Star of David: A Jewish perspective on Christmas From the Heart

Why is a nice Jewish woman listening – in quite an obsessive way, no less – to a Christmas album, you may ask? To David Archuleta’s Christmas album? Good question. To answer that, let me tell my own Christmas Story.

Growing up in New York City, the Christmas season for me was always a wonderful time.  As a kid, it meant family time, school vacations, great movies and shows … and shopping!   And beyond that, the holidays are a magical time in New York – from the stores with their fairy tale windows to the bustling shoppers and streets with snowflake decorations and lights and, of course, the delicious smell of hot pretzels and chestnuts on every corner.

What Christmas wasn’t to me, however, was a religious or spiritual time.  Yes, we had Chanukah, but in the list of Jewish holidays, this one seemed near the bottom of the totem pole.  It seems each year the Chanukah presents got more and more elaborate, though (probably in response to all the Jewish kids who started getting envious of all their Christian friends).  When I was young, a Chanukah gift was some coins or a pretty hairbrush.  My own children’s gifts ran the gamut of American Girl dolls and Game Boys when they were little to, more recently, iPods and cell phones.  How did this all happen? But I digress.

A lifetime of song
Music has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember.  My father loved the old standards – composers like Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin as well as the Broadway classics. Listening to this music marked the beginning of a lifetime of pleasure for me.  During the Christmas season we sometimes listened to what my father would describe as “holiday music.”  The songs were limited to the more secular types, the ones that didn’t mention church, Christianity or God.  The radio would play our favourites, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” and, of course, the Queen of all Christmas music, adored by Jews the world over, “White Christmas,” which was composed by Irving Berlin, who happened to be Jewish, himself.

Judaism in my life

I grew up in a non-religious Jewish home in Brooklyn.  We didn’t spend much time in synagogue, but I was always aware and very proud of my religion.  The spirit didn’t need to be drummed into me – it was all around.  My neighborhood was 95% Jewish and I just thought that was how the rest of the world was.  Christmas to me was something I watched on TV in great holiday movies, or read about in fascinating books – it was never real to me, it was a fairy tale.

I brought my own children up with more of a religious awareness than I had.  Maybe it was the different times we lived in, but I felt that I wanted more of a spiritual connection to my religion and the Jewish community, so my husband and I joined a neighbourhood temple.  One of the things I realized immediately was how embedded music was in the Jewish religion.  All prayers are sung (in Hebrew), and at all services there is a Rabbi as the officiator, as well as a Cantor, who is specifically trained to sing the prayers.  What I found most humorous was the funny bickering that would sometimes go on about what synagogue had the Cantor with the best voice – voice competitions go on even in temple!

Experiencing The Voice

Loving David’s voice was a no-brainer for me.  From the moment I heard the first few lines of “Heaven,” I knew I was witnessing something very special.  Are there other singers who have perfect pitch, incredible phrasing and an innate knowledge of drawing out the special nuances in music?  Perhaps.  Are there other singers who can emote and connect to you with their heart?  Maybe.  But it is the combination of these two things that puts David’s voice and talent on a whole other level.  Then to top things off, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better then this, you have “David.”

That non-judgmental, optimistic, child-like and yet profound, funny person, who gets more joy out of giving than receiving. This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings.  And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.

I remember last Christmas when I first heard David sing, “O Holy Night” at the tree lighting event.  I have heard that song sung many times before – I even heard it being performed live by a talented opera singer.   However, I never really heard that song, not until David performed it that night with just a piano in the background.  I thought I would blow out my iPod with all my repeated plays and listens.  It was just one of those performances that transformed me and although he is singing about Christ, it touched me in a very spiritual and personal way.

I can only describe it as that feeling I get every once in awhile, of total contentment and happiness.  Where I feel so blessed that I literally can’t move. I just want to drink in every second of it, because I know that what I’m feeling is fleeting, that it won’t last, that’s what makes it so special.  David’s voice in that particular performance brought me to that place, that feeling, and it was oh so perfect.

