David Archuleta finds The Other Side of Down

Super-sized by Ms. Beebee

Finally, after oh so many months of waiting, we are getting close to what we’ve all been waiting for — David’s sophomore album! Hard to believe it is less than two months away! And in those couple of months we fans have lots to do — buy/stream/request Something ‘Bout Love, spread the love for that song, and of course speculate about the title of the album “The Other Side of Down.”

What does that even mean? And does that title reflect the overall themes in the album?

According to David’s twitter: “There’s a few different reasons for the title :).” That doesn’t tell us too much, except that he seems to be happy with it and that some thought went into it. It seems to me that he definitely had some say in the title, don’t you think? I hope so anyway.

And knowing David Archuleta, that means there will be layers of hidden meanings, some of which may not get exposed until way later. He amazes me the way he can come up with so many different meanings for the same song (Example: Stand By Me for the troops), so I am excited to see how many ways this album title can be interpreted.

Peace out: Photo from the set of the SBL video shoot (from DA.com, click to enlarge 🙂 ).

The first time I heard the title I had no idea what it meant. I hadn’t mentally prepared myself for picking apart five words and trying to decipher meaning out of it, so I just thought it was a cool title. Different than other titles I’d heard. But after thinking about it for a while, I think he’s talking about staying positive in bad situations. Obviously, this is just my take on it, but the title reminds me of the saying “There are two sides to every coin.”

So, even if what you’re going through seems terrible (“down”) there’s always something good about it (“the other side”), if you look at it differently. To me, “The Other Side of Down” gives off an “Every cloud has a silver lining” message, which I think is SO David. And I am hoping that theme is reflected in the songs on the album, because David singing uplifting/inspiring songs is exactly what I wanted from this album.

But, as David tweeted, there’s more than one reason for the title, so I started thinking of all the other possible reasons behind it. And you know what? I couldn’t think of any! I have a terrible time of thinking up multiple answers for one question (which is one of the reasons why I am terrible at crosswords. I think of one answer to the clue, but if it doesn’t fit I can not think of anything else. I just keep thinking of the same thing over and over).

So I decided to survey my family instead and I asked them what they thought “The Other Side of Down” meant. (I did not tell them it was David related though, because otherwise they probably would not have answered). Here’s what they said:

17-year-old brother: “Obviously it means up… or happy. One or the other”

Mom: “I think it must mean the upside. As opposed to the downside.”

9-year-old cousin: “Down to the left or down to the right, whatever that means. This is about David Archuleta isn’t it?”

Aunt: “The other side of down must be up.”

12-year-old brother: “I think it means if you’re like sad and then someone makes you happy again. Like the sadness won’t last forever.”

So there you go — my family is no more insightful than I am 😛

What do you guys think? What do you think the meaning behind the title is? Do you like it? Do you think this gives us a hint to what the album will be like? I’d love to hear what everyone else thinks of “The Other Side of Down”!

TOfan – loved that you quizzed your family and LOL at what your 9 year old cousin said, “This is about David Archuleta isn’t it?” – hahaha – our friends and family know us very well don’t they!

I think the title means that we should remember to look on the bright side b/c that is how David views life – he always sees the good in even the worst situations.

What continues to amaze me is the fact that, at my age, I continue to learn from a 19 year old! If just the title of this album makes us think and be more aware just imagine what the songs will do!!

    • TOfan says:

ackkkk, this is ALL abanana77’s post (I just put the pictures in & forgot to change the post name, now fixed! Sorry ab77!!!)

    • awestruck says:

Ditto to “What continues to amaze me is the fact that, at my age, I continue to learn from a 19 year old! If just the title of this album makes us think and be more aware just imagine what the songs will do!!”

abanana – “9-year-old cousin: “Down to the left or down to the right, whatever that means. This is about David Archuleta isn’t it?” I think you are BUSTED! I actually think his answer is the most creative of your famiy…

The Other Side of Down(under?) Though that would make the answer the Northern Hemisphere?!?

I havn’t a clue as to an alternate meaning, lol

Interesting that I thought the same thing about Stand By Me.

