I feel a little sorry for Charice right now. Poor girl sang her heart out at a gay nightclub in New York Saturday night and all the Twitter buzz is about … David Archuleta. Some of the reports of the evening didn’t even bother to mention the girl’s name.
David did care about her singing, however. Charice invited her friend to her show. And his friends and his free time are just that, in my opinion, his. David’s personal life doesn’t matter to me one iota. He can elope with a yak for all I care, or take up clubbing or clog dancing (although it seems unlikely he’ll intentionally do any of those things). It’s none of my business. None. And I know many other fans feel exactly the same way.
But others clearly felt differently yesterday and caused enough TwitMayhem that David felt he had to break his Sunday “day off” to try and clear things up in the following tweets:
Were these tweets eloquent or politically correct? Not so much. Were they real and honest? Absolutely. That’s David.
Can we now move on to “real” news? New music from the most brilliant, genuine real-deal artist to come along in decades tops my list. How about you?

Apparently Marilyn_Archie (FOD) deleted her twitter account – I did try to access it late last night out of curiosity and was unsuccessful.
To think that some people have nothing better to do.
Good on David for handling it in a forthright manner. I’m just sorry that he felt he had to in the first place. And, that it caused a second wave of twitter nastiness.

But then I realize he’s definitely a billiion times better at protecting himself and removing himself from all of that than I could ever be.

Also this morning, his clearing tweets about his original clearing up tweets (getting ridiculous, eh?) were quite good. Finally I think people can give it a break.
TOfan – thanks so much for this post. David, like everyone, deserves to have his personal life be just that – his personal life. He gives us so much with his voice and by his example – that is definitely more than enough. I can’t imagine having your every move scrutinized – and at only 19! Sheesh is right!

I said this on Twitter last night and I can’t think of any better way to express how I feel…
“It makes me sick that David, who is so giving and has trustingly made himself so excessible to fans has to put up with crap like this!”
And for those that question whether David did the “right” thing by addressing the issue on Twitter, I say that if HE felt it was the right way to handle it, then it WAS the “right” way to handle it. He doesn’t need a bunch of armchair quarterbacks second guessing his every move.

You treat a very sensitive topic so deftly.
I’ve done cultural sensitivity training and counseled people in the workplace including issues of perceived discrimination for sexual orientation.
So, I’ve been privy to individuals perceptions on all facets of “protected status” disputes. And in the USA our individual perceptions can be particularly sensitized and polarized. Is it the same in Canada?
And that’s what it’s all about to me, perception. Even if intent is good, it really is what individuals’ perceive.
As a fan, its obvious to all of us that David speaks from his heart and his intentions are meant for the best.
Explanations, unfortunately, in the public arena can be a double edge-sword. And, I agree TOfan that a politically correct explanation is of paramount importance.
I applaud David for making a decision and handling it in his usual sincere manner. In his chosen occupation, he lives in the public eye. And that is definitely swimming with the sharks.
It is such a huge learning experience in handling culturally sensitive issues in the public domain.
It remains what the casual fan, music buyers, and TPTB who make decisions regarding artists absorb and perceive and if this get’s more “air” time and how it is spun.
My gut tells me it will blow over. And that those who want to be, the wiser for it.

You know what TOfan, I think political correctness among friends, family, people who know each other isn’t necessary. We can share our innermost thoughts and feelings because they know us and understand us and know our intentions.
But in public life it is critical. Most of us don’t live that type of life so we haven’t much to worry about except not offending our fellow colleagues in the workplace and other more formal settings.
We fans know David and we understand him very well. He’s like family or a friend to us. And as important as we are to him, we, alone, won’t sustain his career.
I see this as a great learning opportunity for him and he and Charice definitely did a great job tweeting each other and his follow up tweets were well done.
So that’s the analytical look at the facts side of me.
The feeling side of me wants to give him a great big HUG, ruffle his hair, and fix him lunch like I would one of my sons or nephews when they are mastering a difficult life skill.
“Sheesh” is absolutely right! I am anxiously awaiting this “life experience” to fall-off the David radar and tryin’ everyway possible to excuse the behavior of some of those who call themselves his fans 😦

When I first heard that David was out at dance club with Charice, (a well known gay club, no less), I thought, “Yay, good for him!” I thought it would be a great way to experience the diversity and difference of a large city club scene. I didn’t even think of the backlash he would get from his community of conservative fans. I guess this is the reason I was always against Twitter – you are so exposed.
I also was so annoyed and disgusted that he had to defend and basically apologize for being there. This is his life, he should be able to do what he wants without any excuses. Unfortunately, David still hasn’t learned that even he can’t please everyone, and his rationalizations & excuses seemed to dig him into an even deeper hole. C’est la vie, this will blow over, and as I said in a previous post, I am so ready for this drought to be over….let’s ring in the new!!

I also felt very bad for David. He is just not capable of maligning anyone and his true, dedicated fans know that very well. Loved reading everyone’s posts here with all that loving respect for David. Now that is what a TRUE fan does, bless you all! David handles himself with such grace and maturity (puts me to shame sometimes,lol) and I’m sure he has moved on to better things!

I was just thinking last night about a quote from Teddy Roosevelt my Dad kept framed above his desk in the den at home. He told me it was a reminder that “when things get tough, the tough get going.”
You probably have seen it before. It’s called “Dare Mighty Things:”

There’s been a lot of talk about David needing better management guidance or a publicist, and I’m sure he’ll get the whole “entourage” enchilada once his star rises even higher, so even though there may be missteps along the way, I treasure every nugget of truth that comes out of his mouth.
In his songwriting process and work on his new book, David’s spoken a lot about expressing who he is as a person and an artist, including more of his essential self in his work. That takes such courage and I hope none of this chills his natural inclination to be open, honest, forthright and true.
Would that even be possible? It is David, after all. 🙂

Also since I have no life, I wikipedia'ed "toonie" and I found out some quite interesting things. Apparently it cost 16 cents to make a toonie which is expected to last 20 yeah and the old 2$ bills cost only 6 cents each but only lasted 1 year. And about the name: "When the coin was introduced a number of nicknames were suggested. Some of the early ones included the bearie (analogous to the Loonie and its loon), the bearly, the deuce and the doubloonie (a play on "double Loonie" and the former Spanish doubloon coin)."

Confession time: At the VIP in Foxwoods, I gave David a lucky loonie (a $coin with a flying loon on it, for you non-Canadians) He examined it and I told him he needed to come to Canada on tour so he could spend it. He looked up at me with a very confused expression, and I felt rather silly