Christmas From the Heart, the album

I didn’t think twice about purchasing CFTH.  My husband gave me a strange look though and said, “You’re not really buying an album of Christmas music?”  With that I answered, “It’s David doing ballads with orchestras and choirs.  Does it really matter what he sings?”  And my assessment was correct.  David’s voice was its usual exquisite instrument and even though in my eyes, nothing can ever touch last year’s performance of “O Holy Night,” this recorded version comes pretty close.

There is no need for me to wax poetic about this album – that’s all been done before my many who are much more eloquent and musically proficient than I.  What is most important is that I now understand that the pleasure of this album has nothing to do with religion.

The connection of emotion and spirit experienced through his music is non-denominational – it breaks all barriers of race and religion.

How David does this, I do not know.  I am just glad I am here to experience and take part in this incredible journey.

Nina – Thank you so much for putting in writing your thoughts and feelings. This was exquisite to read and I was eagerly reading on the edge of my seat from sentence to sentence. To see through your eyes is such a beautiful gift this fine December morning.

And I haven’t seen this said anymore eloquently or descriptively…. “That non-judgmental, optimistic, child-like and yet profound, funny person, who gets more joy out of giving than receiving. This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.”

    Can’t wait to see you later this month. {{{Hugs}}}

  2. Josie says:

Nina – OH THANK YOU! What a really beautiful story! And Kizzi (my early morning partner in crime) that was my favorite part of Nina’s story.

Hugs to all my Angelz friends today!

  3. awestruck says:

Nina beautiful and beautifully written. Several points really struck home especially this:

“The connection of emotion and spirit experienced through his music is non-denominational – it breaks all barriers of race and religion.” You should tell this to David if you ever get the chance at a meet and greet. I can see his face now, lit right up.

  4. refnaf says:

wow, nina, just so interesting to hear your perspective on Davids voice and music…the spiritual and eternal that comes through when David “goes” to that special place when he sings (especially these Christmas songs) is something otherworldly to see. I have seen it first hand an he brings me along….
“How David does this, I do not know. I am just glad I am here to experience and take part in this incredible journey” This is how I feel too. I think David is able to do what he does because of his own personal connectedness to God. It is not religion it is spirit….and all can come along with him.
    (((hugs))) all around.

Awestruck!!! So glad you survived… archstupor FTW!

  5. awestruck says:

    (((refnaf)))… I am still processing…

  6. TOfan says:

    Nina,
Loved your whole story. From your childhood Christmas in NYC to your grown-up spiritual connection with CFTH.

When I listen to WCIT esp., I feel as though David’s leading us into that manger with him. But I just took for granted that feeling sprung from my personal belief system. To hear that his voice and music can transcend individual beliefs and touch a deeper level of Faith and Love and Peace…..

…. no words, just beautiful feelings, thank you.

    And this made me LOL:

“I didn’t think twice about purchasing CFTH. My husband gave me a strange look though and said, “You’re not really buying an album of Christmas music?” With that I answered, “It’s David doing ballads with orchestras and choirs. Does it really matter what he sings?” You go, girl! 😆

    (Awestruck, you’re still standing! LOL)

  7. SandyBeaches says:

Nina…I love your article and will be reading it again to take in all of your thoughts. I have been wondering how those with other religious or non-religious beliefs have been enjoying the spiritual carols that David has presented to us…

I absolutely “cherish” that special place that David takes us to…more recently discovered even further in SLC…His pictures tell all.

The Christmas tree painting at the top is awesome, as are your stories!

    ninaf,

Lovely write up from the Jewish perspective of how David’s music and character transcends religion and culture. He touches us all

    ninaf,

Been meaning to respond to this and work just keeps getting in the way of my pleasure. I want to tell you how lovely your article is. The way you talked about growing up as a little Jewish girl in New York who still found Christmas a thing of joy was magical.

