After David Archuleta posted his “Ribbon in the Sky” vlog yesterday, Agent Banana (aka abanana77) asked a very good question on twitter: “Ummmm – Why has he never sung in a vlog before?!?!?!?!?!?!?! … Seriously though, why has he waited 3 years to sing in a video blog. Like really sing. wow. completely blown away.”
I “pondered” on that and at first thought maybe he only now had the confidence to belt it out like that in a vlog (or he literally just never thought of doing it before). But then a lightbulb went off and I saw the truth: He knew we weren’t ready for it till now… he knew he’d wipe out his entire fan base before he’d reached his 21st birthday.
Last night was bad enough. I literally had to avert my eyes when I watched it the first time. It was too intense, too much power, too much amazingness … yes, too much David.

Thank goodness Absolute Archies tweeted an mp3 of the song so I could listen over and over …. and over. It took me a while before I could actually go back and watch him sing it. I can’t really explain it. I felt like I was intruding on real-world David singing in his room … to his dog. He was so relaxed, so finger-snappin’ free. His soulfulness bubbling up out of him like a rootbeer float. Not practiced, not polished, just David lettin’ it rip like only he can. Playing with glorious runs like he’s throwing dice. Nailing a pitch-perfect key change like he’s phoning home. I can’t even take it all in, tbh. Praise the Lord he “flubbed” that last high note just to remind us he’s flesh and blood … and that he let the performance stand without redoing it… beautiful warts and all.
Don’t get me wrong, the restaurant solo was amazing too… and I LOVED the crowd’s reaction almost as much as the song itself. But this vlog. This. Vlog.
It was icing on top of the world’s biggest chocolate cake … the cake being the weekend’s basketball antics. David at his adorkable best … wearing swishy skort-shorts. He truly was the best sport ever to attempt to play basketball to support a good cause… and then he sang like that … twice! After such a long drought, it was like being hit with a tsunami.
If anyone needed reminding why they became a David Archuleta fan, I think they got it this weekend. He’s so real and yet so unreal, if that makes sense.
Singing is the gift he loves giving … and we love getting. The look on his face when he said he wanted to do a clean take “for you guys”???? … that would be us … how asdfa;dfhajfg;kadjfksadjf lucky are we???

Yes, TOfan, I had the same feeling, only more like… this is what his neighbors heard when he was growing up, this belting out, random soulfulness, coming from somewhere over the backyard fences (or his room) the same voice his sibs would say, “shut up!” to. Yes, it was most def a glimpse into that time and place.

Love your description of David singing the vlog. It made me lol but yet was so spot on! I’ve actually seen other comments that some fans had trouble watching the vlog too because it felt sooo intimate to them. I loved it- finally, there was no microphone in front of his face!

as an aside I needed a routine blood draw this am and I am not easy. Love your post!!! I had to come out of lurkdom, even though I’m so stunned I really have nothing intelligent to say. For the past few months I’ve been trying to catch up on things in my life, spending time with my family and friends, etc. I read the fan sites almost every day for David news and have been excited here or there about a thing or two. I’ve agreed and disagreed with various commenters on various sites but haven’t posted. I’ve silently made donations to various causes promoted by David and his fans. I have a ticket to SOF but haven’t bought my airfare yet. My point is that I was sort of proud of myself to have found some sense of balance….not that I thought my ODD was waning, but I thought my life had a little more normalcy to it. And then BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is this little vlog and my world has once again been turned upside down, all perspective has vanished and I’ve been reduced to a pile of mush. I’m not sure it’s healthy for me to watch it too many times so I’m pacing myself. All those feelings, the need to see him live again, it all came rushing back…I am speechless……and not sure what to do with myself now. It’s as if he was singing directly to me. Thanks for letting me share…I feel a little better… 🙂

Like you, the first time viewing I had to turn away because of the intensity of his amazingness. It was also too good to be true. I think he should have left the end alone because the original one from the twitvids is what I kept playing over and over. It was perfectly short, but then again David never sings the same song in the same way twice. Also laughed aloud at your supposition of why he had never done that before – we really couldn’t handle it. This is the soul man that David deliberately dialed back for AI as stated by Dean in his book.
I also had the same thought as Janey that the Archuleta family and neighbours had this gold nugget in their midst all this time trying out notes and riffs of all shapes and sizes on unsuspecting ears LOL! Unbelievable!

Seems we have all been floored with this vlog (literally)! David is THE artist that sings from his heart and shares from his heart. That’s exactly what he did, shared his love with his fans in beautiful song and let us all wrap it around our hearts (how can you not)?

