A little somethin’ somethin’ ’bout love: Part 1

Remember this comment I made on the “To Snippet or Not to Snippet” post:

“Well I did snippet this one… catchy, yup radio friendly, lyrics so far sound light (but will have to make my final decision on that once I hear them ALL). If it is a David song, then I think he has deeper meaning in his lyrics… will appeal to the youngun’s and make me feel young again, lol. I have a feeling that he will have something for the ‘older’ crowd on the CD though.”

Now that I have heard the whole song, I heartily agree with myself! 🙂

And along with enjoying the song on its own terms, once again, I am impressed with David’s instinctive knowledge of what will work in a given situation.  Recognizing pop music for what it is today, he takes this understanding, incorporates his must-have-meaning lyrics and delivers a contemporary song that will appeal to so many – on whatever level it reaches out to you.

As a fan, I appreciate knowing David’s intent behind his lyrics while still enjoying the stick-in-my-mind melody.  New fans will no doubt enjoy the groovatude of the song and interpret the lyrics that have meaning to them.  This reflects the power and beauty of the song.

This is def. the nicest beanie I've had so far. (Pic: DC on Heels Facebook)

Some say David is not highlighting his vocals with this song.  I beg to differ.  Compared with the other Top-40 pop tunes out there, David’s voice is actually recognizable, and the sound effects … effective!

Some say he is selling himself short with this song.  But if the intent is to get played on the radio, to make people want to buy his upcoming album – then he will likely be highly successful with this as a lead-off single.

It is a style of music we have not heard to date from David and I say kudos to him for stepping outside his comfort zone.

What isn’t new, however, is David’s deep desire to sing — and to write — songs with personal meaning for him. Don’t get me wrong – I love the upbeat, lively, catchy melody and can enjoy it without dwelling on the deeper meaning. But that deeper meaning is there. As NeonLimelight noted:

“Although the beat of the song will have you moving, the lyrics give the song substance – substance that is sorely missing from most songs in heavy rotation on the radio currently.”

When I read that review, I wondered if the writer had watched David’s Honolulu interview, where he explains the message behind the music:

“It’s a pop album again, so this is the second pop album I’ll be doing.  The single is a very up-tempo … very ‘radio’ song… so it’s kind of for the summer.  It’s called Something ‘Bout Love and it’s about how people do feel frustrated a lot about love and how it can be hard at times, but there is something about it that’s worth it, and that you shouldn’t give up on … I don’t know if it really is the best song to kind of reflect the rest of the album because…  But it is, you know, but I think that these songs have a lot more meaning in them.  Like they’re really messages I believe in so that’s what I am really excited about.  Even though, you know it’s a kind of an up-tempo fun song it still has a meaningful thing to me and the rest of the songs are even more kind of personal — personal to me.  There are things like my own thoughts and my own ideas and kind of my own situations, so I’m really excited to be able to have this album come out and show more of me and my personality, and just, be more real.  I think that’s the best way people can relate and connect to your music, ’cause if you connect to it and feel like people will be able to connect to it better too.”

Or his similar explanation in his July 4th vlog:

“It’s an up-tempo more fun song for the summer. It’s a song about people getting frustrated with love and how a lot of people can get hurt by situations whether it’s with a relationship or with a family member, your parents, or someone you just care about. I think everyone goes through those situations of love and even though it’s kind of different for everybody, I think we’ve all had those same kinds of emotions and even though people have gone through that and feel frustrated at times there’s still something about love that you still shouldn’t give up on. And there’s still something that’s worth it.”

Why does he feel SBL doesn’t reflect the rest of the album? And why has he gone to some length to explain the meaning behind the lyrics? Hmm, points to ponder. What do you think?

Yay awestruck> I think this song is ready to go BIG. I agree with your agreement to yourself…. lol!
I need to get ready for work by will BBL to ponder the questions…. they are very interesting ones!

Hello mamusan *waves* from last thread!

awestruck – love this article – it makes me think …. and laugh (“I heartily agree with myself”) LOL

I love SBL for many reasons – it makes me feel happy .. and young:). Then after reading David’s explanation about how it is a song about our love, not only in a relationship, but with friends and family – everyone – I found myself really thinking about that. I find that to be a beautiful and very needed message – at least it is for me. He is an old soul!

I will ponder on your very good questions at the end.

Sorry, I don’t have much time right now so I can’t yet comment on your cool article. Just dropped by to post this old interview, where David actually DANCES salsa a bit. I’ve come to notice a lot of you ladies would love to see David embrace his latin dancing skills and bust a move, so here ya go 😀

  4. TOfan says:

awestruck, great post, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about the meaning behind SBL, maybe more so than some of David’s other more “serious” songs. The whole concept that the joy of love outweighs the pain it can bring kinda blows my mind for an “up-tempo more fun song for the summer.”