There is so much genuine heart-felt emotion in David when he sings these songs, our spirits become a portal to something infinite and I feel as you do:

“I can only describe it as that feeling I get every once in awhile, of total contentment and happiness. Where I feel so blessed that I literally can’t move. I just want to drink in every second of it, because I know that what I’m feeling is fleeting, that it won’t last, that’s what makes it so special. David’s voice in that particular performance brought me to that place, that feeling, and it was oh so perfect.”

    I’ve been there.

    • Angelica says:

How strange! I started to write a comment this morning to your article ninaf, and closed my browser and logged off the computer. Came back when work allowed me a minute and made my comment and the first one I started appeared too! haha. What a strange, mysterious thing a computer is. I don’t know how they do what they do, but I’m very glad they do it. Kind of like what you said about David.

“How David does this, I do not know. I am just glad I am here to experience and take part in this incredible journey.”

      Ditto.

  10. TOfan says:

    Angelica, double-posts FTW!!! 😆

Nina, after the Ann Arbor concert, a few of us were lamenting how short the time frame for this tour had to be … David couldn’t really start it much before Thanksgiving and it could only run up to Christmas week. I jokingly suggested that these shows are amazing enough to run year-round … a “Christmas in July” tour ….

…. but when I read your post, I realized why I felt that way. You put it best, that “The connection of emotion and spirit experienced through his music is non-denominational – it breaks all barriers of race and religion”

… don’t you just want to celebrate that all year-round?

  11. archiesfan4life says:

Nina – how beautiful! I will be sure to let my friend Zoe know about this post.

  12. ninaf says:

Thank you all for your kind comments. My thoughts about David in regard to Christmas songs started for me last Christmas, but at that time I just couldn’t explain it – it took about a year to process my feelings…LOL

  13. ninaf says:

Tofan – yes, I do want to celebrate all year round and I’m already sad to think of how long I will have to wait to see David perform again after December. Is that going to be for his pop album promo? Oh no! – I won’t be able to wait because according to what I’ve heard, there’s no definitive date, it may not be until the latter part of 2010.

  14. TOfan says:

Latter part of 2010??? Say it ain’t so. He could do a small solo tour or do the opening-act thing again before that, surely? *grasps at straws*

One of tonight’s VIP questions, tweeted by np1107:
Q: Was fame everything you thought it would be?
D: Oh. I was going to say I haven’t watched that movie yet.

    😆

  15. calliexoda says:

    Nina!

Fellow Jewish CFTH fan, Zoe, reporting here!

Thank you for your eloquent, heartfelt and endearing post!

I can so relate to your wonderful childhood memories of Christmastime in NYC. My family would often make a trip to the city during the holiday week to see a Broadway show, and it was a highlight of the year for us. You are quite right…regardless of your personal beliefs, there really is something magical and exhilarating for EVERYONE in the Big Apple during the holiday season.

I, too, have always loved Christmas secular music, but, like you, it wasn’t until I heard David sing OHN and Amazing Grace last year that the spiritual connection grabbed hold of my heart and left me overcome with emotion.

So I was as eager as all the Christian fans to hear the CD. Little did I anticipate how immediate my addiction to this music would take hold! And as you can imagine, it’s no easy task to try to explain to my skeptical family (can you picture the hands on the hips and rolling of the eyes…”Mom, are you planning to convert??”) why I must have my fix of this CD almost daily.

Nina, as many others have noted, your beautiful words say it all…”This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.” Amen!

I’m no psych expert, but I do believe that we who “get” David, are a compassionate lot. We are openhearted, deeply moved by human suffering (don’t even start with me about animals) and have probably all experienced profound loss in our lives. For most of us music has the capacity to profoundly affect us. Regardless of our religious or nonreligious beliefs, with all the concerns in our lives today – with the war, the economy, illnesses, poverty and crimes, David’s voice is a Godsend, a channeler of hope, faith and peace.

  16. calliexoda says:

P.S. Thanks archiesfan4life and TOfan for making sure I saw Nina’s article!!

This is a delightful site and while it’s hard for me to regularly keep up with all things David, Snowangelz will now be on my daily must read list!

