9: Are fan blogs over? (Should I bother keeping this one going?… If no one answers any Qs, I’ll guess I’ll have my answer LOL.)

#10: Since a second-hand MKOCT box raised so much $$ for a good cause, should David consider crowd-funding a singing vlog (i.e. if they raise, let’s say, $1,000 for ChildFund (or another charity), David posts a cover of “His Eye is on the Sparrow” (my own personal choice, bwahaha)?

We cry you a river, @DavidArchie

A friend on FB posted this amazing story about scientists who looked at human tears under a microscope. Each type of tears (laughing till you cry, tears from grief, from onions, etc.) revealed its own vastly different pattern when looked at closely.

So I started thinking… how many times has David made us cry? What would those tears look like? Fortunately I have a close personal friend at the National Imaginary Science Institute of Canada and she got me to relive all those tearful David moments, put those tears under a microscope and here are the results:

Tears from listening to Imagine look like this:

Imagine

Scorchingly painful tears from the AI7 finale when David came 2nd look like this:

Tears when the Build-A-Bear song comes on shuffle and you can’t change it fast enough:

Tears when you watch David being unbearably adorkable slash touching in a vlog:

How about you guys? Do you have any David-related tears you’d like examined under a microscope?

Quincy Jones produces Nikki Yanofsky’s new album

It’s no secret I’m a huge jazz fan, and I first heard Montreal’s Nikki Yanofsky when she was about 12, literally channelling Ella Fitzgerald (she’s about 20 now). A true jazz prodigy. And then last year, I heard her live for the first time when she stepped onstage here in Toronto during a Jason Mraz concert and sang a duet with him. Amazing.

So I’m thrilled for her that Quincy Jones produced her latest album and he’s become a mentor of hers but meanwhile the David fan in me is screaming, “That should be David!!!!” lol

Anyhoooo, if you’re at all interested in how Nikki & Quincy’s relationship came about, read on….

By: Nick Krewen Music, Published on Mon May 12 2014
Montreal’s Nikki Yanofsky got some not-so-secret assistance on her latest album, Little Secret.

You can’t do much better than having Quincy Jones, the dominant producer behind Michael Jackson’s three blockbuster albums Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad, and arranger and conductor of such Frank Sinatra classics as “Fly Me to the Moon,” in your corner.
Since the early 1950s and his initial days accompanying Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie, Jones, 81, has built a reputation as one of the greatest influencers of 20th century contemporary music in his capacities as trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, conductor, producer and executive. Still a prominent force in today’s music scene, the 27-time Grammy Award recipient served as executive producer of Yanofsky’s Little Secret.

If that isn’t enough, the impresario also co-manages Yanofsky, and was in Toronto during Canadian Music Week to, among other things, throw his support behind his 20-year-old Canadian protégé and personally introduce her during her album release party at Revival on Friday night.

“This lady is really special,” he told the packed crowd. “She can sing like Ella (Fitzgerald), and she can kick it baby, she can kick!”

And with that endorsement, Yanofsky and a seven-piece band that included a three-man horn section, revealed her new aggressive sound that is still rooted in the jazz she’s been singing since she was 5, but infused with R&B-scented pop, somewhat comparable to Jully Black’s more upbeat fare.

“I would describe it as accessible jazz,” Yanofsky revealed in an interview earlier in the day. “Jazz-hop is what I’ve been calling it, but it’s rooted in jazz and for me, there are a lot of pop elements, but I feel there are more jazz elements than pop.”

From the first note of “Little Secret,” anchored by pedal piano note and spiced up by the presence of sax, trombone and trumpet, and the punchy arrangement behind “Something New,” which showcased Yanofsky’s powerful roar while interpolating melodic references to Jones’ evergreen classic “Soul Bossa Nova” (or as we know it here in Canada, the theme from the defunct game show Definition) and Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man,” the music swung heartily, even if some of the subsequent numbers seemed mild by contrast.

And although she threw out a couple of standards — a fairly straight jazz interpretation of “Witchcraft” and a curious update of Louis Armstrong’s “Jeepers Creepers” — the release of Little Secret marks an important transition, both as a singer and a songwriter, in terms of confidence and maturity, since the release of 2010’s Nikki.

“The original songs were kind of all over the map on the last one,” admits Yanofsky, who will tour Canada in the fall after playing the summer circuit of European jazz festivals.
“I was super young — I was 15 when I was writing those songs, so I’ve definitely grown a lot as a singer, artist and a writer.”

If only every aspiring musician could be privy to the experience Yanofsky has already accumulated in eight short years: touring with the late Marvin Hamish; jamming with Stevie Wonder; parachuted last-minute into a Montreux Jazz Festival headlining slot with Herbie Hancock; sharing lead vocal duties with Gloria Estefan and singing at a Barbra Streisand tribute with the legendary performer in the house, and of course, singing the Vancouver Olympics theme “I Believe” — all before she was 19.

Yanofsky met Jones when she was 14, at a time when she was beginning to work on an album with another legendary Grammy-winning producer, Phil Ramone.
“Quincy had heard about me from a mutual friend of ours, but also because he heard from Phil; they worked so closely together throughout the years,” Yanofsky recalls.
The mentor-student relationship was cemented a year later when Yanofsky, playing a show in Rotterdam, ran into Jones in the hotel lobby.