And when you say, “Compared with the other Top-40 pop tunes out there, David’s voice is actually recognizable,” that is so true … but I find it very sad that in order to fit in on radio today, David has to “hide” that incredible voice of his. But as you say, “he recognizes pop music for what it is today” and tries to celebrate what he loves about it and add his own heart and message to the mix.

    Embe,
LOVE that interview, so cool to watch again … and his expression when he calls his songs his “little pride and joys”??? *melts*

    Breaking news!

    From mjsbigblog:
David Archuleta is getting ready to shoot the video for his new single “Something “Bout Love”

Details from a casting call reveal that David will be reunited with “Crush” director, Declan White Bloom and will be shot on July 16 in Los Angeles.

The video concept is described as “Young live and good times style concept.”

The production is looking for a lead girl:

Lead / Female / Caucasian, Ethnically Ambiguous / 18-24 yrs old. Cute charming beautiful young lady with a little bit of edge. Think an American Apparel model look. Need an actress for this role as opposed to a model.

They are also looking for skateboarders:

Featured / Male or Female / All Ethnicities / 18-24 yrs old
Highly experienced skater. If you can’t pull off a 360 kick flip clean,
bonless, or ollie a 6 step with a mute grab you’re not what were looking for.

I’ll assume the lead male will be David. Heh.

    Full story HERE.

I like how David has his own spot on MJ’s, as opposed to being together with the Idol Headlines for the day grouping. She seems to be doing this more and more, lol. Great promo at any rate.

refnaf – AF4L – on agreeing with myself… I laughed too. I did, in a roundabout way in a draft of this article mean this, but thanks to TOfan – who has a marvelously humorous way of condensing to the point – it ended up this way!

embe – I love that interview! He did a great job – repsonded to the interviewers calm, no silly questions style. And he did well picking picture #C! I’m wondering where 4 went though when he said ‘I only know the basics now… 1, 2, 3 – 5,6,7,8’

TOfan – It’s through a curve at you David again, and uptempo song with a heartfelt meaning – life brings you sadness and pain, but also provides a way for you to find comfort and joy. This seems to be a recurring theme in many of David written songs.

  7. abanana77 says:

awestruck – I love this! And those are super good pondering questions! I had actually never read that quote from the Honolulu interview where he says SBL doesn’t reflect the rest of the album (where was I?????) and that is very interesting. Makes me excited for the album! And I think he wants everyone to know that some actual thought went into the lyrics and that they’re not just written to appeal to the tween audience. I feel like he’s trying to get his way out of that stereotype while still getting radio airplay (which is a pretty hard thing to do). Especially when your lyrics are not extremely sexual – it looks like you are writing music for 12 year olds, and I think he is trying to separate himself from that a bit. I dunno, that’s just my thought on the matter.

  8. emmegirl says:

    Love your thoughts awestruck!

I agree, his vocals are amazing, this song in no way diminishes that; and if he never sang an uptempo song like this critics would still say he is a one trick pony (even those arguments are so ridiculous by now that they are laughable.)

Most up temp/pop/techno/dance songs have very surface lyrics where any real connection on a deeper level is not a goal. With SBL, as you mentioned, the lyrics have a deeper context and even while you are bouncing around bopping to the song, you are receiving this wonderful, positive, warm feeling of understanding, compassion and hope. He encompasses it all so brilliantly.

You all have probably seen this, but this piano cover is absolutely beautiful and it really helps you appreciate the beauty of this melody.

    • awestruck says:

wow, just wow This is the first time that I listened to this. When I saw the lyrics in the upper left hand corner, I was going to ignore them and just listen, but I got pulled in and heard David singing the lyrics in my head. Why is this so beautiful? Could it be, could it be that David will do this song this way – at the piano – when touring. I know, I know how could he take an amazing dancy upbeat tune that everyone will know in that way (I’m thiniking it will be big on the radio) and do it diferently in concert. BUT OH I WISH! whispers – can you just imagine?

      • TOfan says:

wow is right! I hadn’t heard that before either. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful … acoustic live version FTW!!! 🙂

      • emmegirl says:

I know, I was so conflicted when listening to this because I love SBL just the way it is, and yet I was doing the same thing – imagining him singing it with a piano accompaniment.

  9. embe says:

“Why does he feel SBL doesn’t reflect the rest of the album? And why has he gone to some length to explain the meaning behind the lyrics?”

