Imagine buzz … for David, of course

So apparently one of this year’s Idol contestants sang “Imagine” last night *gasp* ….

k, now that you’ve recovered from that shocking news … here’s some of the buzz from last night’s performance, comparing it with David’s
(full disclosure: I haven’t watched Idol since S7, so I didn’t see it but I do give the guy full marks for chutzpah … it’s like a sculptor trying to re-create the magic of Michelangelo’s David … in butter) :

i believe SImom Cowell’s opinion.. i believe every Archie’s opinion… and i believe them coz i have the very same sentiment — nothing compares to David’s iconic version of Imagine. PERIOD. 🙂

  2. Kizzi says:

Yep. A “brotherhood of man” and the “world” living “as one” indeed. Indeed x 1M.

Remember Katee and William dancing to David’s “Imagine”….so gorgeous

I think there are songs on AI that contestants have to approach as make it or fail. David’s “Imagine” is such. And I can just hear David praising Joshua’s effort….sigh…I miss that humble, joy-inspiring 5 foot and not much more soulful & artistic spirit……guess it keeps me wanting more, eh?

    • Oh Dear! Had forgotten the dance. Remember the Choreographer loving David’s Imagine.
You are right Kizzi!! David would be praising Joshua!!

lol, ya eh!! You def are a honourary Canadian… loved your comment on the last thread too
      ((((hugs and miss you))))

  3. That is one of my favorites too!! (besides his first on Idol) Both were surprise performances.
Love David grinning from ear to ear beside his Billboard. Want one of those billboards in Iowa.

So cute leaning over the counter with the sleeping baby. ha! Who’s cuter??

ROTFL….first off, almost spewed my mouthful of water all over my computer at work with the opening gifs(?) of David fanning himself over Joshua singing Imagine!! Tofan, you are brilliant….funniest thing ever!!!! Bahahahaha!! Secondly, totally agree with everyone regarding Joshua’s version…he did a great job but didn’t even come close to David’s version!! No one ever will….not gonna happen. And that pic of Dvaid with the sleeping baby!!!! No words…. 🙂

I remember watching his first performance of Imagine live on tv. Of course the singing blew me away, but at that point I was already in fanzone and totally in love with his voice.

But I remember being SO impressed with his answer when Randy asked him why he didn’t sing the first verse: “I only had time for one verse and the 3rd one’s actually my favourite and I think it has a great message.” First of all, he was such a ball of giggles that I really didn’t think he’d be able to get anything coherent out of his mouth at all. But he did! Quickly and coherently. He didn’t come up with that answer because he thought it’d be a good thing to say on tv. No, I think it’s pretty obvious he gave his actual answer of why he chose the 3rd verse. And it really opened my eyes to how he really cares about what he’s singing. How he really pays attention to the lyrics and connects with them. And I think that made me think “hmm… there’s something special about this kid.”

    • TOfan says:

I actually totally forgot that I remember thinking the exact same thing… ‘cuz when Randy asked it, I expected the question to throw David off … and then he proceeded to give such an amazing answer. Also, after he sang Another Day in Paradise and Simon said something like “you can’t keep singing these depressing songs” and David shot back with “You think Imagine is depressing??” *snap* 🙂

  6. TOfan says:

VLOGGGGG!!!!!!!!!! (he must have set these up ahead of time… you know, when he wasn’t loafing around collecting dryer lint… 🙂 )

After seeing the BENCH FiX Billboard on the last day in Manila. We had Sherwin our driver drive by it a few times. Just could not believe how big it was. Its just crazy.

Also, cool story from Bryce Avary (The Rocket Summer) about how he came to write Stompin’ the Roses with David (from here, via Something ‘Bout Archie):

