Paying it forward

“When we pay forward, the idea multiplies to more and more people, touching their lives directly or indirectly.
— Catherine Ryan Hyde
, Pay It Forward

David Archuleta’s gentle kindness, support to charities and soulful caring, reminds us of the capabilities of our own kindness, which in turn can affect everyone on the planet. When I first started learning of David’s charity work and kind gestures to fans and others, it brought to mind a book called Pay It Forward.

It was written after the author experienced a traumatic night in a secluded spot, where mechanical trouble brought her late model car to a stop, leaving her stranded and scared. Two people came running towards her waving a blanket and she thought they were going to cause her harm. When they reached her, she saw they were running to put out the flames from underneath the hood of her car – a gesture that likely saved her life.

She was overwhelmed by the kindness of the passersby and this feeling of gratitude inspired her to return the kindness any way she could. She began to realize that even small acts of kindness can have a great affect on people, and when we “pay them forward,” the idea multiplies to more and more people, touching their lives either directly or indirectly.

In the beginning

Reading that book took me back to cherished stories about my grandfather — of how he once gave away his paycheque to a homeless family on the street just before Christmas.  He then came home from his job to his family of eight without a penny.  He told us more than once about how much trouble he got into with my grandmother that Christmas. Sometimes giving costs dearly, but it was imprinted in our memories to care about other people.

These stories must have stuck with me more than I realized. For, I hadn’t planned to “pay it forward” with concert tickets, but when illness prevented me from using my tickets to Virginia Beach to see David at his first ever solo tour concert, it felt like the right thing to do. I contacted a David admirer with the screen name of Kizzi, knowing that she would be attending his first concert. And this is where my ticket gifting began. I wrote back and forth with Kizzi and communicated by fax and phone until we had the Box A, seats 1&2 tickets in the hands of two girls Kizzi had met outside the venue. The girls were absolutely thrilled.

The art of VIP gifting

For the September Manchester concert, I happened to have an extra VIP ticket with me.  I was standing in line with my David friends when a young mother came up to our line and stated that it was really early to be in line.  When she heard that it was the VIP line she excitedly said that she had never met David and would love to do so.  Well, that was it, my VIP was in the process of being gifted right there in line. She shook with excitement and disbelief.

Just minutes after we entered the VIP room, my name was drawn to ask David a question.  Everyone said, wow, the gift that keeps on giving. I enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to speak with David and he sang for me “Ave” from Ave Maria, before Ray interrupted him, but David continued our conversation. This was even before the Christmas tour, so to hear anything from Ave Maria made me happy.

Salt Lake City spirit

If you could put all of David’s concerts together, you would create the first awesome, Christmas From the Heart concert at Abravenal Hall. Several days before the concert, I was contacted by an administrator from SnowAngelz to ask if I might like to gift my extra VIP to a young lady who was the second winner in a contest at Snarky Archies, (open to fans who had been inspired by, but had never met, David).

Arrangements were made to meet the young lady at Abravanel Hall and it was there that I met her with her mother and younger sister. We had a wonderful time together at a lovely VIP. I thoroughly enjoyed her company as we bridged the gap of many years between us by sharing our passion for David’s beautiful voice and stage presence. The next evening she left her family to sit with me, as I was alone and had an empty seat beside me.  We sat close to some very special people in David’s life.

Homeward bound

I have one last gifting story that did not cost a penny and I love it. On my way home from Salt Lake City, we changed planes in Chicago and could not go on further to Halifax. We were rerouted to Ottawa for the night.  A lady sat down next to me on the plane. She had been with a friend shopping in Las Vegas. The lady asked about my trip and upon hearing that I was at a concert, she mentioned her family’s involvement in choirs in Ottawa and made mention of her musical interests, extended education and favourite opera singers.

After we talked, I put my iPod earbuds in place and settled in for a few, uninterrupted hours of private time with music and SLC memories.  As we were landing, the woman passed her serviette to me with a pen and asked me to write the name of the young man who she could hear on my iPod. She also wanted me to write a few of the Christmas songs on the serviette so that she could go right away to YouTube.

My inspiration for ticket gifting and reaching out to those around us has been renewed by David and from the good people who keep in his company. Each time that I hear David sing, it is a gift to me and to everyone. In turn, we tell people who we meet on the street, people we sit next to on airplanes, taxi drivers, and people on elevators just how enjoyable and inspirational David is. Then they, in turn, tell people and the joys of David’s music continue to be shared … to be paid and repaid forward.