“He ended up sitting with me and chatting for awhile about music, and he ended up asking what I was doing that Friday, the one day I didn’t have a show. And he said, ‘Alright, perfect, you’re going to come to Montreux.’ And I did the festival with him and Herbie Hancock and Richard Bona and Greg Phillinganes. I’ll never forget that. I was rehearsing with Herbie Hancock and I was freaking out.”

Since that moment, Jones has recruited her as a rotating member of Quincy Jones Global Gumbo All-Stars, a collective of young, gifted musical prodigies from around the world that tours frequently.

On Saturday, Jones, whose lists of superstar discoveries ranges from Will Smith to Oprah Winfrey, told JAZZ FM’s Ross Porter in a CMW interview that he’s smitten by Yanofsky’s ability.

“Nikki is one of the most talented kids on the planet. I’m not kidding,” he said. “What I love is she brings all the roots of the best we have of the past and putting it in the present, because literally, that’s how jazz stays so powerful.

“Nikki is the bomb. All I can say is that she is frightening. Don’t fail to listen to her, because this lady is just starting.”

For her part, Yanofsky says Jones’ role as co-manager falls more as artistic mentor than business advisor.

“He was the exec producer on Little Secret, and in terms of artistic decisions, that’s how he manages,” Yanofsky gushed in the lounge of a downtown hotel. “I would basically finish a song and say, ‘OK, what do you think of this?’ and he would suggest, ‘Take off that horn line, or add this here. Make the bass louder. Put a scat here. Put a harmony on this line.’

“It’s amazing that he’s in my corner. I can’t even put into words how appreciative I am of everything that he’s done for me, and just the fact that he really believes in me means so much.”

The @DavidArchie Mom Factor

Happy Mother’s Day Weekend to everyone who has a mom, is a mom, or takes care of others like a mom!!!

************

This article is good news for Mr. David Archuleta for obvious mom-related reasons…. 🙂

mom-musicinfluencer_0129115318306_16x9_620x350What can I say about your mom that hasn’t already been said? Everybody knows that her intelligence won’t allow her to cook Minute Rice in under an hour. And we’ve all heard about her weight and subsequent baptism at Sea World. And let’s not forget about her disqualification from the ugly contest after losing her amateur status.

What you may not know about your mom is that she has become the most powerful person in music. Her tastes and habits, more than anyone else’s, influence the music you hear every day. Here’s how.

I gave up my dream of joining the ballet... dang you, Archuleta!!!

Still love this picture.

1. Your mom doesn’t know how to steal music.

Have you tried to explain torrents to your mom? “I have to download a file and open it, and that lets me download another file that I have to open to hear a song? That sounds complicated!”

Moms would rather just pay for a song from iTunes and have it added to their libraries automatically. Three quarters of iTunes customers are over 25 years old, as of a few years ago. While young people are just as likely to pay for music as the older folks, they’re also way more likely to download or copy music for free.

Contrary to popular belief, your mom is not so poor that she goes to KFC to lick other people’s fingers. She’s more willing to pay for music than you are. That makes her a more appealing audience for record labels.

If you don’t believe me, check out the iTunes charts right now. Capital Cities? Lea Michele? The Frozen soundtrack? That music reeks of your mom.

2. Your mom loves The Voice and/or American Idol and/orThe X Factor and/or Glee and/or Nashville.

The explosion of music-themed TV shows over the past 10 years has seen the creation of a few stars, some memorable performances and a new way to market music. The songs appear on TV and then are immediately available to download. And chances are your mom is way more into these shows than your dad is; the audiences for every single one of these showsskew female.

The best example of this is A Great Big World. Nobody had heard of this band a few months ago, but then their song “Say Something” was featured on So You Think You Can Dance andThe Voice. It immediately became the top song on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart. And you know what? Your mom loves that song. She cries every time she hears it. “No, I don’t. It’s just allergies.” Oh, mom.

3. Your mom loves Facebook and Pinterest.

Have you been on Facebook lately? No, of course not. You had to quit because of too many awkward interactions with your mom. Well, she’s still on there, sharing links and liking brands and not knowing what dubstep is.

Moms are more likely to use Facebook and Pinterest than the average person. They’re more likely to share stuff, to write their own blogs, to own a smartphone or tablet and use it to buy stuff online. In fact, in Canada, moms spend more time on social media than anybody else.

Before a music video goes viral, it has to go through your mom.

4. Your mom is the reason adult alternative exists.

You know how, six or seven years ago, a new radio station started up in your city, and it played music you actually like? You don’t like commercial radio, but this was bearable. They sometimes played bands you love, like Vampire Weekend and Death Cab For Cutie. They often played bands you like, including the Lumineers and Of Monsters and Men. And they always play Florence and the Machine, fun. and that Phillip Phillips song that’s in every commercial.

You may think that radio format is for you, but actually it’s for your mom, who is still hip and wants to hear new music that isn’t bubblegum pop or heavy rock. The radio format is calledadult alternative, but you can call it momcore.

5. Your mom can’t tell the difference between Imagine Dragons, Capital Cities, Bastille and OneRepublic.

So you have that in common.

Moms have proven that they spend money online, so as music has moved online, moms have become the target market. So the next time you hear an annoying song over and over on the radio and in TV commercials, blame your mother. She won’t know why you’re so cranky and will probably offer to make you a sandwich.
