In case you were wondering what the heck I listened to over the last month, without David songs to replay, I thought I’d give you a sampling.
I revisited a lot of old favourites (and I mean old), from Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison to Leonard Cohen, Stacey Kent and Linda Ronstadt. Also finally listened to albums I’d bought but hadn’t really listened to much lately, Mumford and Sons, Ed Sheeran and Ben Rector, awesome stuff. And I discovered a lot of great new music like Of Monsters and Men (from Iceland), Churchill (still have their song “Change” on replay, tbh), a Newfoundland group with angelic harmonies called The Once, and others.
Another Canadian artist I listened to was Kathleen Edwards. She’s a beloved singer/songwriter in this country but you may never have even heard her name.
I’m posting this video because I love what she says here about creativity and the songwriting process, and how she’s chosen artistic integrity over selling out (yes, there is some salty language… jsyk 🙂 ).

What does this have to do with David?
Well, when I think of the last original song he wrote and shared with us before he left, “Broken,” I can’t help but imagine that that song tapped into a deeper vein of David’s own sound than we had ever heard before. His inner singer/songwriter … a true artist who chooses creative integrity over selling out, as Kathleen talks about in the video.
Who knows what David’s “sound” will be come 2014 but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a near cousin of “Broken,” with him at the piano taking us with him to that place he goes when he sings.
p.s. still a little too not over the fact that he wasn’t wearing that fancy shirt in the studio recording it because they were making a video for the song. Oh well, maybe another thing in that big vault of his. 🙂

Fun to follow the singer/songwriter, artistic integrity line of speculation. Its definitely more in keeping with enjoying the journey rather than getting to a destination. That hand reader emphasized same in his analysis of David’s palms… 😀
Do you find your music appreciation expanded with your David hiatus?
I’ve been listening to some oldies I resurrected from my teens and college years, Gordon Lightfoot, Bread, Doobie Brothers, Christopher Cross (I played “Sailing” until I wore out the record, really!) and others. Also my son sings in a barber shop quartet and an a capella group and he has turned me on to the Pentatonix and played this a lot at Christmas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSUFzC6_fp8&list=UUmv1CLT6ZcFdTJMHxaR9XeA – amazing what the voice can do as a musical instrument.
Good question, Kiz. I’m someone who’s always listened to a lot of music, even BD (before David), so without his amazingness to listen to, I first went back to my old favourites, but even with them, I didn’t feel compelled to put albums or songs on repeat the way I do with David’s. So yes, I went further afield trying to find some new stuff, I mean I knew it probably wouldn’t grab me like David’s music/voice does but I did discover some new music I’m still listening to now.

I enjoyed reading this TOfan. Yes, so much good music out there. Have to say that I was not familiar with Kathleen Edwards (shameful Canadian, ha) but really do like her music and her originality and creative process. There are a lot of great Canadian artists actually (and otherwise).
Same for me though, I do listen to other artists and enjoy them but always come back to D (repeatedly). Have to have my daily dose! His magic is rather unique.
Some interesting links here to interesting artists, thankfully there is no cap on musical expression and so many get to realize that expression, no matter how far or small reaching it may be. I all adds something to our appreciation of music and individuality.
Looking forward to what D may bring and explore when he returns. Definitely no cap on his musicality or expression!
This is def the benefit to you being away from David, TOfan…… music research. I am a slacker when it comes to finding new music (although I did find Pentatonix at Christmas too, Kiz> awesome) When I was younger I was not much of a music geek…. only listened to top 40.
I have just bought the Once and lurve them …. listening to Of Monsters and Men now> very good and will continue with your playlist TOfan
Still need to Listen to the Kathleen Edwards interview…. but I am all for David doing whatever he wants> whether that means huge success or not!