I think David said SBL isn’t the best representative for the album because at first listen it might come off as a fluffy, light radio dance song. But it’s way deeper. Perhaps he’s hinting, that the other songs sound “deeper” or more organic instantly. I dunno lol.

And the reason that David explained the lyrics might be, that he wants all people to able to relate to them. Take a 30-year-old guy for example. He might think SBL is another poppy song about crushes and heartbreak, and that it has nothing to offer to him.

But that guy could have a troubled relationship with his father – maybe his dad doesn’t approve his lifestyle, or has always pushed him and demanded unreasonable success from him etc.

Then David points out all the different aspects SBL covers – love between a couple, love between a child and a parent, love between siblings – and that guy with the dad-issues starts to hear SBL in a different light.

David KNOWS he is not the only one dealing with hurtful issues with his father, and being the lovely, emphathetic person that he is, he wants people to know that you CAN overcome those traumas, the self-accusations and become a strong, confident human being despite of all that. Though David doesn’t talk about the situations that happened or what his dad did, he does want to address the matter enough to inspire and comfort others, be it through a song or just a simple mention in a vlog.

Gosh, sorry this is so long!

    • Geralyn says:

Usually, work of insurance commissioner is a selected place. These picked to QuotesChimp who plan to go back to it after public-service and significant place have typically been individuals that have created their vocations in the insurance business. Their outlooks regularly reveal biases and insurance market outlooks. By creating the post aesthetic instead of appointive, the standpoint of the customers, when they’re structured and watchful, may need to be taken into consideration. This will decrease the energy of the sector to command those of US in the standing to modify them-and can make existence a lot simpler for the buyer.

  10. awestruck says:

embe – never too long, love your thoughts. Quite possibly David did indeed write this song with his Dad in mind. But, even if he didn’t, does the idea not allow that 30 year old guy a way to connect to the song. But, yes, I agree that the beauty of David’s meaninful lyrics so let’s this happen – people of any age can take their own situations and the song becomes meaningful to them in a special way. Is this part of what it means when David says the power of a song???

    • embe says:

“Does the idea not allow that 30 year old guy a way to connect to the song”

Well, I just can’t think of any guy in their thirties listening – and I mean REALLY listening – to SBL looking for “meaning” and depth. Sure there are those that are familiar with David and interested in his artistry so they can dig deeper. But the “average” (and I hate that word) young man isn’t David’s target audience – it’s those that truly understand his talent who are going to be able to appreciate SBL as a thoughtful song, not just a radio-friendly pop carol.

embe – I certainly did NOT take that as harsh… it’s all hypothetical anyway right? Just an example… Ok, so I don’t know yet how to make a smiley so I’ll try it this way 🙂 I figure so long as ‘they’ get caught up by the catchy melody that there is a chance they will actually listen to the lyrics… and then there will be those that hear it and only listen to it for fun, or because their girlfriend likes it etc… it’s all good.

Especially when your lyrics are not extremely sexual – it looks like you are writing music for 12 year olds, and I think he is trying to separate himself from that a bit.”

Trust David to push himself outside the box while using the avenue of rado play to reach the masses. He could easily become the ‘indie’ artist who sends his message in a more subdude way (which might suit his personality better), yet he chooses to do it his way. He amazes me as to how he continues to push past his fears, to reach out to as many as he can.

  12. TOfan says:

    emmegirl,
“Most up temp/pop/techno/dance songs have very surface lyrics where any real connection on a deeper level is not a goal.” I read your comment right after reading almost the same view in my newspaper’s review of Kylie Minogue’s new CD.

They gave her CD a great review (3 stars out of 4) but titled it “Kylie hasn’t got much to say — but who cares?” LOL

This part reminded me of our discussion here:
“One of the oldest battles in the culture wars is about seriousness. Pop music is considered inherently frivolous because it was designed for mass consumption, to be used up and tossed away.

“To which pop partisans have replied that the means of production had nothing to do with seriousness of intent, and that much popular music was indeed deep, profound and culturally resonant, with examples cited from Ray Charles to the Beatles to Madonna. And so on. You could get a degree arguing this stuff (and a number of people have).

