To the left, to the left

Lefties FTW!!! (Credit: ArchuletaPhillipines.com)

If you’re a David Archuleta fan raise your hand. I raised my left hand, how about you?

As soon as I found out David was left-handed – as am I – so many things clicked into place for me.

This David tweet for example: “I’ve noticed a pattern in my life of liking to look up statistics of random things. Populations, sales, names, etc. Not exactly sure why.”

I’ll tell you why, David. It’s probably because you’re left-handed. I’ve always been a Billboard chart and stats junkie too and research shows that we southpaws have a heightened degree of spatial awareness and sense of dimension, and we use visual cues – like charts and stats – to process information.

What makes a person left-handed? It’s because the brain is “cross-wired” so that the left hemisphere controls the right-handed side of the body and vice-versa and hand dominance is connected with brain dominance on the opposite side. The left brain focuses on syntax and order (right-handed people), while the right brain monitors context and emotions (lefties).

This brain dominance makes left-handers more likely than right-handers to be creative and visual thinkers. This is supported by the higher-than-average percentages of left-handers found in certain jobs and professions — music and the arts and media, for example.

About 10% of men and 8% of women are left-handed, and archaeological evidence indicates that these percentages have been stable for thousands of years. So you could say David is one in 10 (or one in a million, depending on how you look at it 🙂 ).

With the book signings going on this past week, and videos of David autographing away with his left-hand, I dug up a few more fascinating facts about lefties:

Credit: RisingStarOutreach.com

Leadership. About 66% of American presidents in the last 30 years were left-handed men. Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford were all left-handed presidents. Barack Obama and John McCain are both left-handed.

Independence. Some experts believe left-handed people are more independent because they’ve had to get along in a world that’s not made for them — that lefties are slightly more resistant to social pressures.

Adaptability. Canadian research shows that left-handed people are more adaptable than right-handed people. That is, a leftie can use his or her right hand to do tasks much easier than a rightie can use his or her left hand.

Visual memory. Left-handed persons use visual stimulus to process information. Research reveals that people who are left-handed do not use the sequential processing style like their right-handed colleagues, to disseminate information. Instead they are good at applying themselves to multiple tasks with the help of the synthesis method of breaking down information and finding a solution.

Musical aptitude. 50% of The Beatles are left handed (Paul and Ringo). (This has nothing to do with music but 1 in 4 Apollo astronauts were left-handed, which is 250% more than the normal level.) Other leftie musicians include:

um, this is real, by the way. Right, beebee? 🙂

Bach
Mozart
Robert Plant
Rachmaninoff
Paul Simon
Seal
Sting
Beethoven
Celine Dion
Bob Dylan
David Bowie
Phil Collins
David Foster
Stewart Copeland and Sting (both of The Police)
Bob Geldof
Glenn Frey
Glenn Gould
Jimi Hendrix
Annie Lennox
Wynton Marsalis
David Cook ☺

So, any other lefties out there?

Sunshine…That is very interesting and something that we notice and hardly ever check out.

But don’t forget ambidextrous…equally adept with both hands. Mahatma Ghandi, Leodardo da Vince, also ‘Paul McCartney, Robert Baden Powell and myself. So where do we fit in, I dare to ask?

    SB

  2. TOfan says:

LOVE your article, leftie Sunshine. I find this stuff fascinating! That means 50% of the original SnowAngelz are lefties (Sunshine & conditioner). 🙂

SB, you’re ambidextrous? Wow. I wonder if David’s a leftie for sports too (my hubby is right-handed but golfs, plays hockey & bats left while his bro does the opposite).

FYI, the latest Fox13 interview is up in the “Must See” sidebar, and here’s the YouTube version (vid from bumpaworm):

  3. TOfan says:

David & Jonah reunited at Good Things Utah! *cuteness overload*

    David & Jonah

  4. Abanana77 says:

Ahhhhhhhhh dying of cuteness!! I looooooooooove Jonah & David!

  5. TOfan says:

Apparently David is singing Rascal Flatts’ “God Bless the Broken Road” right now. I think I need to lie down.

So I didn’t have time to say earlier – Sunshine I love this post!!! I love random information 😀 Especially ones with percentages thrown in! Lalalala.

  8. awestruck says:

Sunshine, lovin’ this post. My hubby is a leftie and it sure explains some things for me, like:

    – visual cues are so important for Blair, I’m a reader
    – adaptability, Blair is ambidexterous LIKE SB in many things.

Have you got a favorite website that I can explore the visual memory differences between the sequential processing style and the synthesis method of breaking down information and finding a solution.

Way cool re the number of presidents who were/are left handed, the astronaut stat and an impressive list of leftie musicians.