  3. awestruck says:

    spam, spam, spam…

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE that chair pic and the unadulterated ‘happy’ on David’s face, the pose ain’t bad either, lol

  4. rox says:

my husband said it’s because he couldn’t use the title ‘Up’ ; it was already taken. I think your family is spot on and that the Jonah/David vid that’s playing above is an example of ‘the other side of down.’ Will be fun to hear David’s take 🙂

  5. barbs says:

Another meaning could be coming out of depression. Coming out on the other side after being “down.”

It could also refer to being a rebel in the music industry. Taking a different slant against the current music trends, as represented by the Jay Sean song “Down.”

  6. I says:

verse LOL ….chorus LOL….bridge….LOL….END LOL hahahahaha

    from Venezuela LOL

  7. embe says:

David is such a clever guy. He doesn’t force the “happy happy joy joy” mentality on anyone, but instead offers it subtly, through an album title, or discovering double-meanings behind songs that have been heard millions of times. He renewed “Stand By Me” by turning it into a gesture of support for the troops.

I’m too tired to write anything else. But gawd I love him.

  8. TOfan says:

WAAAAY, off-topic, but some amazing fans tweeted me the link to *drum roll* … THE BOOTS!!!!

    • awestruck says:

Quite expensive – I can’t see him spending that much, lol… I’m thinking we can take up a collection, group together and gift him a pair!

  9. refnaf says:

    Abanana, nice post!!!
“There are two sides to every coin.” makes sense to me. I love that the title is a bit quirky. Coming out the other side of something that is a downer…like going through a dark tunnel in your life…. there is always light at the end…It also reminds me of an interviews (forget where) where he mentions AI contestants crossing the bridge of AI from their “normal” lives, to lives with a music career. You come out the other side with something positive… IDK…distracted by those expensive boots….

    • archiesfan4life says:

      ref, “like going through a dark tunnel in your life…. there is always light at the end” – you have no idea how much I needed to read that tonight. Thanks! {{{{HUGS}}}}

  10. TOfan says:

abanana, have been thinking about this since reading your great post (love your fam’s reactions, btw!).

I keep coming back to the line in ZG, “Up’s the only way that I know how to fall” … the way he juxtaposes falling with up reminds me of “other side of down” … does that make any sense?

And as refnaf and barbs said above, instead of the opposite of down, more about when you get through the darkness, you’ll get to the other side and see light. (also like the rebel idea, barbs! 🙂 )

abanana, I really love what your 12 yr old brother said, “I think it means if you’re like sad and then someone makes you happy again. Like the sadness won’t last forever.”

Whoah, that is one deep little brother you have there!

  11. abanana77 says:

barbs, refnaf, Tofan – I totally NEVER thought of it as the coming through a rough time and I love that so much! Actually now I am thinking about it that way and I like it better. Hahaha. Well I like both 🙂 I find it funny that none of my family thought of it like that. We must all think alike or something…

And TOfan, love the ZG lyric! It fits so well 🙂

  12. Zoe says:

Hey Abanana, you’ve given me some food for thought…….which is quite satisfying since I haven’t eaten dinner yet and was feeling pretty hungry. LOL

For me, one of David’s most endearing qualities is his youthful optimism. It practically oozes out of every pore of that P90x toned body (sorry… couldn’t help myself!) 😉

Time and time again, he seems to put a positive spin on whatever challenges he faces, and he encourages us to do the same, through his singing, his writing, his interviews, his talks with youth groups and women’s conferences, his vlogs and blogs. He is a true blue channeler of positivity, and we, his fans, can’t help but feel its effects on us.

Let’s face it. You can’t get through life without having the down times. David knows this as well as any of us, as he’s had to face some pretty tough ones himself. It’s a theme that he doesn’t shy away from. So as he said, whether it’s going through difficulties in a romantic relationship, or with family or friends, having health or financial issues, self-doubts, etc., the theme can relate to any number of “downs”.

But David seems determined to channel a sense of optimism and hope when facing whatever life’s challenges are, and I agree with your interpretation that the “Other Side of Down” speaks to the “Every cloud has a silver lining” message, which I, too, agree is “SO David”.