What was it like working with David Archuleta of American Idol and how did this alliance come about?
Oh man, he’s such a good kid – a good dude – a tremendous vocalist. I actually ran into him – it’s so weird man! I had this really weird thing happen one night where I was hanging out with friends and somehow we ended up bumping into Paula Abdul. And long story short – and of the weirdest things I could explain – but Paula Abdul ended up in my rental car with me in a parking garage – and we listened to my entire record Of Men And Angels. And then the very next night was the American Idol finale – and I was in the studio making a song called The Fight. And I got invited to that, and I was like “Well I can’t go, but maybe I’ll try to go to the after party.” I had to work. So I went to the after party and I ran into David Archuleta. It was a really humbling experience and flattering at the same time, because a lot of those American Idol people were coming up and wanting to take photos and stuff – which I thought was kind of the most surreal thing because I’m not famous or anything. But it really put even more into perspective how crazy that American Idol thing is, because it’s literally just guys and girls that go to shows that have great vocals – they tried out and made it onto the show and within a couple of months they’re superstars. And so I was meeting a bunch of thoseAmerican Idol people, and they were explaining how they had been to a bunch of Rocket Summer shows. And David Archuleta was a big fan. He just asked me if I would ever write a song for him, and I had never really done that. It was a cool experience to put myself in somebody else’s shoes and try to write a totally different song for his demographics. He came over to my house. We went and ate Thai food and wrote a little pop jam. And it was fun! (Editor’s Note: The song was called Stomping The Roses)

Some days (out of the expected 730), I just go about my business and let David go about his, knowing he is doing well, and also doing good.

After 24 hours of reminiscing, rehashing and replaying “Imagine,” and then seeing that cutie pie picture taken in BOISE’s Deseret Book, I had one of those miss-you-David days.

I still feel dang lucky to be a fan.

    • TOfan says:

((((geez)))) had one of those myself yesterday… and TRUE STORY, I swear! Yesterday I was walking to the subway after work, and Rainbow came on my iPod and I smiled thinking how grateful I was that D’s driver played it so often that he fell for it & recorded it, and when he sang the line “There’s a rainbow always after the rain,” I turned to look at a nearby fountain and saw this:
      rainbow

      Pretty dang cool, huh?! 🙂

      • archugeezer says:

Awww… some lovely reassurance. It was a sighting bigger than happenstance, bigger than coincidental serendipity, doncha think? Me too.

      • emmegirl14 says:

Pretty dang cool!! Rainbow, play it multiple times everyday!
Thanks for the STR story, another one of my very favorites!

  9. refnaf says:

Ahhh David’s Imagine…. I was so moved by his version> that’s the day I went to my kids and asked them “what is that youtube thing and how does it work?” I must have watched it 50 times in arow….I have not seen any idol and have not heard the Josh version and don’t feel the need, lol.

  10. peppertara says:

Oh thanks for all the goodies posted here. After David’s epic, history changing performance of Imagine, just can’t “Imagine” any other contestant taking on that song. Takes courage I might add and I did see Joshua’s performance and have to say he did a nice job but…..well folks, there is just no comparison. A talented guy but should have chosen another song, for his own sake, lol.
That sweet short video of David is just what everyone needed I think and one of my favorite photos…David’s smiling face in front of the giant billboard, love it!
Like refnaf, David’s Imagine propelled me into discovering youtube (among other things) and I also must have watched his performance 50 times in a row! Oh….life has not been the same since. 🙂
TOfan, love your rainbow experience! That song always puts a smile on my face and simply makes me feel good.
Don’t think it could be any sweeter for David’s fans, with all the little tidbits of info we are getting, short videos, lovely photos and even a food tweet! We can thank our lucky stars (and the wonderful Mr. Archuleta and his terrific manager). ❤

  11. emmegirl14 says:

Three incomparable performances – the same song (iconic song nonetheless), three different interpretations, each one so beautiful and stirring in its’ own right, each capable of moving one to tears….in my book, he has no equal.

I love them all, but there is something about his return to Idol performance, sitting on that stage, at that piano, singing yet another amazing version….idk, gets me clear down in my belly every time I watch it.

So nice to know I am not the only one feeling a few more pangs of “missing David” today. Funny how it just sneaks up on you.

    • TOfan says:

emme, I actually forgot about him coming back and doing that version! *bad fan* … I think what I remember most is that we hadn’t seen his hair without a beanie for ages and it was the big “reveal” 😆 😆 😆

  12. peppertara says:

Love every performance of David’s Imagine. Each unique and so beautiful. I would still love to see David perform on Idol again, after his mission…well, just because. Would be awesome if he could sing one of his own new songs (or anything for that matter) and blow people away. Many folks would be saying, wow…he’s still around, forgot how incredibly talented he is! Will have to check out his music. 🙂