Did a quick google search and found only that one prime minister here in Canada was possible ambidexterous – no lefties. hmmmm

  9. awestruck says:

That prime minister would be Pierre Trudeau

  10. conditioner says:

    Wow,

I loved that post Sunshine!! Very interesting!! I feel we are in great company being lefties! Both my hubby and I are lefties, and do certain things right handed. We find it interesting that both our children are right handed, and each of our parents were/are right handed. Neither one of us is musically inclined, though we love listening to music, and both our sons are excellent musicians, ….. not a day goes by where they don’t sit at the piano or play the guitar. Huh, Our brains are very complicated!!
I do feel that lefties learn to adapt at a very young age, whether consciously or subconsciously. sensitive?, emotional?….Oh yes, definitely!! haha.
Looking forward to seeing my favorite lefty show us some of his ‘creativity’ very soon!!!!

    Have a great day angelz!!!

  11. SandyBeaches says:

Hey Snow Angelz…was that refnaf on the twitvid on FOD?? Wow, that was great! She had a lot of books to sign!

    SB

  12. SandyBeaches says:

I am certain that someone will embed this quite soon!

    SB

  13. TOfan says:

Yes, SB, it is Refnaf! She emailed me to say she’s having computer issues but will fill us in with complete deets soon! 🙂

  14. TOfan says:

Just catching up on all the news & vids from today and finally had a chance to watch the Good Things Utah interview. Last time David was on that show, it was hilarious, the ladies ended up talking about airplane bathrooms and vasectomies & David’s reaction was priceless.

This time, ohmyheck, it’s as though he’d jumped in a time machine and popped out 10 years older and wiser. He’s so earnest and true sometimes it about breaks my heart.

And watching him use his hands to almost mime things, present them “spatially” … I thought of your post, Sunshine, and those leftie qualities of spatial awareness, dimension and imagination (you can almost see him picturing scenes, objects, etc.).

Now I’m rambling, lol. Oh, one more thing. After giving so much to so many fans today at that book signing, both his songs and the time he spent with everyone, then tonight he hosts a little Twitter party and gives just that bit more.

    Remarkable.

Okay, sorry, I’m done now. lol Hugs all, what a day.

  15. awestruck says:

TOfan, – this guy is truly special, isn’t he? But, even though we already knew that, I – too – am still jolted every time he shows us again.

  16. embe says:

My brother is left-handed, and he is kind of “untouchable”, meaning he genuinely lives his life without thinking about other people’s opinions of him and he doesn’t stress about anything. Though, he doesn’t have to worry about people’s opinions anyway, since everyone loves him lol.

    • TOfan says:

aww, your brother sounds lovely, embe!

      • embe says:

That he is 🙂 He is always calm, doesn’t like to be rude to anyone, only talks when it’s necessary and often says something that makes everyone speechless. He is a sweetheart. He’s the bass player in our band, and the only one that arrives to rehearsals on time 😀

  17. archiesfan4life says:

Sunshine – loved this article! I am ambidextrous, but I definitely use my left hand more – I think the nuns in grade school back then felt they had to make you use your right hand – no idea why.

I was well into adulthood when, during a converation, my mom told me that when I was young, they thought I was going to be a lefty – ummm – this may explain some of the confusion in my life – I don’t know whether I am right handed or left handed:):):.

    Thanks for a great arttcle!

    Hugs to all!

    • TOfan says:

AF4L, sounds like you can’t decide “between the left side and the right” LOL.

I’m finding it fascinating how many peeps here are either lefties or ambidextrous! So cool!!!

      • SandyBeaches says:

TOfan…we are special!! haha…and I read that some of us (the ambi people) could possibly have AADD, but I had better do some more researching on that.

On the David Archuleta calendar, this is “Tuesday, June 8th” so enjoy the day although it doesn’t feel like a normal Tuesday.

        SB

      • archiesfan4life says:

Hahaha – now I’ll think of this every time I hear that song!

  18. abanana77 says:

GUYS – I got my COS last night 😀

I have been trying not to plow through it so I took an internet break. Dyiiiiiiiiiing.

  19. SandyBeaches says:

abanana…It is ok to plow through it and then you do another reading more slowly and then after a few days you read it over again…each time you will find something new.

    SB

  20. TOfan says:

FYI, the Something Pitchy interview is available free on iTunes as a podcast (to find it, put “something pitchy podcast” in the search window). (Thanks @blaykee & @AnnieDAFG!)

Yes, I def. motored through the book & can’t wait to read it again more slowly. Although certain parts were so simple yet so profound, I stopped and read them over … and over… and over again.

So David sang Crush & Lean on Me today, wooot! TwitPic from @annyo84:

  21. TOfan says:

ohmyheck, Ms. Beebee took Jonerz’ “Peace” vid & turned it into this thing-of-beauty-and-a-joy-forever MGR! (Leave her a comment over at Planet Hunkerdown HERE!)

