The phone rang and I paused the People.com video at this spot. When I hung up the phone and looked at the screen, I was struck by the starkly different expressions of Rick Springfield and David Archuleta, the two subjects of People Magazine’s 35th anniversary “Rick vs. David: Teen Idol Mania” photo shoot.
Rick — a 1980s pop-rocker best-known for the hit “Jessie’s Girl” — is now 60 years old, believe it or not. He’s leaning against the wall, eyes closed, wearing a serene smile, as if reliving the glory days of his teen-idol youth.
David, 18, a teen-idol rookie, giggles and plays along as though his sisters have surprised him with a tickle-fest attack.

An interesting choice of subjects by People magazine. They could have picked the more obvious JoBros or Zac whatshisname for the young heartthrob. And could have gone with Donny Osmond or, gasp, Corey Haim, for the senior statesman.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to remember Aussie Rick as more of a grown-up’s poster boy, one with an edge. We know of course that David’s talent is too significant for him to be thought of as merely a “teen idol” for long. But it looks as though he’s having fun with it for now. (Possibly the very advice Rick passed along to him.)

Well said Snowangel! Rick is saying to himself….”its been too long…this was totally cool”. And David is saying “Wait, you guys aren’t real fans! If you were you know how ticklish I am!”
I thought it was a very appropriate photoshoot. Both are uber cool in their soft black, then grey, leather duds (btw…grey IS the new black, or brown, or navy..whatever). And David w/ the piano, Rick w/ the guitar? Loved it. The elder statesmen passes the baton to the way-more-than-a-heart-throb teen sensation. And hopefully ne’er an Idol mention. (The Lupe compliment more than makes up for that!).
This was more than I expected and it was totally fun. Maybe I should buy my People subscription now.

I barely remember, Rick, just his one big hit (jesse’s girl) but seems he is still putting on a good show according to comments I have read. He seems to have aged gracefully, and out of the tabloid media spotligtht, over the years.

So I made Mr K watch the Rick/David People Mag video last night…we talked over the phone while he was watching at home and me in New Jersey. He loved it. When the video finished we talked about Snow Angelz (he thinks this site is romantic) and then he sang this song to me (to the music of Earth Angels by the Penguins):
“Snow angelz, snow angelz

I’m just a fool, a fool in love with you”
He said in his day that song was what he danced to and being a hottie male teen was what “Earth Angel” was all about. Whew – talk about a blast from the past! That sweet, sweet man.

TOfan, I noticed too the contrast in the way each man reacts to the fawning. The seasoned Rick loving it calmly and David’s laughing resistance. During the video shoot, his facial expressions range from serious concern to feigned alarm to hilarity. (What an actor he could be!) I agree with you and Kizzi, pairing the edgy Aussie with the adorkable Utahn is a winning combo.

That vlog is sooooo awesomeage! His cheeks are all better and mine are puffy from grinning so much. I watched four times which was probably too much for one sitting. haha. He LOVES Colbie and Joy and Christmas and is so uber excited about the CD coming out next week. Welcome to the club David! He LOVES having “so much pain throughout his whole body” from working out. He is just so excited period and so stinkin precious! I had to hit replay over and over to watch the rare display of irritation and frustration, David style. At 2:57 – 3:02. He shuts his eyes and rubs his chest starting at the center and works his way from one side to the other without once opening his eyes again till he’s done thinking of that “issued computer!” Oh mercy. And those BIG eyes when they are open set against the most perfect, creamy complexion. OK, I’m done. He done me.
David is just one big happy smile! 😀 Love his perseverance! He was on an ‘issued computer” haha but didn’t give up; he knows how much we love his vlogs! What a difference from the last blog where he was nervous about having his wisdom teeth out. But he was smiling on that one, too!

I was through here this morning and read the postings about his vlog, and wanted to say that Josie, you made me go back and look for that moment when he shouted the Christmas album news.
Sure enough, he did. I giggled all the way through again. But it’s the ending that does me in. It’s like he’s trying to contain his own laughter at himself for dropping the piano — and it reminds me of that clip of him dancing with Claudia as a kid and dropping HER, and that ear-splitting smile which was another magical David moment I’ve never forgotten. Glad he still smiles like that. Hope he always does.
I’m not sure how I’m going to get anything done in the next little while. The vlog and album news have me going and then there will be the album. With all of those songs in full. And Ave Maria with the choir AND David AND Bestor’s work.

Ref – rambling is a direct effect of David watching – I do it too! Don’t want to miss a thing and a zillion thoughts, emotions and ideas are rushing through my brain clamoring for expression all at the same time. Rambling is good stuff.

Kizzi & Ref, I usually agree with you both on just about everything but “Longer”???? Sorry, guys, but when they gave him that song to sing, it confirmed my fears that A.I. was throwing David under the bus. Don’t get me wrong, he sang it beautifully but the song itself makes me wince with its cheesiness. *ducks rotten tomatoes*

I was just sUrPrIsEd when the song was highlighted this week as I thought the minority opinion would never be given an acknowledgement.
Folgelberg wasn’t mainstream when “Longer” was popular way back when. We Earth Mama’s really dug him! LOL I would love to hear it with the updated (was it Jazzy/Blues, IDK) arrangement that they said the producers nixed.
Oh, well, I’ll console myself with CFTH…and some consolation prize that!

Bestor traveled to the Czech Republic to conduct The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, which recorded the strings that accompany all three of his songs. He also conducted the orchestra on four other songs recorded for the album.

My two cents: I loved David’s “Longer Than” on AI7. Maybe I eat too much cheeese, but I didn’t understand why it didn’t get more props from the fans. I also like Dan’s “Leader of the Band” and “Run For the Roses”.

No canned synthetic music this time. This is the real thing….real live musicians playing real live instruments producing authentic respectful music to accompany THE VOICE, who deserves nothing better.

David sings in French like he’s a native! Notice how well he does with languages and accents. When he was in The Philippines he learned some of the expressions well enough to recite them back to the fans during his show. Some people just have that knack.