“That said, there’s nothing wrong with being frivolous. If there were, why would God have given us Kylie Minogue?….”

eeek embe, now I’m the one writing a thesis! LOL

. HOWEVER, Woman B claimed she had never said ahntying to A about my wife spreading the rumors and that she was simply concerned about her. She was sorry, apologized, but understood if my wife didn’t trust her as a friend. My wife was hurt, but choose to forgive woman B and move on and attempt to repair things with woman A.The next morning, woman B went to A and told her what my wife had done to her. Woman A was concerned about the accuracy of the information she was getting from B. Woman A asked her again if she was sure that what she had said at the party was true, including the party about my wife telling many different people and maliciously attempting to start the rumors. B said this was all true again, and that my wife was really upset with A and wanted to bring her down with what she said.A week later, my wife tried to talk to woman A to apologize for what was said. Woman A would not even look at my wife. She said she was done with her as a friend. She explained that woman B had come back to her to tell her she had been talking about her AGAIN, and she reiterated about the fact she had been spreading the rumors maliciously and my wife wanted to hurt woman A. None of this was true. Woman A called my wife a slew of fowl language in front of me, in front of dozens of her close friends and in front of many of my wife’s friends. She stated that she was lying because woman B had said these things to her twice, and that she wouldn’t lie.My wife is woman A’s boss. Woman A is letting this effect her work. Woman A has cut off all communication with my wife outside of work. Woman B is now completely avoiding my wife entirely as well as woman B’s husband, who is a close friend of mine.My wife forgave them both for what happened. Several weeks has passed. I have a hard time forgiving these people and wanted them to ever be back at our home. They were both very good friends of my wife’s and now she feels alone and isolated because her two best friends destroyed their friendship. I even lost a close friend. The collateral damage goes very deep, since these were mutual friends of almost everyone we know.My wife wants me to move on, but I have such a hard time with that. My wife was trying to do the biblically accurate thing to hold a fellow sister in christ accountable and her other sister in christ; who was not a new christian, but a strong one, threw it in her face. She broke her trust not once, but twice.I just think she doesn’t need to be friends with these people if this is how they treat their relationships. I don’t feel comfortable having them around my home if this is what they choose to do.What do you think?

      • Surya says:

People in the church tend to over-emphasize their quest for Spiritual Gifts. We must serve God in the area of our geeifdntss, but we must spend more time on building our relationship with Him. Too often it is all about us and what we can do; rather, it should be what God is doing and perhaps I can serve Him. By developing our relationship with God, we can know that it is• God’s will that we think rightly about ourselves;• God’s will that we have meaning and purpose in life (Col 1:16) for His glory (1 Cor 10:31) and for our transformed life (Rom 12:1-2);• God’s will that we experience contentment in life (Phil 4:11-12), and• God’s will for us to be secure (Rom 8:28-29).Only now are we ready to do what God wants us to do and to serve Him with a pure heart. Knowing and understanding God’s word takes hard work and commitment.

    ((((EMBE))))

I was wondering all day while at work, what David might be singing today. Angels is one of my top 10…. another version for my dpod and woah… very nice!

Ababnana77 “I think he wants everyone to know that some actual thought went into the lyrics and that they’re not just written to appeal to the tween audience. I feel like he’s trying to get his way out of that stereotype while still getting radio airplay (which is a pretty hard thing to do). Especially when your lyrics are not extremely sexual – it looks like you are writing music for 12 year olds” I think this is so true…. seems that most pop songs are either very bubblegum or very explicit… these lyrics are niether….plus they apply to everyone….perahaps the production turned out more pop sounding than he intended??
In the something pitchy interview I remember him saying something about wanting to get to the point where he can do deeper more soulful stuff, but has to go from point a to b to c, that he can’t just go to c right away. Something like that. (I will need to re-listen) When I hear that acoustic version… oh my, yes!!! Would love D to do it like that!
I will be glad if the rest of the album is not as pop as SBL, David keeps saying it, so it must be true…..

TOfan that article about Kylie…. so true, pop music can say something, maybe it just hasn’t for a while? I do not listen to enough to really know much about what is hot right now.

awestruck… “the beauty of David’s meaninful lyrics so let’s this happen – people of any age can take their own situations and the song becomes meaningful to them in a special way. Is this part of what it means when David says the power of a song???”…. I think this is exactly what David may mean. Songs can hit you right where you are… and he has also said that even the melody has an effect. SBL’s up beat sound makes you feel good, and the key change at the end really intensifies that… I think he really does know what he is doing!

refnaf – ah, the power of a song… take Anels acapella for instance, my mind is spinning right now.

TOfan – I love those tweets from @Makinsey, can’t wait to ‘hear’ more. I have a question though, how did she manange to do her job and do all that tweeting too?

    • TOfan says:

LOL, I think the first couple were “on the job” but she madly tweeted the rest after she got home. Turns out her mom works at the store & she was just helping out for the day. Nice!!!!!

      Here are a couple more:
someone’s ringtone went off & it was “Zero Gravity” & David looks up & started cracking up & then he started singing along 🙂

oh by the way, he reads every letter. we went back to the office & he was back there reading them with his mom… it was adorable. he was like reading it out loud to his mom.

