David Archuleta’s The Other Side of Down is finally here!

AP interview (see "Must See" sidebar) screencaps from Zully_FOD.

I don’t know what I’m doing here
How I landed in this space
But it’s a good place

Words to that effect have been running through my head for the past two-and-a-half years. And now that David’s new album is finally here, I find them running through my head yet again. And not just because, as he often does, David’s singing them in a song. His song. But because this album marks another milestone on David’s exhilarating path … and on ours in a way. He’s doing his thing as we do ours … cheering him on, cheering each other on … sharing stories, adventures, laughter and tears. Who knew we’d all still be here? Even David had his doubts! And why are we all still here? Because it is a good place.

And I don’t wanna mess it up
Make mistakes or say too much
‘Cause it’s a good place

It certainly didn’t start out that way for me. Like many others, I “discovered” David when I was in a very dark place. His voice, his joy then later the amazing people I met through becoming his fan were the bright lights that pulled me through. None of it made much sense at first, of course. But now it makes all the sense in the world … even when it doesn’t.

I’ve been going with the flow
Wherever that goes

And this album brings us to another stop on his mystery train. Bringing new questions, fresh answers, more pieces of the puzzle that is David Archuleta. For as open and honest and real as he is, he remains an enigma. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Would you?

You find it
You hold it
You feel its grace

At first I thought the over-arching theme of this album was, as David himself has said, to keep moving forward, move through the darkness till you get to the light. And although that theme is certainly front and centre in songs like TOSOD and TAGGB, there’s another, more urgent message there, for me personally anyway.

And that message is this: Grab this moment, THIS MOMENT, cherish it and don’t let go. Don’t live for what might happen tomorrow or what you might have had yesterday, but live, truly live for this day.

These are words I wanna say
Every hour of every day
These are words that say how good it feels
To be here with you today
I hope it’s not too late
Oh, yeah
I hope it’s not too late

Life is good, God is good, and you guys are great!!!!

{{{{hugs}}} & love to you all on this special day. And most of all, congratulations, David … and thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

TOfan

And one last question for you all: What special meaning does this album hold for you?

***************************************************

David Archuleta had a dream last week that really spooked him. He was singing at an outdoor event when, suddenly, the entire audience got up during the middle of his performance and walked out.

“It didn’t look like they hated it, or that I did something,” the 19-year-old singer recalls. “It just freaked me out. It was one of the creepiest dreams I’ve had. The fact that everyone left: Was I making any kind of impact on anyone?”

David hopes The Other Side of Down, out Tuesday, will make an impact. Concerned that his 2008 debut album revealed very little about him — other than that he could sing — he determined his follow-up would have a more personal touch.

“This album, it’s definitely more quirky,” David says. “It’s more of a lighthearted side of David than ever before. There are always different sides to people, but I wanted to show that light, fun, dorky side to me this time.”

There was just one problem: David was so worried that he wouldn’t have anything worth saying or that people wouldn’t find him very interesting that he practically paralyzed himself creatively.

One on level, The Other Side of Down is David’s fight through those fears. The album begins with a bunch of questions hanging over David’s head.

“There are so many to ask,” he says. “That’s the thing.

“Sometimes, I think the reason I get stuck is because I ask myself so many things, more than I can handle. I dig myself a hole, wondering what I should do, what’s going on. Sometimes, I need to stop over-thinking and just go for something.”

That hole that David sometimes digs himself into is central to the new album. Many of his fans heard the album’s title and thought, “That’s a clever way of saying, ‘Up’!” But for all the album’s self-described quirkiness and light-heartedness, the album finds David starting at Down — in that hole, beneath those questions — and hoping to reach that other side.

David eventually overcame that block, writing more than 50 songs with more than a dozen other writers during the year he spent working on The Other Side of Down. Along the way, he learned to embrace his “inner dork.”

“I know the kind of person I am,” he says. “I know how the world looks at impressive people and cool people and people who succeed. I do not fit that mold.

“So how am I supposed to be in a position where everyone’s looking at me? How am I going to make that positive impact and be impressive to people?

“I could try to be cool. A lot of artist get developed, get an image and get that whole mysterious persona. I can not do that. I could try, but I know that’s not me. One of the biggest things for me is to be honest with myself and real with other people. If I were to try to create an image that’s not who I am to look appealing to other people, I’d be so uncomfortable with that.

“It’s like I was fighting with myself: ‘David, you’re not cool! What if people don’t like who you are, because you’re not that image?’ Then I was like, ‘Not everyone’s going to like who you are, no matter what you do. Somebody’s always going to have a problem with you.’

