GCT mini-rant: Reviewing the reviewers

Source: Tumblr/lifelessmiserable

*cartwheels* the PBS (WNED) Program Guide for December came in the mail today and I tore it open like it was a copy of … well, anything David related 🙂 … I flipped and flipped and flipped through the pages till I finally found it … ta da!!!! … “Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring David Archuleta and Michael York: Holiday song, story, dance. 12/25 8 p.m. (60 min.). Repeats 12/25, 3 p.m.”

Not sure why this was so exciting (since I already have the DVD) but there’s just something about seeing Mr. Archuleta on my TV screen that makes it worth owning.

Like many of you, I’ve been checking out the music reviews for Glad Christmas Tidings and although, for the most part, they’ve been positive (like this one), every single one of them has missed a significant point, imho. The fact that the album was recorded LIVE!!!!!

All of the other CDs in these reviews have been recorded in a studio and “polished” to varying degrees to make the singer and arrangements sound as perfect as possible. (And in part to remind myself why this is necessary, I watched a youTube of JB singing Mistletoe live at one of his shows and it was off-key the entire way through… wait, that’s a lie, I didn’t make it to the end.)

"When love came down to the ea-ea-earth!" (Source: Deseret News.)

Maybe David just makes it look too easy. He came to be known on Idol for impeccable vocals, so perhaps when these reviewers listen to such an exquisite live recording they take for granted that he’ll deliver..e.a.c.h..and..e.v.e.r.y..t.i.m.e.

In fact, when I first watched the GCT DVD, I was relieved that you could hear David breathing from time to time because it sounded so perfect I feared peeps would accuse him of lip-synching. As if!

The overall positive reviews have been great to see actually, and I’m hoping when the PBS special airs, a lightbulb will go off over new viewers’ heads to alert them of the incredible accomplishment that is Glad Christmas Tidings.

Not just the technical excellence of a brilliant vocal performance live in concert with a full orchestra and choir in front of 21,000 people, but David’s interpretation of these carols — how he fills our hearts with the joy and love that is Christmas.

P.S. Vloggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More info:
I apologize for my computer’s issues! It keeps freezing every few frames but I still wanted to put up a blog either way this week. Got to go back to Utah last week for the Glad Christmas Tidings promotion and some signings. Getting ready for the My Kind of Christmas Tour that starts this week! I might have said Nokia Club instead of Club Nokia so sorry if I did I’m not a morning person lol.

Normally I’m not one to “defend” David through the comments in blogs and reviews, after all, it’s part of the biz and more often than not, it makes the fans look a little too OTT, a little too defensive, if you know what i mean. But there was one review where it was obvious that the critic had not bothered to listen to GCT, at all. For the first time, I emailed the author, not saying a word about the review, but offering to send him a DVD with a line or two saying, “I’d really like you to listen to it” and “It’s such a beautiful CD/DVD, I’d love to share it with you.”

    Haha, passive aggressive, much?

  2. archugeezer says:

    Exactly!!

After I read a few lukewarm reviews, I wished “LIVE from the 21,000-seat Conference Center in Salt Lake City!” had been emblazoned across the front of the CD case. Yes, I am biased, but seldom fooled. What David did, in that live setting, with that choir and that orchestra and that music… Well, it was an artistic accomplishment on a par with the best and worthy of more than a conciliatory passing grade.

(And, good for Janey! I like it.)

    • janey says:

What would lovely (and just) would be a review from someone who reviews classic albums. I’d be interested in what they have to say. Until then, I’ll go with what the very unbiased Dean Kaelin had to say, “He definitely won over the audience and the choir and proved he deserves to be recognized with the great vocalists and performers of our day!”

    • TOfan says:

“it was an artistic accomplishment on a par with the best and worthy of more than a conciliatory passing grade” YES!!!!

  3. Heidijoy says:

You make some interesting points. Hadn’t thought that they didn’t even listen or didn’t if mention that it was LIVE. Didn’t post in comments but sure was tempted when one mentioned it didn’t have enough Grit!! What????????????
So happy we have fan sites with people who “Get” David and appreciate his talent.

  4. Heidijoy says:

    didn’t even….not didn’t if

  5. TOfan says:

Heidijoy, I saw the one that asked for “more grit” LOL… I can see the headline now, “MoTab’s True Grit Gala” 😆

fyi, put David’s new blog at the end of the post, and Brian Mansfield’s USA Today interview is HERE … more songwriting & acting lessons in 2012! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Heidijoy says:

Ha! Great Headline. It reminded me of a guy’s comment after Motab. “I was disappointed David didn’t sing any of his POP songs” I was like WHAT????? WHAT DID HE WANT CRUSH WITH THE MOTAB CONCERT? I’m still shaking my head on that one.

      Love the USA interview.

In his more info for the blog: “I might have said Nokia Club instead of Club Nokia so sorry if I did I’m not a morning person lol.” Hahahaha I love him.

  7. Kizzi says:

David excited & happy, much, for the tour vlog is just ridiculous! Computer issues intertwined with the tour commentary was hYsTeRiCaL! Classic David.

Me thinks David is relishing his more sedate career pace. Making deliberate choices. Good for him!