Best wishes to David on his 19th birthday, and to all of you for a peaceful, healthful, music-filled New Year!

SB **waves** This is beautiful, the stories and the way you share them! What a man your grandfather was!
David really does make us do good in so many big and small ways. Inspirational, by “just” singing and being true to himself.

  2. renaid says:

Beautiful stories, SB. Thanks for sharing and reminding us of the “small’ things we can do to make this a better world.

  3. Angelica says:

SandyBeaches – I really enjoyed reading your article. Your grandfather sounds like a wonderful person and what a great story and lesson he taught! I loved reading about the reaction of people who were gifted VIPs from you.

I got my CFTH tour CD in the mail yesterday from Abrra and Knotsliser. It made me take a moment to think of all the truly kind, good-hearted, generous people so many of David’s fans are. It has amazed me quite a few times over the past year and a half. I think someone like David attracts good people but he also impacts them for good too. I saw Wicked in Cleveland the next day after my concert and it really affected me. People come into our lives for a reason.

  4. awestruck says:

SB – I wonder if your Grandfather was inspired by someone in his life? Thanks for sharing your stories, so poignant.

  5. TOfan says:

    SB,
I love so many things about your post. The story of the book Paying it Forward, your VIP and family experiences, and your final encounter on the airplane. On the edge of my seat the whole way!

Thanks also for the shout out to Kizzi, a most kind, generous person who would probably cringe at the shout out since she prefers to remain a stealth “Angel”! 😆

We’ve all been inspired by David in one way or another, but as Angelica pointed out, there are so many “Davids” in our lives (in the fandom and beyond) who are more concerned with what they can “give” rather than what they can “get.”

Your grandfather was one beautiful example and you are clearly another. Thank you so much for sharing your tales.

  6. janey79 says:

experiencing David first hand is one thing…sharing him is a whole other level.

i have the privilege of knowing many D-fans who gift tix and vips regularly. their names are under the fandom radar but I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. they are the unsung heroes who make dreams come true for countless new and veteran fans.

    i heart them all.

  7. TOfan says:

And we ❤ you, Janey (aka unsung hero yourself!)

And for the record, SB also wanted to remain under the radar until I cajoled her into telling her story … for me, these shared stories are one of the most heartwarming benefits of being a David fan.

  8. SandyBeaches says:

Angelica…after I read your comment, I just realized how much my grandfather was like David in his warmth and compassion, love of music and his spirituality. It is rather odd how I just realized that by what you wrote about him.

awestruck…I am curious now to know who influenced my grandfather, so thank you for posing the question to me.

I should have mentioned in the article, that I had been gifted a ticket which was greatly appreciated. I was given the chance to have a VIP for the concert in Westbury and I was so excited when I received an email that one had become available.

The gifting of David’s concert tickets has been taking place worldwide as the excitement of attending one of his concerts has no boundaries.

Cheers to all who have given and who have received that special ticket!

    SB

  9. ninaf says:

SB – I really just loved your story. I too had the pleasure of gifting two tickets at Foxwoods. They weren’t great seats, but I was able to give it to someone who wouldn’t have been able to go otherwise.

    OFF TOPIC-
Tofan – you have the wonderful ability of convincing people to tell their story. For me, expressing my feelings and emotions in a clear and concise way has always been difficult – it’s not that I am a private person, but I always felt that explaining my feelings in writing, diminished and didn’t capture what I was truly trying to say. What I realized later, was how cathartic it felt and how wonderful it was to share those feelings with people…so Tofan, thank you, again.

  10. SandyBeaches says:

ninaf…It is so true that trying to express what you are experiencing in writing is difficult when one cannot find the perfect words and expressions you would like to have.

When I read some articles I say…wow that is it, that is what I would like to say, bravo to the writer! Oh and there are some awesome writers here.

    SB

  11. awestruck says:

ninaf – when trying to write about what I experience with David I too feel “how cathartic it felt and how wonderful it was to share those feelings with people”

Tofan, thank you, again from me too.

SB I consider your writing inspirational. Each of us has a unique way of expressing what it is we feel and this gives me a different perspective. So thanks for sharing.

  12. TOfan says:

No need to thank me, guys. One of my favourite things about this whole David-fan adventure (besides David, lol) has been meeting so many fascinating people (online and in person) and hearing their stories … your stories … so thank YOU for sharing! 🙂

Off-topic, a tour highlight vid from ArchuletaPhilippines:

Update: Brut Sun Bowl airs Dec. 31st on CBS from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET. From Twitter:
@ElPaso411: For those asking: David Archuleta’s performance at the Brut Sun Bowl will be televised; only one song will air on CBS. (He will sing 3-5 songs.)