  17. happy says:

Oh, ninaf…beautiful, just beautiful. I love this post! You have spoken to me in the past of your love of the “sound of his voice” and how much you love listening to OHN, thank you for telling the story of your “Christmases past.” Your description of Christmas in the city is wonderful and the warmth of your spirit shines through … I think your connection to him has as much to do with the beauty of your spirit as his. Had I met someone else as my first blogging friend I might not have stuck around, but I met you and your warmth and authenticity made me feel like we had been friends forever….and that was before we shared a hotel room in Albany. 🙂

PS. My favorite lines?…. “That non-judgmental, optimistic, child-like and yet profound, funny person, who gets more joy out of giving than receiving. This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.” and

“My husband gave me a strange look though and said, “You’re not really buying an album of Christmas music?” With that I answered, “It’s David doing ballads with orchestras and choirs.” and

“Where I feel so blessed that I literally can’t move. I just want to drink in every second of it, because I know that what I’m feeling is fleeting, that it won’t last, that’s what makes it so special.” and

well…. all of it. I always knew you were a great writer!

  18. beebee says:

OH NINAF!!! {{{HUG}}} I adore every SCRAP of this post, every which way, up one side and down the other and THEN SOME! Thank you so much for writing it and posting it! I wish there were a way for David to read it. (*looks at ceiling* BRETT? Do you lurk here?? Please send this to David. Kthanks!)

    Just GOSH.

  19. awestruck says:

calliexoda – Zoe thanks for this (at 9:24)

“Nina, as many others have noted, your beautiful words say it all…”This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.” Amen!”

I will have to re read Nina’s article again to see what else I have missed. David’s character is truly one of the things that inspires me and when I read this I wondered how anyone can convey character in a song. But it is David we are talking about right!

I so totally agree with your last paragraph as well.

  20. ninaf says:

Wow, I’m blushing with all this praise. As a group I don’t think we will ever tire of discussing David and his voice, hence all these wonderful blogs that give us that opportunity.

I’m currently serving jury duty, criminal no less, and after spending the day listening to the horrible things people do to one another, it’s really nice to come home to my cyber family. Thanks everyone.

  21. djxox says:

    Nina~ {{HUGS}} Love your article!
…”the holidays are a magical time in New York – from the stores with their fairy tale windows to the bustling shoppers and streets with snowflake decorations and lights and, of course, the delicious smell of hot pretzels and chestnuts on every corner.” I can just smell them now, and those chestnuts made great handwarmers! I read your post while watching the lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center. Thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories of Christmas’ past.

Add in the beautiful sound of David’s voice and all is right, a lil slice of Heaven on Earth.

”This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.” You nailed it with that… beautifully said.

As far as the Christmas in July tour..count me in!!
It wouldn’t be the first time you found me sitting on the beach in July with OHN soaring through the earbuds! David singing OHN at 12 or 18 is a year round fav of mine. But will we have to wait THAT long?? He has kind of spoiled us ya know.

Maybe a Springtime Humming Tour?? 😉

  22. peppertara says:

Ninaf, just wanted to leave a comment and say that I so enjoyed reading your lovely article. You were able to convey, quite beautifully, the effect that David has on so many of us regardless of our personal spiritual beliefs and practices. David seems to draw us in to a place where we all share that common bond within our innermost natures. A wonderful place it is and the connection we feel to that projection of his heart and soul and spirit is truly something wonderful, you said it very well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings and experiences in this great little story. It was delightful to read and very nicely told.

  23. TOfan says:

    dj,
count me in for the Humming Tour! He hummed up a storm in Ann Arbor (esp. RRC and AM), maybe inspired by the symphony, that I wish could be captured on CD.

archiesfan4life & Zoe *waves to Philly buddies* … loved this, Z:
“Regardless of our religious or nonreligious beliefs, with all the concerns in our lives today – with the war, the economy, illnesses, poverty and crimes, David’s voice is a Godsend, a channeler of hope, faith and peace.” Amen to that.

beebee!!! I too would love David to read ninaf’s post … *yo, ceiling*

    peppertara,
“David seems to draw us in to a place where we all share that common bond within our innermost natures. A wonderful place it is and the connection we feel to that projection of his heart and soul and spirit is truly something wonderful”
… beautifully put! And he takes us to that wonderful place with every song … trouble is, I never want to leave.