  8. peppertara says:

Great post and great points TOfan. Yes, a magnificent live recording (in this case) certainly stands above and beyond the more tweeked, tuned and auto tuned albums it may be lumped in with and it is definitely worthy of great praise for David’s magnificent live singing with the choir! Well, many will witness the wonder of it all on PBS!
Love David’s little promo for the tour in his blog. Yes, the computer issues talk with the tour talk, funny David, haha.
Oh David…..Nokia Club, Club Nokia, Cokia Nlub, doesn’t matter…..’cause I will be there. 🙂
More songwriting and acting classes? Sounds good to me. Somewhere I read that David will be singing a new song called “My Kind Of Christmas”. Can’t remember where though…maybe true, maybe not. Whatever manifests on stage, from David, on this tour, will be stellar.

  9. refnaf says:

    eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep
Those reviewers know nothing about a live recording……………….
    keep ranting TOfan……..((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))

  10. silverfox says:

My Kind Of Christmas…is it here yet?

On my goodness..IT IS? Almost. Only 36 hours & counting down! It’s almost too much!

See you there, TOfan, refnaf, Kizzi & everyone else who will be in Westbury. I’ll be the one with the dazed look!

Well, one more sleep and it’s your turn to spazz away as only an Archie can. So stoke for you guys going to the Tour. Have a blast. Will watch out for vids, as usual haha

  12. jackryan4da says:

And may I interrupt the Christmas squeeing with my final batch of uploads from the CASBAA Concert? You see, I found the HDTV version of the concert…So, here I go again, LOL

PERFORMANCE VIDS HDTV 320kbps by CAMS 1 & 2 (same view of live stream)

    ENJOY!!!

For now, the vids on the playlist are just the individual songs. The full-length concert is still processing but will be added to the playlist one done.

  13. jackryan4da says:

For the HDTV MP3s, you can find them all here – per song & full-length concert audio (320 kbps)
    http://www.mediafire.com/myfiles.php#fil75bbfz9ddg

In the previous full-length HD MP3 posted 2-3 days ago, the audience reactions are louder. This HDTV version is studio quality – a must-have for all Archies.

Check ‘em out and feel the difference. Just be warned though – whether by watching or just by listening, a vortex beckons… tee-hee

Safe travels to all those going to see D

Awesome interview with Steven J. Rob by Pop City Life HERE.

    Fave part:
PCL: How are rehearsals for the tour going? What’s it like working with David?

Steven: Rehearsals are great! Every time we meet, the show content gets tighter and tighter. We have a couple more before the first show.

Working with David is super cool. I’ve said it before- It’s a pleasure working with an artist who is as adamant about putting on a great show, as he is talented- without the ego and superstar attitude. He’s down to earth, and we (the band) treat him like he’s one of the homies! We’ll go out, have lunch/dinner, and it’s a good hang! We’ve become friends.

PCL: What can fans expect from this tour?

Steven: The music, music, music, baby! This show is the most musical show I’ve played in, besides theater productions. It’s not just a pop concert, we have something for EVERYBODY!

    🙂 🙂 🙂

    • bluebar says:

Steven: The music, music, music, baby!

      • Heidijoy says:

  16. peppertara says:

So much I still have to catch up on, thanks to all for the great stuff. Thanks to JR too for the amazing uploads, will be watching those for sure! To everyone travelling to NY for those first epic shows…..have a fabulous, fun, exciting time! Safe travels everyone.
Love Steven’s description of the show:
“The music, music, music, baby! This show is the most musical show I’ve played in, besides theater productions. It’s not just a pop concert, we have something for EVERYBODY!”
    Yes, yes and yes!!
I think that poster up top says it all too, love it!

  17. jackryan4da says:

Before the MKOC TOUR MAYHEM begins, may I invite you to watch
David @ CASBAA HK Concert in HDTV GLORY (Cams 1&2) 320kbps

This concludes my update on the CASBAA Event. Enjoy!

  18. Kizzi says:

So the NYCB Theatre at Westbury says tomorrow at 8pm ET is David Archuleta w/Jeff LeBlanc.

Per that highly credible source ( 😀 ) Wikipedia on Jeff LeBlanc:
In early 2006, LeBlanc released his first four track demo entitled “Stories From a Small Town”. The album featured songs he wrote and recorded in his Sacred Heart University dorm room. In late 2006, he began touring colleges and venues on weekends while he continued to complete his college degree. In 2008, he did a headlining tour of over 40 colleges and universities throughout the east coast. Produced by Stephen Gause, his debut album “Signals” was independently released on September 15, 2009. The album landed licensing deals with MTV, VH1, E! Network and more. The lead single, “Until We Get It Right” was co-written with LeBlanc’s good friend, Joe Beleznay, who is noted for his successful solo career as well as his work with John Mayer.

Jeff has recently toured with artists such as Matt Nathanson, Augustana, Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Ingrid Michaelson, Vertical Horizon, Jon McLaughlin, Justin Nozuka and many more.

Lead single, “Until We Get it Right”…

Note comment: “why is this song not famous?” hmmmmmmmmmm