  13. djafan says:

SandyBeaches…. I enjoyed reading your article and all the details. I’d love to see the faces on the people you gifted. Interesting detail about your grandfather. Did anyone ever tell you you’re like your grandfather? The first time I heard about one of your gifted tickets was in Del Mar. You made one happy camper.

  14. bebereader says:

SB: The apple didn’t fall far from the tree, from your grandfather to you! If we’re lucky enough, we grow up with family or other role models who leave a lasting impression on us and one day we wind up emulating them without even realizing it.

SandyBeaches, you and your writing are an inspiration to me!

  15. SandyBeaches says:

djafan…I remember Del Mar and the concert I missed, but all was not lost when the tickets could be used and we had a great recap later! Actually from that ticket came one for me later…We have all had a lot of fun.

Bebe…Yes, our grandfather has been a wonderful inspiration and I am just realizing that now. I was trying to think of something peculiar to add about the apple falling not far from the tree but we are talking about my grandfather so I shouldn’t!

I have always loved this exerpt from a Rankin Family song:

We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
    and then we rise again…

    SB

  16. Angelica says:

    SB,

We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again like the waves out on the ocean
    and then we rise again…

Oh my gosh. That is beautiful.

  17. TOfan says:

    SB, LOVE the Rankins!

  18. bebereader says:

SB! TOfan! Angelica! dja! and so many others

I wonder why this is the first I’ve heard of The Rankins and their beautiful song, “Rise Again”?

I’m beginning to think that “someone” hand picked us and deliberately placed us all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.

    Lyrics to “Rise Again”

    “Rise Again”
    by Leon Dubinsky

When the waves roll on over the waters
    And the ocean cries
We look to our sons and daughters
    To explain our lives
As if a child could tell us why

That as sure as the sunrise
    As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
    And then we rise again

When the light goes dark with the forces of creation
    Across a stormy sky
We look to reincarnation to explain our lives
As if a child could tell us why

That as sure as the sunrise
    As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
    And then we rise again

We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
    And then we rise again
    And then we rise again…….

  19. TOfan says:

    Bebereader,
SB could probably tell you more about The Rankin Family, 5 singing siblings from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, a hot-bed of Celtic-influenced music. Beautiful songs and harmonies.

Love your idea “that ‘someone’ hand picked us and deliberately placed us all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.”

Off topic: acc. to this blog, David’s 1st CD ranked #59 on Billboard’s end of the year Top 200. Woot!:

  20. awestruck says:

For a while I had stopped listening to music – and this last year and a half I realize what I have been missing. I used to listen to the Rankins all the time. Brings back good memories. Thanks to all who have shared some of their favorite songs and re-introduced me to them.

TOfan – woo hoo for David at #59!

  21. refnaf says:

    okay, that song….

‘That as sure as the sunrise
    As sure as the sea
As sure as the wind in the trees
We rise again in the faces of our children
We rise again in the voices of our song
We rise again in the waves out on the ocean
    And then we rise again”
thanks for making me tear up…. in a good way… makes waiting for gbaby even more special!

Awestruck, so glad David helped you find music back!! I really want to see you again soon!!! Next tour?? we must make it happen.

and bebe. this “that ’someone’ hand picked us and deliberately placed us all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.”

Do you guys all know what a wonderful place this is to come to after a day at work???!!!
    **sniff**

Love seeing all the peeps dropping by…
hey. renaid, janey, nina, angelica, bebe ,dja… and SB thanks again for this post!

  22. refnaf says:

yikes, and David #59 on Billbaord year end list???!!! yeah!!!

  23. SandyBeaches says:

Thank you Tofan for giving us the Rankin video. They are truly a wonderful Celtic family. Of course there is tragedy with the family. The oldest brother died in a car accident a few years ago now. He was taking some boys to a hockey game and his tire hit a big mound of salt that had been dropped by a salt truck on the icy road. He went over a rocky embankment and ended up either in the water or near to it. He told the boys how to get out and then he was gone. John was the figure head of the group, writer and pianist. It was nearly impossible for them to go on without him.

I had some of the lines inscripted on my parents headstone and the whole town went to read it. Most people write little and this was quite different. Now smile a David smile, I don’t want to be sombre…

I am so pleased to see that you enjoy their song!

Angelica, the video looks like one that you would do…it is beautiful.