    Fave bit:
“I’m really happy with the songs I’m working on. It’s about more than writing these big, smash radio hits, but how to show people what’s in my mind, my personality. I want people to understand who I am. The things I think about, what I want to talk about. I kind of want more songs that make people feel good. That make them say, ‘Hey, there’s a lot of good in this life.'”

  25. SandyBeaches says:

I have a confession to make before my David admirers…

I am not going to anymore then two of his concerts because it would be so ‘in my system to see him’ almost on a regular basis and then…the long dreaded winter, no concerts, only us saying “where is he now and on and on”…My withdrawl symptoms are difficult enough, therefore I must tread the concert scene sparingly!

    SB

  26. TOfan says:

Awww, SB! Believe me, I feel your ArchuPain! It’s almost impossible to get back to reality.

Case in point … Waaaay off-topic:

Guess David dropped by the Archie’s ice cream truck he tweeted about last night. (Not like any ice-cream truck I’ve ever seen!):

    peace sign2

    About Archie’s:
Troy, Raffi and Shant Keuilian own Archie’s Ice Cream, which caters ice cream at corporate parties, sporting events and concerts.
The company’s hallmark: custom-painted and autographed ice cream trucks… [which] are refurbished postal vehicles. Four of them are elaborately autographed by Steven Spielberg, Alice Cooper, Tony Hawk, Cyndi Lauper, and others.
“We’re not just about the ice cream, we’re about the Archie’s experience,” Raffi Keuilian said. “Our trucks are rolling museums.”

    News Alert!!

Just read the following review in the December 14th weekly edition of People Magazine:

David Archuleta, Christmas From the Heart:

“Last year’s Americdan Idol runnner-up delivers a winning set of yuletide faves such as “What Child Is This.” It’s all as impossible to resist as those dimples.

3-1/2 out of 4 stars…WAY TO GO, David!!

BTW, most of the other reviews of holiday albums did not do as well and none did better.

YAY!!! The critics are showing David some love!!

  28. calliexoda says:

Oops…where’s the spellcheck when you need it, LOL!

  29. jncohen569 says:

    Nina,
Your post motivated me to get an account just so I could respond to it. Thank you SO much for your perspective on David’s christmas music and CD. Though a decade or two later and on the opposite coast, it sounds as if I had quite a similar upbringing to you. I grew up in a not-too-religious home in San Francisco, and yet experienced little to no cognitive dissonance when it came to the question of listening to his christmas music, buying the CD, and going to see him at his Christmas tour.

Your entire “Experiencing the Voice” section is especially magnificently written and resonates with me. I appreciate your words because it helps me to piece together the jumble of feelings and thoughts that come up for me when listening to and watching him sing. And I couldn’t agree with you more about this: “The connection of emotion and spirit experienced through his music is non-denominational – it breaks all barriers of race and religion.” One not need share the same religious beliefs to feel and appreciate his passion. Sorry my response isn’t anywhere near as eloquent as the post itself. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated it though!

  30. TOfan says:

jncohen569, welcome! Your thoughts and words most eloquent, indeed, thank you! I love the way David’s music brings people from so many different places, walks of life, and traditions together to celebrate the joy they’ve found.

  31. TOfan says:

    Breaking news!:
Just added some amazing “must watch” stealth videos from Ann Arbor to the end of the post above.

Although it was wonderful to experience that concert without cameras and phones being held over every head, I can’t deny I’m thrilled to find any snippet of picture or sound from that once-in-a-lifetime show so the magic of that night can be shared!

EDIT: Forgot to add video credit: urvoiceismagic (aka ArchuNinja!)

  32. ninaf says:

jncohen, I’m so glad you de-lurked to comment on my post. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are a lot more Jewish “obsessed David CFTH lovers,” then I originally thought.