“This is what I realized: What if there are other people out there who are like me? Who are wondering the same things as me, feeling the same way? I can relate to them!”

Buried in the middle of the ninth song on The Other Side of Down, there’s a key line: “I could be a memory tomorrow,” David sings in Good Place. “I could be nothing at all.” It’s the kind of lyric someone familiar with the career arcs of American Idol finalists might be expected to write, but, for David, the lines are about more than the possibility of peaking as a teen then returning to anonymity.

“That’s one of my biggest fears, to not mean anything,” David says. “I’m always afraid of being left behind.

“Even when I was in school, I didn’t want to be left behind. “It was, like, ‘Man, I wonder if these kids are even going to be remember me in a few years, when high school’s over? ‘Cause everybody goes their separate ways. Am I going to make an impact? Am I going to influence these kids, or am I just going to have been a kid who was at high school years ago?

“I want to be able to something meaningful, leave a lasting impression on people.

“The scariest thing for me, I guess, is being useless. It’s not like I want to be remembered, period. I want to be remembered for the right thing.”

Ah….such a beautiful and timely post TOfan. Just finished reveling in my Itunes OSOD download. I was so excited that my Itunes download was ready since I haven’t received any of my pre- ordered CDs yet, so this made my day!

After listening to everything again and to the new track, “Day After Tomorrow”…..my, what a gorgeous song and his voice, wow, could only think..David, you’ve done it again, just lovely!
Watching the behind the scenes video shoot, the photoshoot, the Q&A….it all left in in a little bit of awe….again.
After reading David’s liner notes, something really stood out to me and that was his comment about the fans and how he hopes that we can get something valuable out of this project and his music. Well David…you just have no idea.
Valuable…something important to you, something you treasure. I treasure David, I treasure his music and I treasure this album.
TOfan, loved what you said about cherishing the moment and that is exactly what David does and how he lives his life. It’s something I’ve always tried to be aware of and this wonderful, 19 yr old gently reminds me of that and I love that.
In fact, David’s album, his music does that precisely for me. I just immerse myself in the music, the flow of it, the feeling of it, in the voice and I can honestly say I feel renewed, in the moment.
All this from a kind hearted, extremely gifted young man of 19 yrs (and may I respectfully say..a beautiful specimen to top it off)!

What do I get from this album?….all of that and the joy in knowing that I can feel David’s joys, struggles, quirks, laughter, hopes, doubts, and his trust in his innermost feelings and his love of sharing them through his craft
Being a fan…it is definitely a good place to be!
A big congrats to David on his epic day (and ours)!

  2. abanana77 says:

    I still can’t believe it’s October 5th!

I told one of my friends (that I hadn’t talk too much to recently) about how David’s CD was coming out this week and her response to me was “Wow, you’re still into him? I never thought it would last this long.” I hadn’t really thought about it, but it’s true: it has been a while, hasn’t it? But of course I’m still here, and there’s no sign of me leaving anytime soon in the future. Nothing has filled my spirit and my heart as much as being a fan. Nothing has made me want to try my hardest and better myself more than my admiration for David. Nothing has helped me stand up for myself and follow my heart more than watching David do the same. No way am I going anywhere, where we’re at is a pretty good place.

Every album David does is special in it’s own way. I (of course) love his input on this one and all the positive messages but that’s not why this one is the MOST special for me right now. 2 years ago when the debut album came out, I was a giant lurker on the internet. Even CFTH too. But now I feel like I’ve made “friends” (if you guys will call me a friend :P) even though I have never met any of you and it is very special to share this album release with a group of people who appreciate it as much as you do. <33333333333

{{{hugs}}} You guys are the best!

  3. Kizzi says:

TOfan – such a warm and wonderful review. It is indeed “A Good Place.”

Still can’t get over your ‘Elevator’ version. Kudos to you!

    Hugs to all SAz’s 🙂

  4. betsy says:

    TOfan,
Beautiful, just beautiful. I have no words right now.

  5. awestruck says:

This, TOfan, sparks that feeling of being in a Good Place – right here, right now. If I had to pick just one feeling right now that sums it up perfectly.

From your perspective, TOfan, and TOSOD to the interview you posted at the bottom (Brian Mansfield) through the AP and MTV interviews I am stunned at the level of maturity and inner confidence I am witnessing that David is presenting to us at this moment in time.

What does this ALL mean to me now? – well, like Betsy – I have no words that would adequately describe it.