I fully expect that this theme will be reflected in many of his new songs. “David singing uplifting/ inspiring songs is exactly what I (ALSO!) want from this album.” 🙂

  13. Zoe says:

Now for those of you who haven’t seen the YUMMY shot of David at the video shoot – check out his OS (click on Behind the Video Shoot)

    And TOfan, don’t say I didn’t warn ya about the YOU-KNOW-WHATS!! 😉

  14. peppertara says:

Very nice post abanana…..The Other Side of Down, the album, I’m sure will hold some clues as to the meaning behind the title. Enjoyed reading your family’s responses!
Yes, I think David always sees the learning experience in any challenge he has faced in his 19 yrs and that is a very positive thing. Always a light at the end of the tunnel is a good quote from David that shows his positive attitude towards life and faith. All the responses here say it pretty well. I think we are in for a real treat with this album, especially with David’s own songs…hope a lot of them make the album.
Of course there could be many other hidden meanings. There is always the other side of (duck) down. Could be a hidden meaning there.
I kid of course! Being silly here, ha.

I’m so looking forward to the real Other Side of Down, reflected in David’s album!

I’m still looking forward to David explaining the reason for the title. Kind of hoping he will do that in a vlog, explaining in his wonderful, sweet way.

  15. Abanana77 says:

Zoe – I also LOVE his optimism. It completely astounds me too and really makes him glow. “it practically oozes out of every pore of that P90x toned body”. Lol!

  16. emmegirl says:

abanna – gotta say I’m diggin your brothers description, very insightful. Pretty smart guy… does he write songs, lol!

TOfan, thank you for the lovely justjared pics.

    Perfection.

    (David, the knucklecracker, lol)

  17. embe says:

I’m having double vision, my left arm hurts, I have chest pains and am about to pass out. One would think I was having a heart attack. But no. I only looked at the JustJared photos of David in A SEE-THROUGH SKIN-TIGHT T-SHIRT EXPOSING ALL KINDS OF MUSCLES I HAVEN’T SEEN BEFORE.

I can’t take this anymore. I’m just a shadow of what I used to be……… and I drool more than my dogs….. Hurts.. hurts so much…

  18. awestruck says:

This may be a bit far fetched, but here goes anyway. The obvious opposite of down is up, but it wasn’t until I was in my car, sitting in traffic, blaring Zero Gravity and singing along that ‘and you show me how to fly – ’cause with you I can fly’ led me to thinking about this post abanana and thinking of flying and… beyond. I wonder if one of the meanings was of a spiritual nature beyond flying, up to the heavens. Not that I would normally think of this coming from a pop album title, but it IS David.

  19. TOfan says:

Off-topic, but have you guys seen this pic? Can’t only superheroes bend their fingers like this? Ouch!

    http://is.gd/dDDJz

    • Zoe says:

Jeepers! Does look like he’s doing a 180 on that poor digit!

And since when is David anything LESS than a SUPERHERO?? Bwhahahaha!!

      I like Emmegirl’s new nickname:

      “David, the knucklecracker”.

      Just don’t call him a knucklehead! 🙂

  20. refnaf says:

TOfan!!!! How is that even possible??? So now I am convinced he is not real… he is from someplace far away…..Krypton

  21. embe86 says:

Ok, so this is off-topic, but I need to ask some advice on wordpress. See, I got an invite from SoulDavid, which said to login to wordpress using the same username I have over at SoulDavid. The thing is, that I’ve always commented there (and here, and the Voice and Orly) using my email, so I don’t have a password!

So, now I clicked on “forgot password?” so they’d send me a new one and they did, only it’s some kind of space language. Now I’d like to change it into something a little more memorable, but don’t know how to. HELP?? I went through this same password issue when I first got my article posted here at snowangelzz – I’d rather just post using my email like in the olden days 😛

    • embe86 says:

Oh, and Orlyy doesn’t approve my wordpress account 😦 I can’t login for whatever reason. Why does wordpress hate me???

BTW, still in pain ’cause of the JustJared pics. Pulse varies from 5 to 370. Not looking good.

