Reflecting on this whole JB getting booed incident

A5SHNvRCcAA1O6A.jpg-largeI didn’t watch the Billboard Awards but unless you were living under a rock (or on a mission in Chile), you must’ve heard about Beebs getting booed when he accepted an award Sunday night.

The article in my newspaper went so far as to title their piece “Why Justin Bieber was booed at the Billboard Awards (and probably deserved it).” Whoa. Harsh.

Unpopular opinion maybe but I feel a little sad about what’s happening to the Beebster. That age-old story of someone getting built up by the media and the public just for the blood-thirsty fun of eventually tearing them down.

I’m not a fan of his but I don’t hate the kid. Sure, he’s not the most responsible monkey owner but at least he was never arrested for harming his girlfriend (unlike someone else who did not get booed that night, but cheered, apparently).

What does this have to do with David? Doesn’t everything? lol

Seriously though, reading about all the negative press and public reaction that JB’s been getting lately, I can’t help but think (a) If David had gone the teen idol route Jive wanted him too after AI, that could very well be him being built up only to be torn down; and (b) That could still happen.

Not for topless airport shenanigans maybe, but some other more Davidish thing that we might find adorkably charming but the press and general public would have a field day with.

Because I really don’t believe Beebs is getting this reaction because of his behaviour… which is pretty tame in the grand scheme of showbiz “acting out” … or even his music, I think it’s more likely certain folks have just decided his 15 minutes are up. So they’re turning on him.

Adele was getting overexposed there for a while but she was wise to step out of the limelight… she knows it can burn.

This weekend, I also read a profile of actors Michael Shannon and Winona Ryder. The writer observed that:

“Whatever they do, someone tells them they should be doing something more. It’s as if, when a star reaches the level of being public property, everyone feels entitled to suggest renovations.”

Something David will have to get used to all over again come 2014.

If David were ever booed, I’d die a thousand deaths!

TOfan, this has been a lot on my mind since it happened. I watched the video of JB getting booed and couldn’t help feeling sorry for him. His initial silence (shock) and then his awkward response that he is not a gimmick but an artist who should be taken seriously was cringe-worthy. Of course I thought of David and the road not taken. My own belief is that it was less about a rejection of JB as it was outrage over Bruno Mars not getting the Milestone Award for innovation and artistic achievement. He got robbed.

Thanks for the context, Angelica. I can see JB being nominated for an award based on sales or even showmanship but I’m surprised he was not only nominated but won an award for “innovation.” Yes, sounds like Bruno was robbed.

As a mother, I felt bad as Justin tried to explain and defend himself. He’s just a kid in a fast-paced industry that shows no mercy. But most folks don’t like brats and sometimes he acts like one. Chris Brown has been criticized alot but he is considered a “bad boy” so some of the stuff he does people let slide, like punching in windows, fighting in bars, etc. (I think he is still paying somewhat for the Rihanna incident). Justin is an adult but some of the enablers around him make me mad. They will leave him in two seconds if his popularity takes a dive. Where was his mother in the before-18 years. (By the way, I am not a fan of either one.)

Then there’s David. What can you say. He was more of an example and role model before 18 than alot of adults.

So true about David as a role model… but I have to disagree about CB still paying for the Rihanna incident… he seems to be more successful than ever, no?

      • mlpb3 says:

I guess I’m thinking of old incidents where CB was booed and called out by other celebrities and groups on twitter; but yes, it appears music sales are going well for him. It guess it doesn’t help that even Rihanna has been “friendly” with him again.

It almost sounded like Justin was trying to convince himself as well as the audience that he was an innovator and deserved the award. He has a big fan base so he probably won’t have problems in that area. Hopefully as he gets older, he will mature mentally and take his career to another level.

Just my thoughts on the matter. Thanks so much for such interesting posts.

I see what you mean about CB… and I was surprised to get an email recently about him as part of my local radio station’s listener survey (which I only originally signed up for because of David, of course, lol) … the subject line read: “Does the singer CB belong on 98.1 CHFI? You tell us…” … the survey options ranged from “Yes, we’ve all moved on” to “No, violence against women is a deal-breaker for me” … I just thought that was interesting…

Very well said. GB is not getting his just dues in this situation. They should leave him alone and let him grow up. David is more introspective than GB.

I agree David is a role model. I also think people were upset that Bruno Mars did not receive the award. JB is sooo overrated, but I do not think the boos he received will hurt his career, and I am sure he’ll get over it.

TOfan, I watched, not pleasant. But him saying he should be taken seriously makes me even sadder, he actually believes he is in the league of JT and even MJ. Maybe sales wise but not artistically in comparison to these two, not even JT compares to MJ but from what I remember JT has never been an arrogant spoiled brat doing the crazy stunts JB is. So when people say he is only 19 that doesn’t give him a pass for his irresponsible behavior in my book…David at 16 displayed more common sense and true artistry. All this my opinion of course.

And the biebs fans? They trended RIP David Archuleta right after the Billboards and were trying to recruit David fans, some who were a little freaked out. When they where called by out by David fans they said they thought it was funny and were doing it for a laugh. We know how hard it is to trend so quite of few of the bieb fans participated…sad.

    • TOfan says:

They trended WHAT???!!!! grrrrrrr … sometimes I wonder if being arrogant is somewhat of a advantage if you’re a celebrity… to protect yourself against all the haters and other dreck that flies your way. sheesh

  7. djafan says:

    were not where lol

  8. Angelica says:

They trended RIP David Archuleta? Why? Do they view David as a threat? heh. 🙂

  9. Angelica says:

Hilarious! Especially the first paragraph (which I cannot post here).

    New post/thread!