  22. TOfan says:

Fasten your seatbelts, folks, Lean on Me! The growl, the “WHAT????,” the runs … bossy acappella David FTW!!! 🙂

  23. TOfan says:

    ….and Crush!

  24. Zoe says:

Thanks for the fun article, Sunshine!

Although I remember reading years ago about how the brains of righties and lefties differ, I never thought about it in terms of David’s personality traits and talents. Interesting stuff!!

Add me to the long list of lefties. And it seems there are a lot more of us today than when I was growing up, although maybe that’s because society no longer tries to change our natural preference. Surprsingly, many of my extended family are lefties, although my hubby and kids are not.

What an illustrious group we lefties are!
Especially with David James in our ranks! 🙂

  25. betsy says:

    Love the lefty post!
It all makes perfect sense to me. All of the statistics. My eldest son is a lefty and my youngest son does certain things left-handed, like eating and pitching a baseball.
One thing they both have in common:
    Horrible handwriting! Just terrible!

*back to watching Bless the Broken Road for the 50th time*

  26. TOfan says:

Zoe, you’re a leftie too??? Wow. This is cool.

Betsy, scroll up for the GBTOR mp3 link … I had it on constant replay for my commute home. Heaven.

I think this is my new favourite video (and D’s actually signing left in it, so it’s not entirely off-topic 😆 ) … the mom’s trying to rush the little girl (probs didn’t want to keep people waiting) but David, with a bajillion fans still to sign for, has all the patience in the world … and love Lupe (in stripes!) texting in the back … the manzana doesn’t fall far from the tree! 🙂

[EDIT: Deleted since Emmegirl posted the same vid at the same time, below!]

  27. emmegirl says:

Love the lefty article. It explains alot about some of this right-hander’s deficiencies, lol!

The Peace David, a treasure, pure and simple. Thank you beebee!

His acoustic Crushes these last few days, possible bests. Gads, LOM, BTBR, show me something he can’t sing… heck, something he can’t do.

And these short vids at signing, well …just look for yourself.

  28. emmegirl says:

oh, sorry TOfan, you beat me to it! You can get rid of mine. Did you see the one that goes with this where he is trying to explain without laughing why famous people have such bad handwriting.

  29. emmegirl says:

ohmygoodness, lol TOfan. Was I just talking about ineptness! Thought my second one didn’t go through, what a mess…sorry!

    • TOfan says:

too funny … great fans think alike! hahaha

I love one of the comments on the YouTube … “I defy anyone not to smile when David smiles…it’s impossible. :-)” so true! 🙂

  30. jackryan4DA says:

TOfan – I dare say only the corpse can afford not to smile when David’s around

And if one is breathing, that person could be dead inside or something funky – as David would say nowadays – is going on with that person’s buccinator, zygomaticus major and risorius muscles — take your pick, tee-hee

  31. jackryan4DA says:

Added another vid to the MOA vault above — a great coverage of MOA Book Signing by Star Tribune:

LOL – “…he took the time to make his hair perfect and pointy” – probably because it was a lifestyle section, they had to same something relevant, bahahahahahaha

  32. refnaf says:

Feels like I have fallen off the face of the planet and am residing in a wonderful David bubble, cut off from my usual online David routines, and instead living a David experience that has been just amazing! My first order o business for my next trip is new GEAR! I need to upgrade! So sorry that I have been unable to update…..but I will get the whole story out when i get home
For now i will say that happy, glowy, growly, David, with the AMAZING hair is a sight to behold…..and his fans are the loveliest people in the world…..

To quote Cher in Moonstruck, SNAP OUT OF IT! We need David details!!!! (k, so that last part was me, not Cher 🙂 )

And congrats to @frogcooke for winning the AOL/Something Pitchy contest for the COS book signed with a classic David inscription. Here’s the whole story of what he signed inside the book from interviewer @gabydunn’s tweets:

LOL I’m still laughing thinking about it. Okay so, we hand him the book and he’s so used to making inscriptions out to people that he automatically writes “To:”

But then freaks out that he ruined the book because we obviously don’t know the name of the winner yet so he’s very apologetic and is like “Uh, oh no! What should I do?!”

And we’re all pretty much dying laughing and my co-worker jokes, “Just put ‘Insert Name Here’.”

Well, everyone else gets that it’s a joke but David accepts that and literally writes that inside the book, satisfied that he’s fixed his mistake.

After studying it for a sec, he draws a line above it so the person can fill in their name and is like “Fixed!”

    *dying*

  34. SandyBeaches says:

Oh Refnaf is in the after-Archuglow…Ahh, I remember, it was so many months ago!

But you see, today, David is not with his regular fans, HE IS WITH THE PRESIDENT!