  6. embe says:

    TOfan ❤ ❤

If I wasn't so tired I'd attempt to write something that does justice to David (not that I'm capable). Since I'm exhausted now and in advance 'cause tomorrow is a looooooooooong day for me I'll just say this:

No matter how lousy I feel right now, thinking about David's excitement and smiling face listening to all the praise he's bound to get for creating the masterpiece that is The Other Side Of Down, it makes me so happy and peaceful to know that at least something is right in the world. Thank you, David, for everything you are.

  7. archiesfan4life says:

TOfan – thank you! Thank you for your ability to put into beautiful and thoughtful words what I feel in my heart. What a wonderful and momentous day it is – for David and for all of us!

    Like others have said in their comments I have no words to express what this CD means to me – I am overwhelmed at what I am learning from this young man and also how much it means to me to be a part of this fan community – {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

  8. refnaf says:

“this album marks another milestone on David’s exhilarating path … and on ours in a way. He’s doing his thing as we do ours … cheering him on, cheering each other on … sharing stories, adventures, laughter and tears. Who knew we’d all still be here? Even David had his doubts! And why are we all still here? Because it is a good place”

((((Tofan))))) it IS such a good place. This cd means more than I can say. I am bursting with pride in David, so thrilled that he could put himself in this cd. Every lyric and note and melody speaks to me in different ways. Having the Voice singing such encouraging and uplifting lyrics, to know that I can have that lift whenever I need it, well, I am verklept…… I LOVE IT!!

Snowangelz has become my “Good Place” in the archu-fan-universe. Thanks to all of you guys…

I had issues this morning getting it downloaded, but I have it now and I went to HMV and got a few hardcopies as well, feels so good to have an actual cd in my hands! >no idea where my fanpack is 😦

What a great day, David we adore all that you are!!!

  9. jackryan4DA says:

Hi everyone! Hope you all got your TOSOD albums by now 🙂

MTV interview in YT – I put the 3-part vid into 1 file for easier viewing:

  10. jackryan4DA says:

Then I split the AP Live! Interview into 2 segments and took out the distracting ticker tape at the bottom of the screen – LOL

    PART 1

    PART 2

Mr Archuleta – you are form & substance – lethal!

  11. SandyBeaches says:

What was the SnowAngelz question that he answered today? Something about a tshirt and he thought that it was smart is all that I could understand, There was a delay in the recording at that time.

    • TOfan says:

There were 2 Canada shoutouts! Near the beginning, they read Pastel’s comment that said “From CANADA!” & they both laughed, and then “I downloaded your album & love it” and D. looked into the camera and said, “aww thanks, glad you like it!’

Mine was in response to the DJ saying we should send in Halloween costume ideas. So I suggested he could wear a T-shirt that read “Go ceilings!” (to be a “ceiling fan” lolol) … I know someone who actually did that & thought it was hiLARious.

      • SandyBeaches says:

He is pretty good at noticing/recognizing SnowAngelz. That was great to have two comments from him today. I really didn’t get the ‘ceilings fan’ (he seemed to get it !) I could only think of ‘sealing fan’ heaven forbid.

I wonder what the questions will be like when he is ’20’? A lot of them sure are young type of questions but that is where the imaginations are.

        SB

      • Kizzi says:

TOfan – I’m watching the z100 chat and heard the tee shirt celling “fan” from snowangelz -brilliant – BAHAHAHAHAHAHA…love it. And David says “I like that one” *BIG SMILE* wooooaaaaahhh!

  12. TOfan says:

peppertara, abanana, embe, kizzi, awestruck, archiesfan4life, betsy, JR & ref {{{{hugs}}}} today’s been such a blur of excitement, I’m only now reading through your great comments … love hearing what this album’s meant to others, because as much as we all are so happy it’s here and have that in common, I know it’ll mean something unique to each person when it’s just you & the music. So thanks for sharing that, you guys!

Seeing David bop from AP to Zang to Z100 to Billboard fielding questions like a pro, has me a-bursting with pride! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Yes, The Voice (singer) found his voice (conversationalist). WOWZA! hmmmm…..and double hmmmm…unquestionably deep thinker and one day he will realize that we know he is special b/c he “thinks” he is normal, so NOT!! 😀

I’m just catching up with all the goodies that rolled out today. It’s like the bakery exploded with every delicacy, unexpected at that.