Oh, and check out FOD’s latest post for Pastel’s hilarious tips for how David can get from Nevada to Toronto for another book signing here in Canada. 😆

  22. abanana77 says:

awestruck – I am seriously LOLing at you discovering how to do smiley faces! 🙂 😀 😛

And oh gosh Angels. Acapella. Really kills me. Angels gets me every time. I could listen to David singing that for the rest of my life.

TOfan – interesting tweets! I love how he stayed until 2 because he tweeted it even though everyone was gone by 1:30. <3333 Stuff like that kills me. And I like how he doesn't flaunt his Make-a-Wish thing. Like in his tweet he just said "awesome folks" when talking about the helicopter ride. You know how some celebrities you get the impression they are only involved in causes to look good? But David is so the real deal. He makes it not about himself but about the kids. I mean he was looking at the kids looking at the President instead of looking at the President in those pics from the white house. That still gets me every time.

refnaf – that is very interesting about the point a to point b to point c. (To be honest I have never watched the something pitchy interview. I know. I'm crazy.) But I think that is very wise of David to realize that. It's gotta be kinda a gradual shift.

Awestruck I agree. Radio play is a huge factor.I think the qusiteon for me as I’ve read through the preliminary hopes expressed in fan sites and then media & radio reviews is: Will Something e28098Bout Love, and the rest of the album, be a stepping stone or a quantum leap? David has the right look and sound to be a pop music icon. His hairdo is a cross between Elvis Presley and Orlando Bloom and the camera never fails to catch a myriad of candid expressions and poses that are simply brilliant. But it is also his song craft, with his message infused lyrics, unique timbre and his soulful hooks that, imho, will capture the long-term attention of listeners. What I am particularly looking forward to is his live versions. He always improves and deepens his studio originals and brings an intimacy to his songs with an inviting, front-porch feel from his heart to his audiences.

Awestruck….loved your blog. SBL defintely still does reflect David’s heart and soul I think. He sings this uptempo dancy song with a passion and amazing, soaring vocals. The lyrics are certainly a part of David. When I watched his last Vlog and heard him talk about the different kinds of relationships, I could see it was personal for him too..in his own family and with his parents, aww. The lyrics to this song most definitely stand out and with substance as Neon Limelight said (love them, they always give great props to David). I’m thinking maybe this song was written with a more organic feel to it (it really is a lovely song) but the label wanted to rev it up and make it more radio friendly with what is played today. Better chance of being a hit on the radio…probably. I get my fix of this song every day, there is something ’bout this song!
Love the videos of David’s performance in Vegas, oh I still have a wish to see David sing Angels live, haven’t had the opportunity yet!
So much happening with this young man….have a feeling things will only get bigger and better.
Perhaps the rest of the album will have a more acoustic or organic sound to it. We know David has put a lot of his heart and mind into writing songs and hopefully, many of them will make the album. Think he did a pretty great job with his new single!
So much to read, so much to discuss…but I’ll stop here for now. Enjoying everyone’s posts here.

    morning all

peppertara – I will have to have another look see at his vlog to re-listen. You said “I’m thinking maybe this song was written with a more organic feel to it” This certainly could be – if you get a chance listen to the piano cover that emmegirl posted at 12:25 yesterday. I can SOO hear David singing this while playing the piano. Somehow, though, I think David (by the sounds of it) had lots of artistic control for this album and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he choose to do it uptempo. This would be a great question for a fan to ask… and it would be cool to know how he intended it to be done.

  29. Kizzi says:

Great read awestruck. It is very interesting to see the explanation David has taken time to make about the meaning of SBL. As time goes on hopefully we will have a clearer sense of what he is relaying about the meaning & origins of the lyrics.

It’s so good to hear David speak more on his work, and that he has myriad opportunities and obvious marketing push for his upcoming single and album. I am very excited that he is focused on promoting his music even if in his own self-effacing way.

I really took note of his inclusion in the activities around Capital 4th and am hopeful of his connection with Jimmy Smits (remember 1st seeing him in L.A. Law). This appears to me to be a milestone in terms of connections and being recognized on a broader scale.

One can be uber talented and deserving but in the end, success in the entertainment world is about connections, networking, and reputation. Since reputation is a given, then it is the connections and networking that has to evolve for a broader audience to embrace David’s music over time. That’s happening now and it is a joy to see it unfold.

Embe – I agree with your take on SBL and its audience. The video planned supposedly has a call for skateboarders in it – serious skaters at that which definitely sends a clear message that the song is about youth and young love in my estimation. So even if there is a broader meaning for a broader audience in the lyrics, the music is pure Pop and about young love.

