Honestly, it kind of hurts to laugh this much. I thought I was having a Richard Carpenter flashback.
David is always in the game, a trendsetter of a different kind. Remember the Guitar Hero commercial during the 2008 AI Tour performances? Yep, there he is at about 45 seconds in. It seems to be a dance or a fashion statement, maybe just a warning. Could be all of those, but I liked it.

Well, except one that aired during the Season 7 AI Finale… Anyway, I’ve always believed David’s look with the blue knit vest was inspired by Davy Jones of the Monkees with whom I was madly in crush as a tween.