Wow, what a whirlwind day for David and wasn’t he incredible! Loved his interviews….still trying to catch up on everything. I am so impressed with David’s interviews, Q&A chats, etc. Beyond all his self proclaimed dorkiness there is a very mature, profound young man in there who knows what he is doing. He amazes me!
I am so happy for David, what a day. Have been listening to his album every spare moment today.
And….Holy sweet guacamole! That version of Elevator at Z100 was outstanding! If a lot of Z100 listeners weren’t enticed by that to run out and buy his album….well, don’t know how they could not.
Loved the two Canadian shout outs! The tshirt comment and “ceiling fan” TOfan was pretty hilarious!
Well, I hope that David’s album does well. It’s a given that his fans will be buying it, let’s hope some new fans will too.
Feeling so very proud of David. 🙂

  22. abanana77 says:

Ahhhhhhhh! So I left my house this morning at 8:30 and I JUST got home (1:15am). What a terrible day for studying all day, when all I wanted to do is come back here and flail with you all about TOSOD. I tried to check in periodically on my ipod (in class, lol :P) but I definitely have some serious catching up to do. But anyways, to the point of my story. Me and my friend had finally given up on working on it tonight so I finally came home and guess what was waiting for me?!!! MY FAN PACK! 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 Such a nice way to end a really long day 🙂

  23. abanana77 says:

Also is it true that #othersideofdown trended in Canada? Amazing.

  24. peppertara says:

abanana….if #othersideofdown trended in Canada, that would be pretty wonderful!
So happy for you that your Fan Pack arrived!! Think mine did too but I missed it, being at work. Hopefully I will have it in my hands tomorrow.

Just checked Canadian Itunes and David’s album is no. 18 in top albums, yay!

I am wishing dear David sweet dreams….no more dreams of audiences walking out half way through concerts David. Much to celebrate these days. ❤

  25. abanana77 says:

Watched the z100 elevator! Amazing. You know what blows my mind about it? Other than his epic vocals? The way he just goes from being the ridiculously soulful David doing all the runs to the goofy teenage “all right *giggle* so there’s elevator for you guys.” in like one second.

Need to go back to school now. Sad I am going to miss Regis and Kelly 😦

peppertara – I think it trended. TOfan tweeted something that made it sound like that. Haha

  26. refnaf says:

Is everyone on the other side of down??? I am> an amazing album release day!!!
    So happy 🙂
#othersideofdown did trend at #3 in Canada for a bit!!!!! Pretty cool to see, not sure if there is a screencap somewhere…..

Happy for all of you that got your fanpacks, boo> mine has not been shipped yet,,,, waaaa

for now I am basking in the z100 Elevator
    ^^^^^^^^
    It goes waaaay up!

  27. TOfan says:

peppertara, me too, so proud of our guy, yesterday was a banner day … and with so much more to come, I’m going to have to start taking B12 to keep up with him! 😆 And there were a bunch of Canada shout-outs, a couple from Pastel & the Z100 dj mentioned Vancouver! Wooot!

abanana!!!! Yay 4 your fanpack arriving!!! (I’m still waiting, but was thrilled to watch the iTunes behind-the-scenes vids … love to know how they talked him into wearing those jodphur riding pants! bahahaha)

And yes #othersideofdown trended in Canada for quite a while, wish I’d done a screencap but there was so much else to keep up with, my head was spinning.

And I loved how he ended that Z100 Elevator too … from that smile on his face, methinks he knew that he unleashed a pretty spectacular performance and was glancing around to make sure everyone was still standing! 😆

oh, and there’s a short audio clip of David talking about what his fans tell him, HERE.

  28. TOfan says:

So apparently he sang Falling Stars on Regis & Kelly but they cut him off mid-song! :((((

  33. SandyBeaches says:

So because we in Canada go to see him, he really is planning on coming to see us. I think he really has noticed all the people from Canada ‘coming across the border’ as he said!! SnowAngelz, you have been doing your homework and I am certain that he has noticed.

    SB

  34. peppertara says:

Oh I really hope that David’s ‘people’ allow him to include a couple of Canadian cities on next tour. He’s due! They gotta know he has lots of fans here, fingers crossed.
David was fabulous on Regis & Kelly, think that should attract some new fans too.
Enjoyed watching David on the FB livestream tonight. Loved his little bits of random singing and he mentioned he’s been doing some Spanish songwriting I think, wonderful! Lots of questions from young fans obviously, enjoying themselves!

So good to have the CDs in my hands now, the fan pk, extras that I ordered, all good.
Gosh, been hard keeping up with everything he’s doing these days but I’m definitely on the OSOD and enjoying it and I think David is too!

  35. TOfan says:

    I heard that SB!

All our kilometres logged will be well worth it if he squeezes in some Canadian stops on his next tour.

Sounds like David’s all for it, just has to convince his “team” …. should we send butter tarts down there? 😆

Peppertara, I’m with you in having a hard time keeping up….I need to see everythin multiple times…. CAN NOT MISS A THING

Wow, that BYI interview is long, gah, I am behind again, will watch later.

    off to work……——————-