I think that David could easily sing this song…

awestruck…like you David has brought music back to me after years of just being sidetracked…

David will have a great time tomorrow…and I have been reading about the occassion he will be having with Jordin Sparks…wow.

There is a hand that brings people together and we are so fortunate to be part of it all.

AND I am dying to meet as many eastern fans as I can. Am plotting in my little brain – thinking that next tour I will leave hubby at home??? and venture east to make it happen.

SB – Fare Thee Well Love was my ABSOULUTE Rankin fav! Sad to hear the tradegy about the family.

Bebe – Yes to `I’m beginning to think that “someone” hand picked us and deliberately placed us all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.

Checking in from Tokyo. Great post SB!
Off topic, but I was just at the music store. I am happy to report that CFTH is being sold at the new release Pop section here instead of at the Christmas music section. It’s the only Christmas CD at the pop section, and, days after Christmas, they are still on the shelf. No other Christmas CD’s are in sight. 🙂

  28. yjfanofdavid says:

Bebe and Awekstruck: Echoing the sentiment: “I’m beginning to think that ‘someone’ hand picked us and deliberately placed us all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.”

Hello Tokyo YJ! This is so cool…”It’s the only Christmas CD at the pop section, and, days after Christmas, they are still on the shelf. No other Christmas CD’s are in sight.”

    That is really interesting, seriously.

I love his new vlog…He had a little lip quiver when he mentioned the tour being over. I laughed when he coughed and then quickly added to not worry, he is not sick. Oh, I guess he has heard quite well that we worry about him!..

Thank you to everyone who has commented on the above article, it was a pleasure to remember the events.

    refnaf…any news for us today?

    Happy New Year everyone!

awestruck, maybe he will do a little something in SLC??? I can not imagine that he will have no performances till a fall tour>Love to meet up there again!!!

Bebe, I continue to think about the sentiment of us “being hand picked and deliberately placed all here together on David’s red carpet so that we could teach and inspire each other and learn from one another.” My entire life has been expanded and it has been so good for me….I am so inspired by the friends I have met, and certainly it’s not by coincidence. I believe I got just what I needed, and am still receiving…

His vlogs make me happy ***smiling***

No news yet today!!!! New Year’s babe FTW!!!!

  31. yjfanofdavid says:

Refnaf, Your grandbaby certainly knows how to make a grand entry!

I am wondering the streets in Tokyo with David singing in my ears through the ipod. David’s voice provides comfort and familiarity, at the same time sharpens everything I see and experience as a stranger in a strange land. This is how I would travel from now on!

    • SandyBeaches says:

YJ…You have it, the ipod and all. That is how I have been travelling for awhile myself…makes life more easy and enjoyable at times….puts a smile on one’s face!

    Off-topic (again):

Coincidence? … um, ya, okay, probs

I was there with you. The other part of this touching story is about the woman’s 2 girls, ages 12 and 9. She knew that seeing David in VIP would mean that the girls had to be left alone in the lobby. The whole time she was in line with us , she was stressing about their safety. The building was a large glass open space. She kept her eye on them until we went into the room for M&G. It turned out to be over an hours wait. Security allowed her to go out to the gilrs and check on them They were ok, just bored from standing and waiting.
For me this drama was a modern day “Sophie’s Choice”. As hard as it was to let them wait , she wanted so badly to have this chance to meet David for the first time. Inside the VIp she could not wait any longer for David, so she decided to go back to be with the girls.

Just then DAVID came running in the room! She got her wish and left quickly!

SB: I love your stories – and your grandfather sounds like someone very special. I agree that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

David has inspired many of us and recently when I was participating in a business forum, the discussion came up about giving back. I usually limit my David fanaticism to “David blogs”, but this time I said, to heck with it. I posted the link to David’s Prayer of the Children with his introductory remarks from Cleveland (I think?) and told of how this young man inspired so many that his fans even started their own charity.

There were many nice comments including “that boy can sing!!” Yeah, we knew that 🙂

On another note, please stop by and vote in the 2nd Annual Archie Awards, and enjoy the walk down memory lane – there are links to a ton of videos and some “hawt” pictures to start off the new year. http://www.thedavidchronicles.com/2010/01/2nd-annual-archie-awards/

Snickered at first hearing David sing the lines:
A singer in a smoky room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

then remembered Northern Lights, Crocodile Rock, the now legendary Sayreville Starland Ballroom and the rest … he’s now been there & can sing that … as have I hahaha!