When I first listened to the song it struck me as about romantic love vs. the more universal platonic love. After David’s explanation in his vlog and other interviews of the lyrics, I did listen and could then glean a more universal meaning of the lyrics but imho I can’t see it being taken that way by the casual listener or buyer who listen via radio or in snippets on iTunes or the like for downloading.

Since David is developing his voice in prose, he already excels at song 😀 , I think we will find out more as the song is released and he expresses his sense of its meaning over time.

But I have to agree that SBL isn’t targeting 30 yr old men or even ….mumble-mumble-mumble… year old woman like me. Do I like the song—yes, very much, AND primarily because it’s David’s voice and my hope for his long term career success in music. My wish is for the youth and young adults who buy Pop singles and albums to LOVE the song and RELATE to it “en masse.” And who knows, maybe that demographic will relate to the more universal meaning of the lyrics.

What I especially find gratifying is his identification as a singer/songwriter/author versus just “American Idol runner up.”

It’s going to be a fun summer. Cheers!

  31. awestruck says:

    Kizzi – hi!

I agree that most will take the lyrics to be about young love, especially with the direction of the video shoot. My conundrum is that David has really made the effort to explain the lyrics… so perhaps peppertara is right – “When I watched his last Vlog and heard him talk about the different kinds of relationships, I could see it was personal for him too..in his own family and with his parents” – and he wrote the song with a more organic feel, but the label wanted it upbeat.

I too am loving the promotion, both by David himself but especially from his management. As for David’s Capitol 4th inclusion – that is huge in my eyes. Not many bigger celebrations go on in the States than that. Wonder if Jimmy Smitts was instrumental in him being asked?

I SOOO agree with this “One can be uber talented and deserving but in the end, success in the entertainment world is about connections, networking, and reputation. Since reputation is a given, then it is the connections and networking that has to evolve for a broader audience to embrace David’s music over time. That’s happening now and it is a joy to see it unfold.” I would add radio play to this though…

LA Law ftw, by the way!

  32. Kizzi says:

  33. awestruck says:

Kizzi, yes David has the IT factor musically and presence wise. It’s interesting, I just listened to his debut CD and though liked hearing the purity of his voice am really looking forward to this upcoming CD because of the depth to which his voice has developed… and then the live versions!

I agree with what you said in capturing the long-term attention, and it doesn’t hurt either that his open, honest, earnestness doesn’t hurt either.

    • Mona says:

Love your thoughts awetsruck! I agree, his vocals are amazing, this song in no way diminishes that; and if he never sang an uptempo song like this critics would still say he is a one trick pony (even those arguments are so ridiculous by now that they are laughable.)Most up temp/pop/techno/dance songs have very surface lyrics where any real connection on a deeper level is not a goal.

“Violet4ever sent us this cover. Who even is Paul Anka?? I had to youtube. I found a song I know. Sort of.”

Hahahahaha. Of course the song they “discovered” was Put Your Head on My Shoulder – how I remember that song!

Old? That would be me. I was around to see Paul’s career pretty much from the start. He, of course, was a genius/prodigy having been a singer/songwriter from his early teens. Here is his website — the intro is interesting when you hear him singing She’s a Lady (the Tom Jones song which Paul wrote); he shouts out “sing it” with the same inflection David uses. Cool! His bio is fascinating — amazing work ethic and prolific songwriting, from his first hit ‘Diana’ to ‘This Is It’ co-written with Michael Jackson last year. At 67, he is still performing: “I perform because I still need to,” he says. “It’s one of those things that’s in your blood.” Sounds like someone else we know.

I asked each of them if they would like to go ahead of me, and what do you know they did!Since the checkout crew at Costco are a well-oiled team, it only took an extra 3 minutes out of my day, and made those customers pretty happy.Pay It Forward!

Loved my mini trip to Vegas for the book signing. David was his usual awesome, good looking self. Doesn’t he look so great in red?

I’m late reporting and I know you have already heard his fabulous Angels. It was the best I have heard yet. Everyone just went quiet when he started to sing. I was taking pics but had to stop. This feeling came over me and I couldn’t do anything but stare. He does this to me every time.

This is a part of what I wrote over on The Voice. Just bringing it over here. It was kind of funny!