I feel like making an official announcements, “TO ALL MUSIC LOVERS WHO HAPPEN TO BE JEWISH: YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE – IT’S O.K. TO COME OUT OF THE CLOSET. YOU DON’T HAVE TO HIDE FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHEN LISTENING TO DAVID’S CHRISTMAS MUSIC ON YOUR I-POD. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO FIGHT IT ANYMORE…C’MON! HE’S THE STREISAND OF THE 21ST CENTURY!”

  33. TOfan says:

    bahahahahahaha ninaf!

  34. pastelpastel says:

Hi Nina…I really loved your post. Ever word you said rang true to me. David’s voice and connection transcends any official religion, and speaks to the spiritual goodness of whatever we choose to believe. David never hides his personal beliefs, and I respect him for that. I will encourage others to come and read your lovely post.

  35. stenocruiser says:

    TOfan —

What a wonderful discovery — those Ann Arbor videos! As you say, even though we were there I must say I cannot stop watching them to see and hear our beyond-talented David and relive some of that superb concert. I still can’t believe I was actually there — like a dream. Those who weren’t there can at least savour some of that incredible night — kudos to the stealth videographer.

  36. Kizzi says:

Oh, the stealth videos are truly magnificent. What a wonderful gift!

Ninaf – I can’t tell you how many times I have read your article. It is full of universal truths. I have been telling all my David fan friends and acquaintances about your article. Thank you so very much! (…and, you say you can’t write..pfffft..you can write like David can sing, my friend)

morning angelzz, Stealth vids FTW, reliving AA, dragging that concert out as long as I can…. a treasure.
TOfan, I am with you on the Riddle. The Christmas songs make me soar, but in The Riddle I see what I hope to be David’s future. Him at a piano, singing honest songs with truth and conviction and hope. This is my wish for David’s future, mid size venues…. a strong and committed following…. no Disney or dancing girl hype, pyrotechnics and OTT outfits… just David doing what he does best, singing a connection to all who listen. IMO him being the next huge thing is not everything it’s cracked up to be.

    Welcome jncohen

(((kizzi))) miss you! nice to “see” you to pastel!

Awestruck!!! where are you???? Details coming??

  39. TOfan says:

    Ho! Ho! Ho! everybody! 🙂

  40. yjfanofdavid says:

Thank you uvoiceismagical for your heroic and stealthy efforts! David’s Ann Arbor performance is just too glorious not be shared with those not fortunate enough to be there — there is something so magical about David and a symphony. He sings as if he is a master painter splashing colors on the canvas provided by the orchestra…

Refnaf, Count me as one of the Riddle lovers — “The Riddle I see is what I hope to be David’s future. Him at a piano, singing honest songs with truth and conviction and hope.” I too hope this is a glimpse of “the sound of David Archuleta”.

Ninaf and Zoe, another Jewish CFTH fan here! David’s music defies the confines and boundaries of religions, faiths, and denominations. Ninaf, what a heart-warming account of the Jewish perspective!!

  41. djafan says:

    Nina….

The connection of emotion and spirit experienced through his music is non-denominational – it breaks all barriers of race and religion.

How David does this, I do not know. I am just glad I am here to experience and take part in this incredible journey.

Isn’t that most amazing fact of what David does. I to don’t have a clue on how he does it except for it seems that he is supposed to for some reason…What the heck did I just say? Iknow you all here understand me, others not so much.

    🙂

  42. djafan says:

Another quite interesting thing about all this is the friendships you develop, Bebereader, also Jewish and myself a born again Christian have become great friends through David.

RT @tammy_m: David Archuleta is about to sing at my grandma’s assisted living center, 15 feet from me!!!

RT @tammy_m: I can’t wait to see how adorable he is in person. What a sweetheart for singing here, right? No TV cameras or press. Top secret.

…Guys, I just shook David Archuleta’s hand!! I might never wash it again…

@tammy_m here’s what he sang: The Christmas Song, Mary Did You Know?, then he had a sweet older guy come up & sing Silent Night w/ him.