The boy with David in the pic above seems to look a bit like David at about 12 yrs of age (Star Search yrs).
Congrats to those who were able to go to a book signing. Read your recaps and so enjoyed it. Another memorable event for you!

peppertara, I'm just catching up myself … all a bit overwhelming, isn't it? Only now in the Maybe I'm Amazed vid did I notice David's expression at 1:18ish when the host mentions a report on legalizing marijuana in California… bahahaha priceless.

Hope to be lucky enough to have a few myself one day! 🙂

  46. Zoe says:

Oh man…just listened to David singing the National Anthem.

    Chills, baby……CHILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. awestruck says:

    af4life, TOfan, Zoe thanks!

Zoe – yes David sang that National Anthem with such pride. Strongly and with more confidence. I was surprised that the seats were practically empty at that point anyway.

  48. Zoe says:

Awestruck, was listening to a sports station earlier in the day that talked about the sold out crowd for the previous night’s game. Seems a very promising up and coming pitcher was making his debut. Guess that didn’t do much for last night’s attendance.

Sigh…would have been AWESOME if David had sung at the previous night’s game! Could have picked up a few more thousand fans, haha!!

  49. TOfan says:

    Thanks, JR4DA!!!

Zoe, thanks for the info, I was wondering why the stands looked so empty … and here’s a pic from earlier in the day at the White House … typical David that he downplayed his role and focused on the Miracle Network kids. *sniff*

    White House kids

    More pics HERE.

    • awestruck says:

Yup, in all of the pics except one maybe two David was watching the kids who were looking at the president. What a guy.

Here is just a portion of the write-up from Lindsey, the Alabama Champion. It is special and I thought that I would place it in full view.

    Last Day in Washington, D.C.

Sadly, this was the last day of our trip. First, I got to have an interview with none other than David Archuleta from American Idol. He was super nice and so cute! I even got to meet his aunt. She was wonderful. I was feeling her ring because I love to feel jewelry. She gave it to me!! I cried! They said that we would keep in touch!!

    SB

  52. TOfan says:

Nice radio interview from this morning (97.1 ZHT) with little Tommy (what a riot he is!):

    http://www.971zht.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=morningzooshow.xml

Made me smile that David includes “seeing the fans” in with the fun parts of the music biz (like making music and recording and performing). 🙂 🙂 🙂

  53. abanana77 says:

DYING. I can not say enough times: David Archuleta + Kids = Fatal amounts of adorableness.

He is not looking at the President. He is looking at the kids looking at the President. That kills me.

  54. Zoe says:

    Abanana,

“Archuleta + Kids = Fatal amounts of adorableness.”

You nailed it!! The precious factor is enough to slay us all!

  55. jackryan4DA says:

    JUST A REMINDER:

If you have read the book, please make sure to drop a comment or review from where you bought it so people, esp non-Archies, will be able to read your glowing feedback 🙂

Just in case you haven’t done so, ok? 🙂

  56. jackryan4DA says:

Another vid came up of David talking to the Associated Press, presented by KVVU Fox5:

This reminds of Notting Hill. You know that part where Grant pretended to be media. Well June 2 shaped up to be a revolving door of interviews for David!

  57. justin says:

O my god!!! I’m a lefty and I never knew that about facts and charts and those kind of things, I always just thought it was something weird about me, but I didn’t mind because David was the same 🙂
This is a really neat article, I love finding out more stuff about left handed people and famous left handed people, I remember how excited I was when I found out David was a leftie, I almost fell out of my chair!!!

It’s hard to describe to right handed people what it’s like being left handed, some people cope with it better than others but every one of us runs into some kind of a problem all the time that we now don’t even think about because we have gotten so used to dealing with it. For example, lots of lefties find it really difficult to write with inky pens because they either smudge their writing or they have to bring their hand around the top of what they are writing which can be uncomfortable, me, I have no problem with my writing, since I first started I just brought my hand in a comfortable position that didn’t smudge and it was that simple, the hardest thing fo me is cutting.
Scissors, knives, you name it, if it cuts, I struggle with it. I cannot use right handed scissors ever, it just doesn’t work for me which is extremely frustrating, knives I have learned to live with because most people don’t even know that it is possible to get a left handed knife (the blade is on the other side), and I often get embarrassed in restaurants when I start trying to cut into my meal and I see the waiter getting ready to offer to have it cut up for me, which is unbelievably embarrassing when it does happen.

When it comes to hobbies and stuff, I vary between left and right handedness, I play guitar right handed, have done for 9 years now and I feel really uncomfortable playing it left handed, that was just a decision I made starting out, I play golf right handed, but that was more because I had no choice starting out and now I’m just used to it, other than that I use my left hand for everything.

Don’t get me wrong, I love being a lefty, and I honestly wouldn’t change it for the world, I love being unique, I love my creativity, I love my love of stats and of course I love having one more thing in common with the one and only Archie 🙂

  58. Georgianna says:

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either created myself or
outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping
it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any solutions to help stop content from
being stolen? I’d truly appreciate it.