My story from the signing: I decided to have David sign one of my books with my internet name, SweetonDA. This was my personal copy that I’ve marked up and underlined. I’m not the only one who’s done that right? Anyway, he looked at the name and started to say it then looked at me kind of funny! I said it was my name on his fansites and wanted him to sign it that way because I’ve never been a fan of anyone and never been on the internet until he came along or something to that affect. He laughed and said, “Oh, okay.” Then I told him it was all his fault that I had an internet name to begin with. I was telling him how it’s so great how many people he’s brought together while he was signing my second book. He said, who’s Jamie? I said that was me and he looked like why do you have two books? Doesn’t everyone have two books? I said, that one was to share with anyone who wanted to read his book but didn’t have a copy. Then I shook his hand and was ushered down the stairs to leave. I’m so glad I didn’t bring the third book that already had his signature from NJ. He would have really looked at me strangely if I had to explain that that book was to be tucked away in my “David Drawer” along with all my other signed pics, VIP treasures etc. No I don’t have ODD! No wonder my family think I have lost it. Tell me I’m not the only one that has David treasures tucked away somewhere. I got the idea that David thought I was crazy too!

TOfan, did you see the picture of David’s shoes from Vegas. I told djafan that we should get a pic of them and we both thought of you. My pic has his feet crossed. I’ll include it but don’t know if it will show up.

my cheeks hurt from smiling after reading your recap, thank you! & picturing David reading out your screen name had me ROTFLing here.

I find it so sweet not only that he’s mystified by how ODD we all are but that he actually spends time trying to understand it. In COS, the part where he tries to explain why people travel so far to see him, and do so numerous times, I found so touching.

Rather than just take for granted (as so many would) that he’s irresistible and awesome (even though he is), his assumption is that he’s just like everybody else and there must be something else going on (which is also true, imo).

And you are most def. not alone with the David Drawer, LOL. Mine’s a box right now … think I need to upgrade to a steamer trunk soon.

and big hugs to you & dja for the shoe shots … my thing for shoes pre-dates David so kinda merges my two “hobbies” bahahaha

  59. awestruck says:

sweetonDA – what a humurous interlude you had with David. I too must confess to a ‘David Drawer’ full of memories and momentos.

TOfan, I agree that David’s ‘I don’t get this ODD, but I want to try to understand it’ dilema, as he described in COS is very touching. It certainly speaks to his appreciation and respect of his fans.

Great read awestruck. It is very inrtiesetng to see the explanation David has taken time to make about the meaning of SBL. That’s happening now and it is a joy to see it unfold.Embe I agree with your take on SBL and its audience. The video planned supposedly has a call for skateboarders in it serious skaters at that which definitely sends a clear message that the song is about youth and young love in my estimation. Since David is developing his voice in prose, he already excels at song , I think we will find out more as the song is released and he expresses his sense of its meaning over time. But I have to agree that SBL isn’t targeting 30 yr old men or even .mumble-mumble-mumble year old woman like me. Do I like the song yes, very much, AND primarily because it’s David’s voice and my hope for his long term career success in music. My wish is for the youth and young adults who buy Pop singles and albums to LOVE the song and RELATE to it en masse. And who knows, maybe that demographic will relate to the more universal meaning of the lyrics. What I especially find gratifying is his identification as a singer/songwriter/author versus just American Idol runner up. It’s going to be a fun summer. Cheers!

    Breaking non-news
Turns out, Matt Clayton was NOT the album shoot photographer 😥 (he was on set but “used in a diff. capacity”).

He sent out a letter to David fan sites (Janey will probs post the whole letter on Snarkies) to explain. What a cool guy.

  61. TOfan says:

Nice interview with DC on Heels cohost (like how they ended with a snippet of SBL):

  62. embe says:

Allrighty then. Tell me what sort of thoughs go through your head when watching this interview, starting from the 0:48 mark. You might wanna rate your thoughts with letters such as G, NC or R. My rating is worryingly R-oriented.

Or am I just weird? (Ok, don’t answer that.)

    • TOfan says:

LOL embe! tbh, my main thought when watching that interview was that D. didn’t seem very relaxed with her, maybe just me tho’ … my 2nd thought was “wow, her lipstick is REALLY red” lol … although I loved the clip of the rehearsal intro … his beaming smile after the Crush downloads mention is priceless!

      • embe says:

Maybe David didn’t seem very chill in her company ’cause her saliva was dripping on his lap.

Anyway, I don’t know what it is about David being all serious, not knowing he was on camera… I really don’t. But I do know that I still have time to watch that interview 27 times before my fiance comes home, so —>

    • pamela08 says:

A peak at non-smiley David is rather rare, and intriguing. I have visited that part of the interview SEVERAL times too.

      Yep, she was …excited.

      • TOfan says:

        ROTFL embe & pamela08 😆

      • awestruck says:

pamela – I’m thinking she was “excited” or somethin’ somethin’! And David, well either he wasn’t very relaxed as TOfan suggested, maybe uncomfortable, or he was just really unsure as to how to handle it or he was feelin’ a bit of attraction himself and uncomfortable with that??? Speculation aside, David’s instincts seemed to be kicking in and he did not feel comfortable looking her in the eye…

  63. djafan says:

    awestruck….great read.

