David Archuleta’s gentle kindness, support to charities and soulful caring, reminds us of the capabilities of our own kindness, which in turn can affect everyone on the planet. When I first started learning of David’s charity work and kind gestures to fans and others, it brought to mind a book called Pay It Forward.
It was written after the author experienced a traumatic night in a secluded spot, where mechanical trouble brought her late model car to a stop, leaving her stranded and scared. Two people came running towards her waving a blanket and she thought they were going to cause her harm. When they reached her, she saw they were running to put out the flames from underneath the hood of her car – a gesture that likely saved her life.
She was overwhelmed by the kindness of the passersby and this feeling of gratitude inspired her to return the kindness any way she could. She began to realize that even small acts of kindness can have a great affect on people, and when we “pay them forward,” the idea multiplies to more and more people, touching their lives either directly or indirectly.
In the beginning
Reading that book took me back to cherished stories about my grandfather — of how he once gave away his paycheque to a homeless family on the street just before Christmas. He then came home from his job to his family of eight without a penny. He told us more than once about how much trouble he got into with my grandmother that Christmas. Sometimes giving costs dearly, but it was imprinted in our memories to care about other people.
These stories must have stuck with me more than I realized. For, I hadn’t planned to “pay it forward” with concert tickets, but when illness prevented me from using my tickets to Virginia Beach to see David at his first ever solo tour concert, it felt like the right thing to do. I contacted a David admirer with the screen name of Kizzi, knowing that she would be attending his first concert. And this is where my ticket gifting began. I wrote back and forth with Kizzi and communicated by fax and phone until we had the Box A, seats 1&2 tickets in the hands of two girls Kizzi had met outside the venue. The girls were absolutely thrilled.
The art of VIP gifting
For the September Manchester concert, I happened to have an extra VIP ticket with me. I was standing in line with my David friends when a young mother came up to our line and stated that it was really early to be in line. When she heard that it was the VIP line she excitedly said that she had never met David and would love to do so. Well, that was it, my VIP was in the process of being gifted right there in line. She shook with excitement and disbelief.
Just minutes after we entered the VIP room, my name was drawn to ask David a question. Everyone said, wow, the gift that keeps on giving. I enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to speak with David and he sang for me “Ave” from Ave Maria, before Ray interrupted him, but David continued our conversation. This was even before the Christmas tour, so to hear anything from Ave Maria made me happy.

If you could put all of David’s concerts together, you would create the first awesome, Christmas From the Heart concert at Abravenal Hall. Several days before the concert, I was contacted by an administrator from SnowAngelz to ask if I might like to gift my extra VIP to a young lady who was the second winner in a contest at Snarky Archies, (open to fans who had been inspired by, but had never met, David).
Arrangements were made to meet the young lady at Abravanel Hall and it was there that I met her with her mother and younger sister. We had a wonderful time together at a lovely VIP. I thoroughly enjoyed her company as we bridged the gap of many years between us by sharing our passion for David’s beautiful voice and stage presence. The next evening she left her family to sit with me, as I was alone and had an empty seat beside me. We sat close to some very special people in David’s life.
Homeward bound
I have one last gifting story that did not cost a penny and I love it. On my way home from Salt Lake City, we changed planes in Chicago and could not go on further to Halifax. We were rerouted to Ottawa for the night. A lady sat down next to me on the plane. She had been with a friend shopping in Las Vegas. The lady asked about my trip and upon hearing that I was at a concert, she mentioned her family’s involvement in choirs in Ottawa and made mention of her musical interests, extended education and favourite opera singers.
After we talked, I put my iPod earbuds in place and settled in for a few, uninterrupted hours of private time with music and SLC memories. As we were landing, the woman passed her serviette to me with a pen and asked me to write the name of the young man who she could hear on my iPod. She also wanted me to write a few of the Christmas songs on the serviette so that she could go right away to YouTube.
My inspiration for ticket gifting and reaching out to those around us has been renewed by David and from the good people who keep in his company. Each time that I hear David sing, it is a gift to me and to everyone. In turn, we tell people who we meet on the street, people we sit next to on airplanes, taxi drivers, and people on elevators just how enjoyable and inspirational David is. Then they, in turn, tell people and the joys of David’s music continue to be shared … to be paid and repaid forward.

I got my CFTH tour CD in the mail yesterday from Abrra and Knotsliser. It made me take a moment to think of all the truly kind, good-hearted, generous people so many of David’s fans are. It has amazed me quite a few times over the past year and a half. I think someone like David attracts good people but he also impacts them for good too. I saw Wicked in Cleveland the next day after my concert and it really affected me. People come into our lives for a reason.
SB – I wonder if your Grandfather was inspired by someone in his life? Thanks for sharing your stories, so poignant.