RT @tammy_m: Then a lady requested he sing I’ll Be Home for Christmas. I honestly started to cry/end, it was so beautiful & sweet of him.

RT @tammy_m asked every1’s name, told every old lady he liked their Christmas sweater! They didnt know who he was before; now they love him.

RT @tammy_m: I told him my grandma’s name was Elinor, and he was like, “Oh, like the song!” and sang a few lines of Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) to her.

… He’s so genuinely nice: after shaking everyone’s hand on the 1st row, he brushed off security and went down the other rows.

RT @tammy_m: I got several videos of him singing, I’m uploading them to vimeo now and I’ll post when they’re there.

    *sniff*

TOfan thanks for the links to The Riddle mp3 from AA. I agree with everyone above who thinks this is a great direction for David to be going in. I sure can see him there.

    refnaf HELLO, details coming…

TOfan snowflakes here and in Calgary – we have close to 5″ now and still coming down.

  46. refnaf says:

    hey dja!!!
That is the one thing that I did not expect from this fan thing…. so many new friends, so many new places to go…

YJF “the sound of David Archuleta” YES!!!

TOfan…. thanks for those tweets, can you believe what our boy is up to??? He does this not for publicity, but cause he wants to spread love and cheer, what a kid! LOve the snowflakes on the banner BTW!

Awestruck!! no pressure, just want to be sure you are still sane and happy…

  47. yjfanofdavid says:

    Tofan, Thanks for the tweets:

“asked every1’s name, told every old lady he liked their Christmas sweater … after shaking everyone’s hand on the 1st row, he brushed off security and went down the other rows.”

    Oh my. *sniff*

  48. ninaf says:

I agree on the AA The Riddle – it was over the top. This is the type of music and presentation that should be David’s future – it’s commercial, radio friendly, yet heartfelt – it’s the best thing for him right now in his career. However, I am looking forward to the day I can see David perform at Carnegie Hall, with an orchestra singing mostly ballads. To me, that would be David at his finest – but hey, don’t listen to me, I’m old…LOL

  49. jncohen569 says:

Thank you for your warn welcome! I am glad that you are glad that I commented! haha
I love how lively your comment section is here.
Question, Nina, do you mean that The Riddle in AA was over the top in a bad way? I usually associate the expression “over the top” with something negative, but by the way you’re talking about it, I kind of assume otherwise. Either way, I’m totally with you on the “commercial, radio friendly, yet heartfelt” thing. I like to stress the significance of his passion and emotion coming across. But don’t get me wrong, I can always appreciate the fun songs like Zero Gravity as well.
and TOfan, I’m loving the snowflakes! They’re great!

  50. ninaf says:

jncohen-yes, I meant “over the top” in a good way, it was amazing.

I don’t know what made me use that expression. I usually say “over the top” when describing a performance by Adam Lambert, and no, not in a good way..LOL

    GREAT SNOWFLAKES TOFAN!!

  51. awestruck says:

refnaf – happy YES, sane debatable LOL

ninaf – still pulling things out of you article like; “This mixture of talent, emotion and character seeps through every note he sings. And that’s what I find contagious, that’s the killer combo – that’s what keeps me coming back for more.”

I think someone commented earlier on this, but it is a great description -talent, emotion and character. Just pulls it all together for me. As for you being “old”, well – as my mother likes to say -‘more mature’

jncohen – I hadn’t listened to Top 40 pop music in forever, until David. And I think that this is where David’s character comes into it – words that don’t offend and actually mean something. Silly reason to like someone, but for me it is also about being able to actually hear the words clearly.

  52. refnaf says:

Vid of David, at the assisted living center, he is a natural at everything he does..,

  53. Kizzi says:

G’mornin’ SnowAngelz….its snowing here in Angelz land, just a light flurry though…veerrrrryyy Christmas-y TOfan.