Why does he feel SBL doesn’t reflect the rest of the album? And why has he gone to some length to explain the meaning behind the lyrics? Hmm, points to ponder. What do you think?

I think I have come to the conclusion that he amazes me at every turn. SF always calls him an enigma and I agree with her 100%. With this album art they captured what we see in those eyes when we meet him and leave us wondering what the heck happened?

    Tofan…glad you like the shoes!

  64. djafan says:

    ok…pic didn’t work…let me try this.

    Vegas shoes 2

  65. djafan says:

Well that didn’t work either…hopefully you can fix Tofan…shoe pic for you!

  66. abanana77 says:

OK I am confused about the whole Matt Clayton being there but not actually shooting the cover. I obviously know nothing about photography at all but why would they have a photographer there that wasn’t actually doing the shoot? Anyone out there with a little more insight?

    • awestruck says:

I’m with you abanana – what does ‘used in a different capacity’ mean? at a photo shoot?

    • TOfan says:

Matt says he didn’t shoot the album cover … he didn’t say anything about the single cover … dunno, but that’s sorta what I was thinking. The single cover seems like his style, simple, strong & classic… or he could’ve been there to help David choose the best ones for the album, as an expert “consultant” that he trusts maybe?

  67. awestruck says:

So, embe and TOfan – In that DC on Heels I don’t think I have ever seen David actively avoid eye contact like that before… hmmm??? lol, perhaps I will share my thoughts later;)

    Thanks djafan!

  68. Angelica says:

LOL! I just hurried over here to tell TOfan to check out the shoes sweetonDA took of David’s crossed feet and see she beat me to it. haha.

    awestruck,

“Why does he feel SBL doesn’t reflect the rest of the album? And why has he gone to some length to explain the meaning behind the lyrics? Hmm, points to ponder. What do you think?”

Idk. But I think he is a sly fox. He knows something. Look at that single cover pic. Srly, I’m glad he went to some lengths to explain the meaning behind the lyrics. People try to pin him down to be specific and he always points to the universal, all-encompassing meaning of a song. The way he did with Crush, including all ages and relating the lyrics to all of us.

    • awestruck says:

Angelica, you are right “he always points to the universal, all-encompassing meaning of a song” and perhaps any specifics would be too personal for David to want to share. And truly there can be many meanings to a song – take, for example, Stand By Me, a new meaning on the 4th of July – and he doesn’t want to sway anyone to think of it in only one way…

  69. TOfan says:

    {{{dja & angelica}}}

Thanks so much for the shoe pic! You know me too well! LOL

Yes, you’re right Angelica, he is a sly fox. The fact that he keeps calling the song “radio friendly” tells me he’s savvy enough to know the role & importance of a single (not that I doubted it) … and actually, Crush didn’t reflect the rest of the first CD either. It too stood out as more pure radio-friendly pop than the rest of the songs.

    • Kizzi says:

Interesting observation TOfan. So very on point. I’m not sure “sly” (as in tricky, concealing one’s objective) is the adjective…I’m thinking maybe more savvy to what works. In any event, I can embrace sly or savvy, as all-in-all, it’s fantastic to see this progress and marketing.

      Oh, happy day!

      • Caio says:

Was reading through all the comments here and thoroughly enjoyed them all!
SweetonDA…loved your story about the booksigning, made me smile, laugh and delight in reading it.
TOfan….yes the girls lipstick was very red in that DC interview (not that there is anything wrong with that) but I couldn’t help but think that maybe David just wasn’t used to sitting that close to an interviewer with such red lips! Perhaps it distracted him from looking at her eyes and instead of zooming in on her red lips every time he faced her, he chose to look away most of the time, lol.
Wow…that cover art….what a heavenly photo, my goodness! Now that would make a fabulous album cover. I’m confused on that…is this just the single artwork or is it the album cover too?
They keep referring to it as “the album”. Maybe it’s just my age showing, don’t quite get it.

Did anyone else notice the “censorship” on David’s official site re: his twitter about the peacock. Made me laugh, they cropped off the last 3 letters of peacock! Don’t know what David would think of that, poor dear! ha.

    • embe says:

Yeah, they did censor peac*** 😀 😀

Someone on IDF said “David needs to watch his dirty mouth” and “He’s such a pottymouth – look what fame has done to him” 😀 Oh gosh, I never thought David could say something worth censoring.

      • Kris says:

We’re going to see David Archuleta! lolol and then the border cronsisg guy was like … is than an entertainer? Hahaha and my mom was like Yes. He was on American Idol. Haha and the guy let us go.