We’ve all been inspired by David in one way or another, but as Angelica pointed out, there are so many “Davids” in our lives (in the fandom and beyond) who are more concerned with what they can “give” rather than what they can “get.”

I should have mentioned in the article, that I had been gifted a ticket which was greatly appreciated. I was given the chance to have a VIP for the concert in Westbury and I was so excited when I received an email that one had become available.

SB – I really just loved your story. I too had the pleasure of gifting two tickets at Foxwoods. They weren’t great seats, but I was able to give it to someone who wouldn’t have been able to go otherwise.

Tofan – you have the wonderful ability of convincing people to tell their story. For me, expressing my feelings and emotions in a clear and concise way has always been difficult – it’s not that I am a private person, but I always felt that explaining my feelings in writing, diminished and didn’t capture what I was truly trying to say. What I realized later, was how cathartic it felt and how wonderful it was to share those feelings with people…so Tofan, thank you, again.
ninaf…It is so true that trying to express what you are experiencing in writing is difficult when one cannot find the perfect words and expressions you would like to have.
When I read some articles I say…wow that is it, that is what I would like to say, bravo to the writer! Oh and there are some awesome writers here.

Thank you Tofan for giving us the Rankin video. They are truly a wonderful Celtic family. Of course there is tragedy with the family. The oldest brother died in a car accident a few years ago now. He was taking some boys to a hockey game and his tire hit a big mound of salt that had been dropped by a salt truck on the icy road. He went over a rocky embankment and ended up either in the water or near to it. He told the boys how to get out and then he was gone. John was the figure head of the group, writer and pianist. It was nearly impossible for them to go on without him.
I had some of the lines inscripted on my parents headstone and the whole town went to read it. Most people write little and this was quite different. Now smile a David smile, I don’t want to be sombre…

Off topic, but I was just at the music store. I am happy to report that CFTH is being sold at the new release Pop section here instead of at the Christmas music section. It’s the only Christmas CD at the pop section, and, days after Christmas, they are still on the shelf. No other Christmas CD’s are in sight. 🙂

It has been a memorable year and as I have mentioned before, we have been blessed. I told that to David in Westbury. We have come from our everyday lives from all over Canada and the US to get together as friends and to listen to David sing in so many beautiful places.
I am so pleased that we saw you just before Christmas on that snowy night in Westbury and that we could give you a Christmas hug. Your Prayer to David has been special to me, as it continues to convey our warmest thoughts to David during his travels.
You have been the best roomate and friend. I send my love and Happy New Year wishes to you and your sis.

I was there with you. The other part of this touching story is about the woman’s 2 girls, ages 12 and 9. She knew that seeing David in VIP would mean that the girls had to be left alone in the lobby. The whole time she was in line with us , she was stressing about their safety. The building was a large glass open space.She kept her eye on them until we went into the room for M&G. It turned out to be over an hours wait. Security allowed her to go out to the gilrs and check on them They were ok, just bored from standing and waiting.
For me this drama was a modern day “Sophie’s Choice”. As hard as it was to let them wait , she wanted so badly to have this chance to meet David for the first time. Inside the VIp she could not wait any longer for David, so she decided to go back to be with the girls.
Just then DAVID came running in the room! She got her wish and left quickly!

David has inspired many of us and recently when I was participating in a business forum, the discussion came up about giving back. I usually limit my David fanaticism to “David blogs”, but this time I said, to heck with it. I posted the link to David’s Prayer of the Children with his introductory remarks from Cleveland (I think?) and told of how this young man inspired so many that his fans even started their own charity.
There were many nice comments including “that boy can sing!!” Yeah, we knew that 🙂

I just heard a CBC radio interview with Michael Buble this morning where he talked about recording his latest album the old-fashioned way … singing live with a band and recording the session “organically,” in the studio, instead of with voice and instruments on separate tracks, so it wouldn’t be too “slick.”
If that’s a new direction for recording, wouldn’t that be a very “David-friendly” approach down the line? *squee*

SF, I love your list of rock classics and not too hard to imagine David singing any of them. Why is that?
On a lighter note…when mention is made of singers such as Michael Buble or just about anyone trying a different style of recording, I have to wonder, “Have they heard David and how much his music is loved and are they deciding to try to copy him?” I know that is a crazy thought, but it goes through my mind….

Don’t think it’s so much that artists are “copying” him, but it seems a lot of them are growing weary (as are we) with the overproduced dreck heard on Top 40 radio these days.

Tofan I know that artists aren’t copying him, they have their own styles and agendas but maybe someday they just might…It was just a fleeting thought.
Do you like Michael Buble? I want to, but I can’t get in to what groove he is in. I just find his personality too quirky to become an admirer…In honesty, what makes him so famous? Maybe I am missing something. I know, he is doing wonderfully well.