      • awestruck says:

pulse rate low, do we need the paddles???

Re wordpress, TOfan can correct me if I am wrong here, but try going to wordpress.com, then login (upper leftish tab of screen, sign in with the password they sent you. Upper left go to My Account drop down menu, Users, Personal Settings… scroll down to the bottom of the page to Account Details… hope this works

      • TOfan says:

Embe, we are here for you … bib & paddles standing by … remain hydrated at all times.

oh, and re WordPress, follow awestruck’s advice and hopefully that will work!

  22. abanana77 says:

WOW that finger does look impossibly not attached to his hand. Weird.

I never knew David was a knuckle cracker! I ramdomly started cracking my knuckles like 6 months ago and it became a really bad habit. But then like a month ago I decided to quit cold turkey because I hated it so much (and I wanted to see if I could stop). And except for a few slip ups at the beginning I have successfully broken the habit. Haha so I guess I am a recovering knuckle cracker. 😛

    • TOfan says:

wow, abanana, I think David would appreciate knowing that recovery is an option! 🙂

I have this vision of you standing up at a KCA (Knuckle Cracker Anonymous) meeting: “Hello. My name is abanana77 and I am a recovering knuckle cracker.”

      😆

  23. jackryan4DA says:

Have you guys seen this? I think it is a good video to re-tweet and onpass

    MusicNationHD’s review of SBL

What I like most in this endorsement is that it is coming from someone in David’s age-bracket.

And re those Pro-Am pix, am still reciting my mantra – He is young enuff to be my son… He is young enuff to be my son…

    • TOfan says:

      JR, LOOOOOVE that MusicNation endorsement!

Have never heard SBL broken down quite like that. And yes, nice that he’s David’s age (and burps during filming the way D. does too … what IS that about??? lol)

And the “download it illegally” comment. ROTFLMAO … makes him seem more honest IMO.

Pro-Am pix need to make it onto the CD somehow… just sayin’ 🙂

      • embe says:

“nice that he’s David’s age (and burps during filming the way D. does too … what IS that about??? lol)”

David might be the most angelic, painfully attractive creature on planet Earth… but he IS still a GUY.

  24. awestruck says:

JR – VERY nice promo, though I kinda choked at the end when he said you could buy it … or “download it illegally like me”

PS do you need a bib too? LOLOL

  25. TOfan says:

    NEWSFLASH!!!!!

Acc. to the amazing @pastelpastel, Canadian fans can now officially request SBL on CHUMfm using the form HERE:

    GO TEAM GO!!!!

    🙂 🙂 🙂

  26. stenocruiser says:

    Thanks TOfan — and pastel
    Requested!

  27. Zoe says:

Embe: “David might be the most angelic, painfully attractive creature on planet Earth… but he IS still a GUY.”

    Bwahahaha!!!!

Happens all the time with the guys in my life.

At least when it happens to David, HE’s polite enough to say “excuse me” 😉

    • embe says:

Yeah, David’s always polite about it. I have never met a guy like him (my fiance belches and passes gas like it’s something to be proud of – next thing I know he’ll buy a decibel meter and starts keeping score of the volume).

  28. peppertara says:

I’ve just requested the song with Chumfm too. That’s great that it’s on their request list! I have been requesting with my local radio here but so far don’t think they’ve played it. Don’t know if they’ve added it yet or not.
Just heard Crush on my local station (they still play it every day) and they always mention that last year it was the no. 1 song on their top 20, those were good times! I am hoping that SBL will be played soon and be the new no. 1 song!
The new pics from the sports event are showing a mighty fine young man (all grown up it seems).
Still can’t get over that flexibility, double jointed(ness) side of David….that finger position is startling! Oh the many sides of Mr. Archuleta.
Still admiring that great cover art for the album (I’m kind of hoping it will be the cover). David relaxed and happy in that chair, seems sooo…..like David. It’s a very lovely, cool and natural portrayal of David (to me). I’m thinking maybe those are his own boots, think he would tend to like those! I think they are pretty cool myself as is the young man connected to them.