Good there’s only 2 games going on tomorrow night. Last night I was trying to watch the Anaheim/Nashville game and I guess the Canadian broadcasters have decided it’s the least important one to show because there was 3 other games going and they wouldn’t show the Ana/Nsh one until one of the other ones (which were in over time) ended. But luckily it seems to be the only game being aired at 10 tomorrow so it’ll probably be on TSN. (Note: if the Philadelphia/Buffalo game goes to overtime, this game might get moved to TSN2…)

About my post ^^^^, I was trying to find where I read it in Dean’s book. On looking back I believe it is in the first version of his book. When he updated it, some of the original material was edited out. He had noticed in prepping David for his AI songs that less runs and riffs were being sung. When David was asked about it, he replied that he was gearing himself more towards pop. Remember in David’s latest blog he said the crew asked him to sing something – soulful, and so he did. I can only think that in his mind he tailors his technique to fit the needs of his audience at the time. Another example was the Nascar NA, which was his simplest version yet.
I apologize in advance for my version of events if there are inaccuracies – LOL!

So much good news and all happening over the next few days! Love that David is attending the Invisible Children’s event….and performing! Would sure love to attend some of these great events. NA…Stanley Cup playoffs, excited about that too! I will actually get to see David on TV tomorrow, singing, what a treat…and Stanley Cup playoffs! Too many exclamation marks, lol.

Way back at the Rexburg COS book signing, I remember hearing about some Canadian fans who drove all the way to Idaho from Alberta to be first in line for the book signing. Here’s their story & video!!!!
So i drove to idaho all night long from canada (alberta) in order to be first in line for David’s book signing! i was successful and i waited in line for 9 hours and stayed awake for a total of 40 hours! ahaha it was a killer, but totally worth it. Oh and did i mention that his concert was two days after the book signing and i won backstage passes to hang with david and two tickets to his concert SECOND ROW MIDDLE SECTION?!?! it was pretty much the coolest experience ever 🙂 haha…. and p.s please excuse my reaction at the end, i couldn’t contain my joy! hah 🙂

I did not vote for David Archuleta OR David Cook on American Idol. Believe it or not, I didn’t WATCH American Idol. On February-April 2009, I heard “A Little Too Not Over You” on the Radio Disney. *Yes, I was bored enough to listen to Radio Disney* (That time i did not know what he looked like& I have never heard of him before) So the radio said “That was David Archuleta with A Little Too Not Over You” and the first time I heard it, something hit me. His voice just made me say WOW. Every time I heard it on the radio, I wouldn’t jump or anything like I do now, but I just smiled. I would grin and with that sudden happy rush feeling that you get when you get something totally unexpected. *You still don’t know what I mean? Umm.. how about like. that feeling when your cute crush asks you out? You feel it now?* That has never happened to me before. Especially since I don’t know how he looked like…or know who the heck he was! And if he wasn’t good looking or whatever, I would still love him so much! A few days later I decided to youtube it.
“Oh Looky!! A video!!” *watches the video* “HOLY CRAP he looks so fricken cute/handsome/ hot/*cough**cough*” Then like 2 days later, I went to that video again because I JUST COULDN’T STOP WATCHING THE AMAZING DIFFERENT EMOTIONAL VIDEO! So then I downloaded ALTNOY on April 21, 2009, and became a fan = me a freak after I watched some interviews and more live performances. I also read the comments while i was still on that video. One of the comments were “I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE DAVID ON AMERICAN IDOL TONIGHT!!” (Season 8 performing) Hmm.. I think I’m going to watch. So I watched him and I was like… omg!! HE’S GOOD!! and if you noticed, he had a cold that day I heard? I didn’t know!! THAT’S HOW GOOD HE IS!! 😀 When David sings live, (or even when he’s recording) it sounds like it’s the last minute of the world and he’s got one minute to show it all. I heard other live performances. I watched some interviews, wanted to know a little more about him. “WOAH….I’ve NEVER seen someone so sweet and humble and (what he is)” i just can’t explain it! There are not enough words in this world to describe how amazing David is. He made me become a better person. And even my parents can’t do as good as him! (no offense ^-^) He changed my life. And I’d like to thank him for changing my life. I know so many people that are faking it but he’s not. He gives ME live lessons. I always wondered if I would’ve become a fan if I’d only heard one of David’s songs on the radio (instead of catching him on Idol by chance) … guess the answer is yes! 🙂
yup I’ve wondered too TOfan if I would have been a fan hearing him first on the radio and not catching him BY CHANCE on AI – hubby was flipping through stations that fateful night when David sang Shop Around and I made him STOP and listen…

Well, dang….I didn’t get to see (or hear) David sing. I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone will have a video or it will be posted on the ‘Ducks’ site. Was really hoping that the previous game wouldn’t go in to O.T. cause I don’t get TSN2, oh well. Don’t know if they actually aired David singing or not? I know some fans heard it on broadcast radio, I didn’t have any luck though. Great twitter comments….of course he was outstanding!