♫ ♪…Oh the weather at Angelz’ is quite de-light-ful..Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…♫ ♪ ♫

Here is the video Ms Tammy M from Twitter-ville put up from David’s visit at her grandmother’s assisted living home:

Her caption for the video: “My gosh, he is so genuine and sweet! I like when he has the lady join in part way though. I put the camera on my grandma enjoying the singing (to my right) toward the end, and he talks about himself for just a minute at the very end…”

So all you concert goers in ArchuStupor, it isn’t letting up, is it? 🙂

How do you find any more words…(or feel any more soul piercing or deeper than deep heartfelt emotions)…to describe…(that sweet, poignant, loving, giving, take-time-out-of-my-beyond-hectic-schedule-to-stop-and-sing-for-a-group-of-home-bound-individuals-who-on-the-whole-don’t-even-know-who-I-am)…David?

  54. Josie says:

Oh my goodness…It’s not that I didn’t KNOW David was good and kind and compassionate, it’s that YET AGAIN we have the proof and it just slays me.

And he didn’t go to the assisted living residence for the publicity, he went because he wanted to give those lovely folks something to make them smile. And smile they did. It was purely accidental that “Tammy_M” captured it.

He makes me more proud every single day. Imagine that.

  55. awestruck says:

David keeps on giving. Made me tear up that vid, and so relaxed while speaking at the end – the words just flowed.

  56. TOfan says:

Just watched the video (had to hit the road yesterday for Ottawa before it went up) … oh my, you’re right Josie, just when you thought you couldn’t love him any more…..

And what touches me most is that he did wonderful things like this even before A.I., it’s just who he is.

When he invites the lady to sing — “You know this song”? gah, waterworks

  57. ninaf says:

Alright, now I’m tearing up again – that video really touched me, and I’m at work so I hope nobody notices.

It’s very hard for me not to feel emotional when watching anything that has to do with, (for lack of a better word), the elderly. They are just so appreciative of anything you do. I am part of a community choir and we have sung at some of these types of homes – it’s very special to me.

It’s so typical that when someone asked where he was from, he mentioned his town, brothers & sisters, pets, etc. He never mentioned anything about himself as a singer, that’s David – he knows why he’s there, to make them feel good and special.

At his young age of almost 19, he already realizes that one gets just as much, maybe even more, pleasure at performing for them, then the people who are the recipients of this wonderful gift. He is so genuine, because he just doesn’t say it, he lives his life that way.

  58. yjfanofdavid says:

Tofan,Ninaf, Refnaf, Looks like IdolChatter is on Team Riddle as well. Here is a quote from its recent article on David:

“On another topic, I’m not sure how long David has been covering Five for Fighting’s The Riddle in concert, but it’s a great song choice for him. Watch this clip and see if you don’t agree.”

    🙂

HYAMLC — Rexburg — No duet so David takes it to another level. Amazing! Soulful variations, runs, and he is loving it.

  60. awestruck says:

stenocruiser – oh my, oh my, oh my. I thought he did a wonderful job solo with HYAMLC in Santa Rosa, but this, this is just sublime

  61. emmiegirl says:

  68. awestruck says:

that’s what is so exciting! It’s just the beginning

lol! I’m a little scared, cause I think your right…I better start eating my spinach now!

BTW, I really like the band. They are sounding great.
The drummer seems almost reverent toward David when he is not playing; Steve is really talented and appears to be having the time of his life. They have done a superb job putting this tour together IMO.

  71. emmiegirl says:

Apologies, ninaf on not complimenting you on a stellar post. Your openness and willingness to receive David’s gift at face value is a direct reflection of him…awesome!

  72. ninaf says:

How does he do it – that HYAMLC is just superb – even though it’s just a partial, I think it’s better then Santa Rosa. It’s very sweet when he sings this with Lupe, but I so prefer it solo.

On another note, is it just me, or does David look especially gorgeous tonight?

  73. awestruck says:

OK = does he have multiple purple shirts or does he get it washed every day???

emmiegirl – “Your openness and willingness to receive David’s gift at face value is a direct reflection of him…awesome!”

    this is so very true!