Love, love love the WFTWTC from way back in 2008. Just a glimpse of what we had in store and proof that David could indeed sing anything, any genre, and as we heard on his CFTH cd, any language he sets his mind & heart to. He is a musical genius. He is brilliant!

We knew he could sing ROCK like nobody’s business, but I was just completely blown away by his rendition of Don’t Stop Believin’. He was amazing! I took out some of my rock classics today, listened and started fantasizing about what David could do with some of my favorites like…

    Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Everyday People by Sly Stone
Dust In The Wind by Kansas
    Slow Ride by Foghat
More Than a Feeling by Boston
    Proud Mary by CCR
    Come Sail Away by Styx
Knockin On Heavens Door by Dylan
    Drive by The Cars
Dancing In The Dark by Springsteen
    Piano Man by Billy Joel
Time of the Season by The Zombies
California Dreamin’ by Mamas & Papas
    Crying by Roy Orbison
    Faithfully by Journey
I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton
Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin

    And so many others..

I dream of David someday recording some classic R&B & old Motown as well. He has the VOICE, the soulful sound to make any classic song new and his own. Oh sure, I want to hear him do his own compositions too, but as a lover of music, all genres of music, and a lover of David’s Voice, putting those loves of mine together would be heavenly & fabulous!

The three videos posted above really shows David’s versatility. Did I say he is brilliant!

Have a good night Snow Angelz!

    PS..is refnaf a Grandma yet??

SF I so LOVE your list for David to sing. Many of my favorites on there for sure. After hearing him sing part of Don’t Stop Belivin… it has whetted my appetite to hear him sing more covers.

refnaf… I feel real sorry for mama… being overdue is NO fun.

    Still waiting on baby news!

SF, LOVE your list! Anything by Smokey Robinson would be at the top of mine!

But then again, I NEVER would have picked “Bubbly” for him … too lightweight, too fluffy … then look what he did with it!

Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door would be amazing.

I just heard a CBC radio interview with Michael Buble this morning where he talked about recording his latest album the old-fashioned way … singing live with a band and recording the session “organically,” in the studio, instead of with voice and instruments on separate tracks, so it wouldn’t be too “slick.”

If that’s a new direction for recording, wouldn’t that be a very “David-friendly” approach down the line? *squee*

SF, “The three videos posted above really shows David’s versatility. Did I say he is brilliant!”

…and then add O Holy Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas! Ingenious!

Can we name anyone out there, of any age or any genre, who can duplicate his artistry?

TOfan, yes to organic!! Certainly hoping for something more in that vein!

‘Can we name anyone out there, of any age or any genre, who can duplicate his artistry?”

NO!!!! We can not name anyone!

the thought of him singing that list of yours SF has me crazy. The little clip of DSB is or repeat for me!

I think this is going to be an awesome year for David and us…. every new snippet of music will be so anticipated!!

Marlie the Archuawards are great, what a trip!!!

Back to anticipating Baby for me…. this is getting , well… tiring!! but fun> I’ll let you know..

  58. awestruck says:

Check this out. At :37 – 2:15 you can hear David and watch some guys dancing to ZG and Don’t Stop the Music.

  59. SandyBeaches says:

SF, I love your list of rock classics and not too hard to imagine David singing any of them. Why is that?

On a lighter note…when mention is made of singers such as Michael Buble or just about anyone trying a different style of recording, I have to wonder, “Have they heard David and how much his music is loved and are they deciding to try to copy him?” I know that is a crazy thought, but it goes through my mind….

    Where is that G’Baby ref?

awestruck…thanks for the video…men love the beat too! Big men having a great time as we see!

    SB,
Don’t think it’s so much that artists are “copying” him, but it seems a lot of them are growing weary (as are we) with the overproduced dreck heard on Top 40 radio these days.

(If you’d like to hear the Bublé interview, you can download the podcast here:
http://www.cbc.ca/q/pastepisodes.html … he also did a great one with Van Morrison that’s there.)

  61. Abrra says:

SB asked me to make a MGR of a famous singer doing a famous vocalization. 🙂 TOfan can you embed this for me?

DAvid doing his HOWL at the start of SOT-Minneapolis summer 2009

Abrra ( tick tock, baby waiting time is slow)

  62. SandyBeaches says:

Tofan I know that artists aren’t copying him, they have their own styles and agendas but maybe someday they just might…It was just a fleeting thought.

Do you like Michael Buble? I want to, but I can’t get in to what groove he is in. I just find his personality too quirky to become an admirer…In honesty, what makes him so famous? Maybe I am missing something. I know, he is doing wonderfully well.

    haha!!
